OpenSUSE :: Zip A Folder But Not Include It's Parent Directories?

May 11, 2011

I use "zip -r" to zip the following folder:

/root/Desktop/administration/backup

....My only grip is that when you open the zip file, the parent directories are there too.

So within the zip file I have to navigate through "/root/Desktop/administration" just to get to the directory called backup.

Is there a way for me to zip the directory backup, and not include the parent directories? I want to be able to open the zip file and see only the backup directory listed.

Ubuntu :: Inherit Parent Folder Permissions When Copying Files ?

Mar 28, 2011

I do have an Ubuntu Headless server which is running Samba on it. My mp3 file collection resides on that server on is being share.

So far, no problems connecting to that drive and writing from my Windows box on that share. But if I use my main laptop, which runs Ubuntu Lucid and download an mp3 song from Amazon, the moment I move that to the share, I got permissions problems from the Windows machine. This is clearly a permission issue with group and others; the song is being created on the share without read and write permissions to others or the samba group I created.

My question is. How can I make this process simple or automatic, when moving songs to the share? I don't want to go there everytime and run ...

Code:

Which was basically how I reset or fixed the problem.

I've read about umask, but not sure if that applies here or not, because I'm not creating the file but moving it.

General :: Cannot Inherit The Permission From Parent Folder To Child

I have setgid permission on my home directory (/home/XXXX) the permission look like below.

Code:

drwxrws--- 2 toshi jadu 4096 Apr 26 16:54 getset

If I create new directory in this getset folder the permission of getset folder could not inherit.

Code:

#cd getset
#mkdir test2
#ls |grep test2
drwxr-s--- 2 toshi jadu 4096 Apr 26 16:56 test2

As I know the setgid utility allow to inherit the permission from parent directory to child directory.

Programming :: Bash - Recursive Find - Create Parent Folder - Moving File

Dec 5, 2010

I'm starting bash shell script and I'm looping without any solution.

I'm trying to find some files under a folder hierarchy and in case of errors moving these files to a destination folder under the same hierarchy recreating this hierarchy if not exists.

Finding all ._* files under /src and moving them to /dest recreating folder1 or the others which contains ._* files but without moving files which does not correspond to the pattern.

Code:

I tried find command and I'am getting all needed files

Code:

But I don't know how to use the output to get the parent folder of files which are found to

1- create folder with mkdir -p /dest/folder1 or /dest/folder1/folder4

2- move found files from /src/... to /dest/... with rm command

I'm working on a find command as this trying to do all in the same line but ... little lost

Ubuntu :: Removing Parent Dirs From Tar

Jul 30, 2011

I'm trying to use tar which I've used a bit before but have never had to do this so I'm unsure. I'm trying to remove parent dirs from the backup. example;

Code: tar cvpjf /path/to/backup.tar.bz2 /path/to/the/source I want the backup.tar.bz2 to only contain the contents of source. At the moment the contents of the backup.tar.bz2 have the following file structure /path/to/the/source/files. How can I remove the parent dirs from the backup.tar.bz2? Alternatively, How could I just extract the contents of source with out the above folder structure? at the moment when I extract the backup.tar.bz2, I get the full folder structure in the location that I extracted it to.

Ubuntu :: Move Music Files From All Subdirectories To Parent Directory?

Mar 1, 2010

I've found several posts discussing how to do this in with the terminal, but none exactly fit what I am trying to do. And since I'm still very new, I was hoping for some help.

I have a parent directory called "Music." The subdirectories all start with "artist", some go further as in "artist/album/cd1". So right now the structure varies in the following ways code...

How can I move all the files (or the file types that I choose) to the parent directory "music"?

(By the way, for any who are interested, this is so that I can use an external hd with a PS3. ("playstation 3"--for anyone who was in my predicament searching the threads)

Programming :: Communicating From Subshell To Parent Shell

Mar 17, 2010

I am stuck at a issue in shell scripting. I had tried all the possible ways, yet unable to reach a solutions. I am working on a application, which runs on C shell. For this I had created a installation script, which installs my application in the system, it is working fine. Now, the problematic part is that I had set an alias in ".cshrc" file, which invokes my application when any user types it. But for an alias to take effect, I need to re-login into the system, because I have to read ".cshrc" file again, in order to take effect of my alias. However I can use "source ~/.cshrc" file after my installation, so that my aliasing works without logging back again. But Requirement is that, just after installing the application, alias should be available to user, without logging back again and without issuing any extra command.

I had tried one other way is that, I had created a symbolic link in ~/bin directory, which points to my application to be run, but even that require, to issue rehash command in order to modify internal command hash table. So, my overall problem is that changing alias in subshell should be reflected to parent shell, without running any other command (all commands should be run in installation script only). Or, in other way how to rehash parent shell from subshell. The ultimate requirement is that, the command that will run my application, should be available just after executing the installation script, either by aliasing or by rehashing, or by any other means.

Ubuntu Servers :: How To Refuse Accessing Parent Directory In FTP Client Program

Feb 18, 2010

I am runnung ubuntu 9.10 desktop edition as a server. I am using a FTP client program to upload some files(index.html, background.png, etc) and everything is fine with that. And currently all my files are in /home/myname/ folder. What I want is whenever I log in with my ubuntu account in the FTP client program, I can actually see the list or contents of the very root directory.

In other word, I can see every folder like /bin, /boot, /etc, /root, so on in the FTP software and I can download it. I don't want to allow to access the parent(or root) directory. Is there any possible way to set up the sutff?

Ubuntu Networking :: Ltsp Server Subnet - Log Clients To The Parent Domain?

Mar 10, 2011

I have an Edubuntu server with two nics joined to the primary windows domain and I can log on with domain credentials and everything is AOK. I used LikewiseOpen 6 to join the server to the primary domain. So, on my Edubuntu server eth1 is connected to the primary domain and has a static IP. eth2 also has a static IP and is the DHCP for the thin client subnet, connected to a switch. IP forwarding is enabled.

DOMAIN - eth1 - Edubuntu Server - eth2 (SUBNET) - switch - clients

So far, so good: I can log on the thin clients with one of the local accounts specified on the Edubuntu server and with that account I can surf the net and, if I supply domain credentials, browse the primary domain. Problem I have is:

I can't work out how to log on to the primary domain with a Active Directory account directly from a thin client. If I try DOMAINuser to log on, after giving the password, the password screen refreshes and 'domainuser@11.*.21.*'s password' appears under the blank password box. The IP in that message is the IP for the subnet and not the primary domain. I feel like I'm miss-understanding some basic simple step but I just can't figure it out.

General :: Create Link To Executable In Parent Directory

Jun 27, 2011

Create the following directories: parent/child
Navigate to child and create a file named child (this is an executable file in my case, not sure if that makes a difference). I need to create two "link to executable" links in the parent.

I had assumed that this would work:
ln -sf ./child ../child1
ln -sf ./child ../child2

But that creates a "link to folder" (./child) in the parent directory. If I change it to:
ln -sf -t.. ./child child1
ln -sf -t.. ./child child2
I get an error, "ln: '../child': cannot overwrite directory".

If I do it from the parent directory (which I cannot do, this is part of a Makefile recipe):
ln -sf ./child/child ./child1
ln -sf ./child/child ./child2

It works. Note that I cannot alter the names of any directories or files. How do I create the links when the current directory is the child?
