i wanted it to open a terminal with root access but i cant see mto get it to open and prompt for a password gksu gnome-terminal -x sh /path/to/script.sh
want to run VirtualBox with root permissions. Trouble is that only when run as root i can access attached USB devices inside of a virtual machine, otherwise, these a greyed out).Now running VirtualBox as a root user also changes the configuration folders, making all my virtual machines already defined disappear. I also don't want to copy all to the root configuration folders. Is there a way to give the VirtualBox root permissions but without actually running the application as a root user. Is it possible to do without changing the permissions of the non-root user, i.e. i don't want my user to have all root permissions, due to security considerations.

I googled several combinations of Mandriva Linux how-to suid disabled setUID etc... so far all I found was "many distributions are disabling suid for security reasons" nothing specific.
I know there has to be a way to log in as root through the GUI. I reverted back to the old GDM to get this problem fixed but it took out packages that I needed and the problems started which required me to reload Squeeze via the 8 DVDs. I don't want any posts talking about the dangers of logging in as root as I know what the consequences are. I don't want to play in the terminal mode either. I created an Admin passwd during installation. how to link the Root name to the Password during log in.

View 6 Replies View RelatedI was using the latest stable release of Debian, dual-booted alongside Windows Vista, with the GNOME desktop, installed via netinst, trying to build and install a library that I knew and trusted, when suddenly I couldn't open the Root Terminal. I clicked the link (in Applications->Accessories (I think, whatever the top one is)->Root Terminal), and in the taskbar I saw an item that said "Starting Root Terminal". A few seconds later, that went away, but the terminal still wasn't open. I tried the regular user terminal, to see the same thing happen. Unsure of what was happening, I tried restarting my computer, since that's always the first step you should take in computer problems.
When I restarted, GNOME wouldn't start. The screen would flash a bit for a few seconds, then a dialog box would appear over a background of static that said "The greeter application is crashing. Attempting another one...".t would then go back to the DOS-style kernel, wait a second, and then the same thing would happen. After several of that, I would get a blue screen which said something to the effect of "It has been detected that the desktop environment has crashed six times in the past 30 seconds.
Waiting two minutes before trying again." When it did that, I tried logging in as root to assess the problem. I gave it the correct password, but it said that it was an incorrect login. After several tries (to ensure I didn't mistype the password), I logged in as myself. Same problem. I tried the su command, with the correct password, and it said it couldn't authorise it.
After a lengthy conversation with a friend of mine who was very good with computers, he basically summarised that he had no clue, but that his best guess would be a virus. Upon running the Linux installer, I found the Repair option. Not being particularly familiar with Linux, I used it simply to backup my important files onto a flash drive. I then tried running the Install option, in an attempt to simply write over my existing Linux and make it new again. The installer, however, consistently froze up when trying to start the partitioner, on the "Checking disks..." stage. I figured it was a problem with my partition. In my naivete, I simply used the Windows tools to clear that partition... It destroyed GRUB too, so I couldn't run any OS. I figured my computer was pretty well screwed, and at that point just decided to bring it into the shop and have them completely wipe it.
my computer was backed up onto an external hard driven I brought it back, I reinstalled Windows. Upon restart, it said that it was still looking for GRUB, which made no sense to me. After messing around with it a bit, I decided to just reinstall Linux too. To my lack of surprise, that fixed the problem. Both OS' now ran just fine. The first thing I did on Debian was to install the Clam Anti-Virus, which I understood to be one of the best Linux anti-viruses. However, within about 10 hours, got the same problem as originally. I wasn't doing any of the same things, and between the lack of consistency in activities and the fact that I had an anti-virus running,figured it wasn't a virus. Not knowing what to do, I just left it and have been using Windows since.
I am running Ubuntu 10.10 on a Toshiba Satellite laptop and need to be able to put a permanent link to my other machine (Windows Vista) on the desktop. At the moment I have to go through the Places - Network - Windows - Network Name - Windows Shares - User rigmarole.

e1000g0 - bond1 - mode =4
e1000g1 - bond1 - mode =4
e1000g2 - bond2 - mode =4
e1000g3 - bond2 - mode =4
I would have presumed that you have 2 x agregates giving 2 x 2gig links and the resilience is that if one nic fails in either bond you carry on with that bond running a 1 gig link until fixed. But, our architect wants to have an active/passive (mode 1) accross bond2 and bond3. I have setup tons of mode 1 bonds and mode 4 bonds but never tried bonding 2 x mode 4 bonds!

I have installed Ubuntu desktop on Ubuntu Server to get Boinc manager running. Now I want to remove Ubuntu-desktop.
Second Problem: /etc/init.d/xorg start : No such file or directory When the server boots i get a blinking cursor.
The link to ubuntu-10.04.1-desktop-i386.iso.torrent is not found on the [URL] ative-download page. The 10.10's are ok.

I am using Lubuntu 10.10 and have installed my application that I need. What I need is a link to the desktop that will execute the program from the /usr/share/test directory. When I execute the program I need to use "Sudo" in order to run in. So my questions is how would I add a symbolic link the desktop with the approipiate permission to run the executable. Also I need to add a custom icon the desktop.

View 5 Replies View RelatedIn maverick, I made a menu shortcut to be able to run nautilus as root (gksu nautilus), when I need to (for example, to clean the /var/apt/archives or anything like that).When I used this in intrepid, karmic or lucid, this worked fine.In maverick, when I do so, I always afterwards have the gnome desktop of root and still the rights of root outside nautilus. I have to logoff and re-login as my user to see my personal background and gnome environment again.

So, I wrote a script to touch a file every 5 minutes, and it will run as root because of the mount command, and I want it to run for every user. I like cleaning up my install with Bleachbit. I see that when you install it, it also install Bleachbit as root. What is the difference between this and the user version and is it safe to use it as root? I am assuming it cleans up stuff on a deeper level but have always wondered about how safe it would be to use.
View 5 Replies View RelatedI have a problem where I'm using Ubuntu linux to mount a Windows Vista machine's USB drive and access it on the web using Apache. I did have the USB drive plugged into the Linux machine directly and that was working via the web. FollowSymLinks is on in httpd.conf

The mount works and I can see the files (see above) from my regular linux user account. If I make a test file in /mnt and soft link to that, I can see it on the web. So it's just the mount to the vista machine that seems to be a problem. It's supposed to be a simple read-only mount and the apache login should (I think) be able to see the same generic root access permissions.

The credentials have a login and password that matches a special read-only account on Vista. I can see the files on the system from Linux, but not via the web. As mentioned above, a different link to the same /mnt area works fine via the web. I've tried several different mount options with no success.

1: 80GB SSD running root with /home mounted to the next disk
2: 250GB HDD where /home lives

I just installed Wine (1.1.3* dev release) and installed Notepad++ (OSS) and Net Meter (Freeware, the latest beta is actually OSS too). I also intend to install a few other things later. The only failure so far is the latest WinSCP So it made me wonder about what running a process/software as "root" actually means. When I use U.S.C or 'apt-get install' to install software on my computer, and type my password, it displays that keyring icon on my systray.
Does this mean I am root at that moment? And how about running wine, the wine processes, and any windows *.exe I'm installing and running? I basically am afraid that I am running all the wine-related stuff as root, even though there is no indication that I at least have elevated privileges. What is/are the worst-case scenario(s) about wine?

Network also includes three other ubuntu VM server's and a Desktop. I'm the only one on the network so my question is, what security risk is there running WireShark as root? Because running it under dumpcap is horrible after you quit. It hogs up all the resource to remove the dump.

I have tried using symlinks, but they become dead when I move the directory they point to. I have tried hard links, but I haven't found any Linux file system that would support hard linked directories. How can I achieve that a complex structure of directories (currently with symlinks for directories and hard links for files) keep symlinks live when directories are moved?
- is there any utility that updates symlinks when a directory is moved?
- is there any Linux filesystem that supports hard linked directories?
- is there any good Linux interface to the new NTFS (the only file system I know to support automatically updating directory links, called directory junctions)?
