Ubuntu :: Stop Update Manager From Always Asking For Password?

Sep 2, 2010

I recently set up an Ubuntu computer for a friend who is new to Ubuntu and who is complaining that very often, Ubuntu's Update Manager pops up and asks for password to install updates. How could we make the Update Manager install updates quietly in the background without interrupting and asking for password? Maybe this should even be set as default in forthcoming versions of Ubuntu!

Ubuntu :: Cannot Stop Update Manager From Booting At Startup

Jul 4, 2010

xubuntu 8.04 on inspiron 8100

Applications>Settings>Settings Manager>Autostarted apps Update notifier is unchecked

There does not seem to be any Preferences in Update Manager to tweak either.

Is there some file I can edit with nano? Or maybe there's a script I can rename to not run it at startup?

Ubuntu :: Stop Update Manager From Installing Unwanted Material?

Jan 26, 2011

In order to keep my system clean, normally if Update Manager wants to update a package I don't want or never use, I use this as a trigger to first go to Synaptic Package Manager and de-install the unwanted package, then refresh Update Manager and continue with the wanted updates.

However when it wants to install something completely new that clearly I don't want or need, how do I tell Update Manager to permanently remove it from the update list?

Ubuntu :: Update Manager Requires Non-Existent Root Password?

Aug 8, 2010

One of my machines running 10.04 recently began requiring the root password in order to carry out privileged operations in update-manager. I found this bug in launchpad. It's similar, but related to 10.10. If I create a root password, then I can use it to carry out privileged operations in update-manager, but I prefer not to add a root password just for this purpose.

Ubuntu Security :: 631/tcp CUPS / Close Port / Stop This Service / Tell Update Manager To Shove Cups?

Feb 27, 2011

Running: Ubuntu 10.10

I'm in a bind and I don't know how to get what I want. Nmap shows ipp running cups on port 631. Great, simple enough I uninstall cups, along with its dependencies. A new portscan reveals that the port is closed SUCCESS, but... Ubuntu Update Manager nags me @ every restart about the "important security" updates. I can't lock the version of cups in Synaptic, because cups is not installed! So you see I'm in a bind. If I have cups installed I have an open port, and if I uninstall cups the update manager nags me. What do I do? I've tried:

- stopping the cups service and issuing the chkconfig cups off command... (doesn't close the port)
- uninstalling cups... (update manager nags)
- fuser -k 631/tcp (great, but @ reboot the port is still open)
Please teach me how to close this port / stop this service / tell update manager to shove cups.....

Ubuntu :: How To Change Password For Password Manager?

Mar 17, 2011

When I login to my laptop, there's a dialog that asks me for a password. When I fill that in, it allows the network manager to access my wifi password and connect to the wifi. How can I change the password that network manager is asking for? It's kinda awkward to ask this question - I am not asking how to change my wifi password, but the password that comes up - Seahorse? I'm not sure what's used on Lubuntu.

Ubuntu Installation :: Update Manager / Software Sources / Synaptic Package Manager Not Working?

Sep 30, 2010

It started with Update Manager constantly recycling and not updating. When it starts it shows 295 files and 308MB waiting to download. When I click on 'Install Updates' it appears to go through the process, and then presents me with the same 'waiting to install' window again - and again, and again - in fact as many times as I care to click the 'Install Updates' button. No error messages appear. The 'Settings' button produces the same apparent process as the 'Install Updates' button, but doesn't present me with any other screen.

I've tried all the solutions I could find on these forums and nothing works. The sudo suggestions for Terminal usually produce error codes. adjusting a line in the 'hosts' file. When I tried this I was presented with the obstacle of not having access to the read-only file, and no matter how much I searched I couldn't find how to gain access . While investigating all these possible solutions, I was directed in turn to the Software Sources and Synaptic Package Manager applications, but when I attempted to start them, 'Starting Administrative Application' appeared briefly on the taskbar - and then disappeared!

Ubuntu :: Update Manager - Package Manager Won't Work

Feb 4, 2010

Ok so I having the same issue as everyone else but it still exists despite the solutions other people are experiencing. Update manager, synaptic, and apt-get are not working no aptitude on here. Update manager says: An unresolvable problem occurred while initializing the package information. report this bug against the 'update-manager' package and include the following error message: 'E:Encountered a section with no Package: header, Eroblem with MergeList /var/lib/apt/lists/us.archive.ubuntu.com_ubuntu_dists_natty_universe_ i18n_Translation-en%5fUS, E:The package lists or status file could not be parsed or opened.' apt-get has errors with headers, finding files, and wrong file types. I have gone to a couple locations and the files exist and the hash is correct, and the file types are correct. I have tried replacing the sources file. I have tried sudo rm -r /var/lib/apt/lists sudo apt-get clean sudo apt-get update with the same problem happening upon updating. In the same exact areas.

Ubuntu :: Can't Find Application Manager To Stop ?

I'm in a dual boot with xp. Something tells me I should have bought that USR modem with the native Linux driver rather than the cheaper Aopen unit

I will be upgrading to Lucid in the coming weeks but would like to resolve this beforehand if possible.
