I have Wine installed, but I can not open the file as it is blocked from executing with a window popping up telling me that this file was blocked due to security reasons. I go into the files properties and try to change the permission but that does not help. Is there a way to get around this? Possibly in the terminal as root?

Feb 8, 2010I'm having some really odd problems with Nautilus. The main one is that most of the time, files of various types are not assigned to be opened with the proper app, and I cannot assign an app. I described this problem in another thread: If I right click a .pdf for example, and select "Open With," the first two suggestions (Leafpad and gedit) are wrong. If I choose instead "Open with another program," I get a dialog with two tabs. One is "Recommended Applications" and is blank. The other is "All Applications." If I click "All Applications," instead of getting a list of apps or having the opportunity to choose one from /usr/bin, the entire dialog disappears abruptly. I'd say that's a "crash."

Jun 30, 2011I want to change the application that opens my mp3 files.
At present if I double click an mp3 it opens in the movie viewer for some reason. I know I can use "open with..." to get a file to open in Rythymbox instead, but I have over 800 mp3 files and want to change the default for all of them.

Feb 4, 2016i cannot seem to find a proper way to make Java my default application to open .jar files. I just made a new Debian 8.3 install on my laptop HP Pavilion G6 and the default application for opening .jar files is the Archive Manager. But when i go to "Open with.." section on right-clicking the .jar file, i get no JRE or JDK option to choose. I just installed the openjdk 7. I can manually run them from the bash, but it would be much more convenient if i just double-clicked it. Here is what i get when i run several commands in the bash :

So we need to configure all those every time in a new PC when we add. May 28, 2011I cant make files executable anymore.using chmod or from file properties.. it isn't working.
AS far as I remember, I didn't make any changes in the user settings and my account has the administrator rights. For an un-executable file, say a jpg or a txt, it can be done.but doesn't happen with a .sh, .py or any other xecutable. chmodi-ing shows no error, but the file isn't executable. Through the GUI, when I check the box , its immediately unchecked again.

Oct 14, 2010I just upgraded to 10.10 (everything was working fine in 10.04). I have .jar files that in 10.04 would execute with OpenJDK. Now I get an error message, telling me that it is blocked:
"The file '[path]' is not marked as executable. If this was downloaded or copied from an untrusted source, it may be dangerous to run. For more details, read about the executable bit."
I try to set it as executable like it was before, and it's a no go. My checkmark takes then quickly disappears before my eyes.

Mar 29, 2011I've always been able to run my shell scripts and other executable files using dot slash, ie: ./runfile.shAfter doing a fresh 11.4 install, I cannot run my scripts. Even if I 'source' the file, it won't run. Why?This is an example of the files that will no longer run. Permissions look normal to me, but there is an * at the end of the filename. I think that just means it's executable, but I've never seen it on my systems before.

Mar 26, 2010OS Ubuntu 10.4 Over the past 2 weeks i have been trying to get this "application/x-executable" (netpanzer 0.8.3) file to run. But have had no luck yet. I know in the software centre that you can get "netpanzer 0.8.2". But it is not the latest version.
Also when i was running Mandriva 2010 FREE edition it could run the "application/x-executable".

In order to run these software (Running the software also includes installing the software by running the set-up executable file) I need to install 'wine' on my system and then run the set-up files from within this 'wine'. I therefore wish to install 'wine' on my system in order to run the corresponding Windows set-up files (which are executable files). I am running Linux Mint version 10 on my system.

Nov 10, 2010I checked the 'Run executable text files when they are opened' option in Nautilus preferences. I have noticed that files such as .sh and .bin launch by simply clicking on then (which is great). However I have also noticed that an ordinary .txt and .html file must not be marked as executable in order to launch it in Gedit and Firefox respectively via clicking. Otherwise you must right click and open with every time. What file types need to have execute permissions? What file types never need to have execute permissions?
