I've got an image file on my Ubuntu desktop from using ddrescue.When I use the foremost tool to extract the files onto an external drive,I am able to extract the files from the image file to the Ubuntu desktop, but there is not enough room on my Ubuntu partition to hold all the files.

View 9 Replies View RelatedI was given a forensic Image which I now know is a DD image of the drive (Vista) and am trying to mount the image or extract the image to another drive. I'm not sure of the extention type or if the image is a partition or the entire drive. I think it is the entire drive.
Is it possible to mount a DD image to a device. If I can't do that I just want to extract the files to run some programs against the drive. Can I view the files under Ubuntu or do I have to remove the drive and stick it into a Vista computer.
I purchased a second drive today and was hoping the command line would be something simple.
Or am I on the wrong track, should I be doing this all in a windows environment. The reason I picked ubuntu was because of the reporting tools.
I am trying to upload some pics on my Facebook account using Firefox. When I click on Facebook's file upload icon, Firefox bring up a 'File Upload' window. I noticed that smaller image file is previewed on the lower right hand corner, while bigger image file is not. Is there anyway I can change this behavior or maybe change what Firefox is using to browse my files?

I have tried using PIL but it does not give me the data I am looking for (mostly just got a bunch of hex code) and I have no idea how to use ImageMagick, the python module is poorly documented and I can't find any examples on the net.The info I need is stuff like camera model, if flash was used, focal length, exposure time, date, etc.. pretty much the same info I get when I look at the "Image" tab on properties in Nautilus on Ubuntu.
What I am doing is writing a script that will iterate through a lot of pictures and put all this metadata into MySQL. I chose python since it is simple and I am familiar with it. But I can't find a good way to get that metadata from within python.
I recently used clonezilla to make a backup image of hdd, before doing factory restore, now the image is of not necessary as I can image the restored computer (Acer Aspire 3620).Is it possible to extract image to blu-ray and make bootable as in live-cd?

I notice this mainly when i'm using xampp. I copy zip up all my files on one computer, load ubuntu on another, extract the files to the web folder (htdocs) and then I get nothing. However, when I manually create the files directly on my computer as opposed to extracting them, they appear.
Is there something I need to do in order to have these files appear? Is there some sort of file system refresh? Or am I being a complete idiot?
I'm trying to learn how to use foremost, a data recovery tool. I thought a nice place to start would be by attempting to recover a file from a test image. The foremost website links to this site which has a FAT Undelete Test #1 challenge. The challenge is to recover files from a 6 MB FAT disk image. I tried running this command. foremost -t all -i /home/<user>/Desktop/6mb.img -o /home/<user>/Desktop/output but all I got was a folder with an audit.txt file in it.

I mistakenly deleted a folder containing many of my movies that I have transcoded from my collection. I have attempted to restore the files using Foremost, and once I got it working, I found that Foremost was able to restore or partially restore many previously deleted videos, but not any of the most recently deleted files. I am not sure how many total videos, but I estimate that I had 15-30 movies in the folder.
Here is what happened: I had two folders and pressed Delete with the wrong folder selected (somewhat Ironically I was in the process of backing the data up). A message box poped up saying something to the effect of "these files cannot be sent to the Trash, would you like to delete them?" I clicked yes. When I checked the Trash, they were of course not there.
The files are located on a dedicated drive (single partition) that has not been mounted since the incident, except for while attempting recovery.
Is it possible that Foremost cannot detect them because they are still intact somewhere? Are they too big for the program to handle? Should I be using another program or method?
This is what I tried to do:>cd ~/Desktop >sudo sh ati-driver-installer-10-1-x86.x86_64.run --extract.After entering my password, this appeared: >sh: Can't open ati-driver-installer-10-1-x86.x86_64.run.What am I doing wrong? It apparently worked in this thread.

View 3 Replies View RelatedI just installed Ubuntu for the second time, first time was like 2 years ago and my pc was an oddball and some stuff was just not supported properly. Anyways.. I've got the latest build of Ubuntu installed, everything is working fine, just one problem.
I have many, many, many files that are archived in multiple .rar's. Like .r01, .r02, etc... I have them all copied over to the harddrive, but cannot extract what is in them. Also, I have some of these .rar's archived in a single .rar because of windows being stupid and not letting me copy them to my external drive as the names of them were too long for windows to handle. Those .rar's will extract a couple of the .r01, etc.. files, but not all of them.

View 2 Replies View RelatedI have installed unrar-free, and I am trying to extract a file from a .rar archive (actually the file is split into several archives).
When I choose one of the .rar files and open it with Archive Manager, there are no errors and the file to be extracted shows in the Archive Manager window. I then choose to extract it, and after that I click on "show files". But when the folder supposedly containing the extracted file opens, the file isn't there.

I am running latest stable version of Ubuntu, as the user that was created during the Ubuntu installation. The files are in my "Downloads" folder, and the Archive Manager window says that the .rar file is read-only.
I formatted a partition on a USB stick in ext2 format for Linux with GParted. I tried to extract a file onto the partition and received a error that said I did not have the permissions to do it.

OK, So I'm trying to make a SFX file that will extract it's files your home folder, But I can't seem to figure out how.
First you have to make an archive,

rar a Zipper.zip txt.txt
Then you have to make the sfx.

rar s Zipper.zip
But they still get extracted wherever the sfx volume is.
I have a 7zip archive and I would like to extract certain files from with it. Is there a way to do this without un-compressing the entire archive? I know these files exist in there because I am using the "7za l" command to view the files contained in the archive.
