Every 32 boot ups, the fsck runs automaticall on my drives.Iould like it to run at shutdown and was looking for a solution.I saw an app call autofsck but not find it in synaptic.Can someone help me find a solution to this. I am running a laptop with 9.10 and a desktop with 8.10.
View 3 RepliesI want to be able to run fsck at, or near, shutdown at the end of the day, and not have to wait for it when booting (important now that I have 1TB drives!). As far as I can tell, the only way to arrange to run fsck on the root partition is if it is unmounted and I believe that only occurs at reboot time.
So, I thought of using the /forcefsck file that, when exists, will force file system check upon the next boot. So I envision having a script that touches that file, or issues the right shutdown command, then lets the system reboot and thus forcing a fsck of the root partition. However, I then want the system to turn right around and then shutdown, so that when I cold boot the system in the morning, I won't see the fsck run at that time, ever.
So I think this boils down to being able to run a one-time init script or something like that. Is there an established way or idiom for running an init script only one time? I know I can create a non-standard init-script that looks for a special file like is done for /forcefsck, and only shutdown if that file is seen, but surely someone else has already come up with a canned solution/init-script to what I want to do.
I have a file server that has a raid array with a jfs file system attached. Whenever there is a power cut (quite frequently in our house), and the server is not shutdown cleanly, then the raid array is not automatically mounted since ubuntu doesn't know if the journal is clean. I have to then manually run fsck and remount the partition by hand which is a bit annoying. Basically, does anybody know if fsck can be setto run if a non-clean shutdown has been detected, or failing that, on every boot?

When I check /var/log/ there are no files there with fsck output

View 5 Replies View RelatedI have installed a cluster computer with 10 nodes . The manufacturer is HP . All nodes and the master node have redhat enterprise linux installed in them . When I shutdown the nodes from the master terminal using "shutdown -h now" they get shutdown . But they dont get completely turned off . This issue bothers me when the power supply is given , all nodes boot up simultaneously generating a huge heat .
Thing to note : When we shutdown our PC they get completely turned off . When the power supply is given , a press on the Power On button is required to boot the system. But , why does it not happpen in the case of cluster? Is there any other way of completely turning off the nodes from the master terminal ?

I cant shutdown without running sudo shutdown. When I try to use the default gnome shut down it takes me back to the logon screen. Fresh install today and I've had the same problem on other installs.
View 9 Replies View RelatedUbuntu will randomly pop up the shutdown menu and then shutdown.It seems to happen when im in firefox and typing and it has been difficult to replicate. I dont think it is a temp issue since watch sensors shows temmp of 40-50C. Someimtes it happens every minute someimtes i can go 10min without it happening.

I have included Shutdown/Startup in dbora, so that Oracle 10gR2 Shutdown/Startup will be automated during OS Shutdown/Startup.
I want to check Shutdown log because Oracle Shutdown was not running, as from $ORACLE_HOME/shutdown.log contains no entries, where as startup log contains latest startup details.
That means here 2 issues are there. One, I want to locate OS Shutdown Log and the other being Why Oracle Shutdown not getting executed.

View 5 Replies View RelatedI booted up my laptop and the boot sequence got stuck at the boot splash screen (plymouth). I did an esc and I saw a failure message, the error I remember in my panic mode is: fsck terminated with status 8
I rebooted, got the same message. Rebooted again and this time, to my relief, it worked.
1) What happened, should I be concerned? Not sure why it worked after 2 reboots.
2) Is there a possibility this could happen again?
3) Are there any boot log files I could look at?
4) Is there anything I can do to fix this? Or a check of some sort?
I'm using Ubuntu 10.04 on a Dell Studio 1535 laptop. No dual boot. The disk is partitioned and I've got my /home folder on the other partition for situations like this.
i have a ubuntu 10 server (as server LAMP) , i was trying to repair a couple of unix files with fsck command on directory, thinking it would apply only that directory, but it affected all system, in th end it says: "file system has changes, restart ubuntu", then services go down, after some directories fail, restart funtion do anything... i switched on again, but at start show error.

can I force the fsck to more indepth checks such as doing directory optimisations, bad blocks checks, etc. maybe by passing parameters to the fsck call during startup?

I need to boot in WXP just because the guys at the company don't want to update for Linux drivers in the TS so I can't connect from home unless I do it in Windows XP. But today WXP refuses to boot, when the progress bar appears, the system boots automatically. The WXP CD doesn't help, the repair console doesn't let me run chkdsk or anything (dir C: gives an error about listing addresses or something like that). Is there any way to use fsck or anything in Linux to repair the WXP NTFS partition?

I've been through [URL].. which is VERY close to my problem but I cannot get Disk Utility to work when running off my Live USB. Asking it to check the hard drive results in it telling me the filesystem is 'not clean'.

View 2 Replies View RelatedI did a live upgrade from 11.3 KDE and observe a following issue.When I press the shutdown button on the laptop it initiates the shutdown and shuts down fine but after a significant delay of time (something like 30 seconds). When I click the shutdown button in KDE it initiates the shutdown instantly. This was not the case in 11.3 where the shutdown worked the same regardless of the method that triggered it

When I try "shutdown -c", the system prompts "shutdown: cannot find pid of running shutdown."
My windows partition isn't starting up, gives an error and suggests using chkdsk. However, I cant even reach safe mode or command prompt. I can still access my Windows hard drive through Ubuntu.I am wondering I can use a Linux tool to perform a check on this Windows partition? I found the fsck command, but I am confused about the warning about running it on a mounted system and about what exactly is a mounted system.
Can someone please tell me how exactly I wod go about doing a check on this partition? Its currently located in /media/disk.I can right click on the partition and unmount it. But if I do this, will Ubuntu still be able to see this partition?What command do I use to do fsck only on this Windows partition (and not the whole system and other mounted places)? How do I remount the Windows partition so that I can atleast salvage my data easily in case doing a disk check does not help?
Right now I am trying to fix the problems on my server with daemons not starting.
So I have to try different solutions and reboot.
The problem is that after 28 reboots, fsck kicks in and decides to check 2 TB of data.
Is there a way to cancel this???
It takes forever, and by the time it will be done, I will have forgotten what I was testing.
The issue of daemons not starting becomes even more frustrating when fsck decides that I must take a half an hour break.
So again, how do I cancel the fsck on Ubuntu Server?
