Ubuntu :: Removing Wine Programs ?
Feb 11, 2011Im having a little problem removing wine programs.
Firstly i tried going into the wine menu and selecting uninstall under the programs tab in the menu, it said it was successfully uninstalled but if failed to remove anything.
Then i tried "uninstall wine software" under the wine tab and that still didn't change anything.
Finally i tried removing wine itself with "sudo apt-get remove wine" again it said wine was successfully removed, and again nothing changed wine and all its programs are still here.
Ubuntu :: Removing Wine Associations In Nautilus?
Dec 28, 2010I just removed wine, I want it completely removed from my system. I installed it and removed it using the Software Center. However I still have associated options in the Nautilus context menu. For example when I right click any text file I have "Open With notepad" as an option. It's easy enough to right click that file, go to the open with tab, and remove notepad from the list of options. However it's apparently associated with certain types of files because the option was there for bash scripts I'd written with no extension, files with the .txt extension, etc. So this is apparently some file associations that wine installed and didn't take out. I've searched the xml files in /usr/share/nautilus/ui and none of those contained the word "notepad" so I'm guessing that's not where I need to be focusing my attention. I've done some googling and nobody seems have a definitive answer that I can find. Also, I found a "how to uninstall" on Wine's website where it basically just had me remove $HOME/.wine and some gnome association settings, and I did that and have even rebooted and that option was still there. I've removed it for those two types of files, but I want to know where it's stored so I can get rid of all traces.

May 10, 2010I Installed wine and starcraft recently, which I have been able to run before but It didn't like my new computer. Whatever, Starcraft 2 comes out soon and I have played my fair share of broodwar, so i decided to uninstall it. I removedarcraft from wine and then wine itself, however my Gnome-Do still has the shortcut/iconor starcraft when I type it in. Im guessing i need to go into gconfig-editor to fix it, but Im not brave enough to venture in without any advice before hand.

Jan 29, 2011I attempted to install Adobe Photoshop Elements 9 under Wine and it failed. Then I read a thread that offered some tweaks. But now when I try to install all that it offers to do is UNinstall. I thought I could UNinstall and then reinstall, but no...It fails to UNinstall too...just as it failed to install. So I'm wondering how to remove this (the command line way) from the system. I tried "yum remove wine" and when I put wine back, like a phantom, the same problem was there. I tried removing the entire .wine directory in my home folder...same problem.

Ubuntu Installation :: Removing Evolution From Synaptic Vs Just Removing The Applet
Feb 27, 2011what i did was, remove evolution mail from synaptic, what i wanted to do was just remove the indicator applet from the task bar. i read a bunch of bad stuff about removing evolution from synaptic vs just removing the applet.
im worried. did i break anything or put my security at risk. after, i used a command (older) (sudo apt-get install ubuntu-desktop)to install ubuntu desktop. because i thought that it would fix evolution. then i went to synaptic and installed a package called evolution. i rechecked evolution in applications menu. however, i notice that i have both a checkable evolution and two evolution icons. nothing 'seems' broken. im not sure if it ever was. and evolution calender pops up as normal, as does the the installed plain evolution. they both seems to be an exact copy of the other.
all i really wanted to do was remove the indicator applet. did i make a serious mistake. since ive had ubuntu, ive reformatted a lot because i was worried i made a mistake of some kind. however now im into the more "make a mistake and fix it stage' as im pretty happy with my current desktop and have worked hard to customize it. the command, sudo apt-get remove indicator-messages removed the mail icon. i still am worried that i broke something, or put my security at risk. also, now i have two mail icons. evolution mail and calendar, and another just called evolution.

May 31, 2011I know a bunch of commands and I am comfortable using the terminal, I even set a powerpc server but I can't figure out how to remove epiphany on this new computer I'm setting up. I didn't install anything with tasksel. I installed gnome and xorg afterwards... I load it up and 'startx' just fine. then I check around for the programs that were installed. I lik'em gimp, lot's of utilities. gedit. anyway I find epiphany, which I have already established that I dislike, I immediately go to the root terminal (another nice program that comes with gnome) and type apt-get remove epiphany-browser-data the output says it will be deleting gnome... however I have researched and found these are simpy meta packages that don't really matter.... however under the section that states all the packages that will be removed by autoremove there is a huge list... I doubt these packages are safe to remove. how to remove epiphany without removing a huge amount of probably needed software

I've been unable to turn off the notifications that appear in the top right corner, despite a decent amount of searching on google. Feb 16, 2011while trying to get a game to work on wine I was surprised to find out that the wine version that ships with sid is 1.0.1 released in October 2005. So I installed the latest release I found at [URL] like this :

The install failed, I think because I hadn't remove the old wine version, and that's when the joy-ride started. Impossible to remove wine to restart properly. (apt-get remove libwine wine and apt-get -f install didn't) After some googling I tried this :
dpkg -i --force-depends wine_1.1.42~winehq1-1_amd64.deb
This did install the wine version I wanted, and the game ran fine after that. However the result was a borked apt-get. Tried to remove wine again with the above commands, resulting in apt-get failing to do so because it tried installing wine-unstable and reported errors similar to these : E: Could not perform immediate configuration on 'wine-unstable'. see man 5 apt.conf under APT::Immediate-Configure for details. I've followed alien bobs instructions for a multilib environment from here:[url]
And then used sbopkg to download and compile wine version 1.2.2, which went through just fine.
After that I grabbed cabextract from sbopkg and ran this: wget [url] sh winetricks d3dx9 To get the DX9.
But, when I try to run the game, this is the error I get:

The game it self ran perfectly on the 32 bit version of Slackware, tested with 13.0. So now I think I'm missing some libs or something, but I have no clue which.

Oct 19, 2009I don't know if it's just my system, but after applying the latest Wine update, the mouse cursor in Wine windows is now purple/magenta/pink, whatever. Not a big problem, just annoying. I've looked through the various config files in ~home and /usr/share/wine, and can't find any parameter that might even remotely address this.

Nov 19, 2010I am new to fedora and installed wine to see if I could get the sony reader software working (required to access sony bookstore from my sony ereader). Well the program did not work though it did create icons on my desktop. wine kept crashing and I said lets just get rid of it. I uninstalled wine via yum remove and nothing appeared to happen so I did rpm -qa |grep wine and saw lots of stuff. So I simply did yum remove wine* and then a rpm -qa |grep wine was empty. however wine is still under applications on my desktop and still has a category for programs--reader. I should also mention that while wine was installed I attempted to remove the reader via the wine uninstalller but a) wine gave a message of a core crash and b) all the uninstaller did was give me the option to reinstall the reader program. so now when I attempt to open an epub it tries with the sony reader software. I know I can just right click to use another program but for now I want wine gone completely from my pc and the sony program gone.

I installed 3.10.9 as per the Launchpad website - it looks like Ubuntu is not 'seeing' hplip although it is installed and working. I guess I need a more subtle command to get rid of all the hp driver files. Or could I just install 3.11.1 over the top? (Would have thought best to remove 3.10.9 first).

Jan 13, 2010I had installed Ubuntu Studio to check it out alongside my normal KDE system, and have decided to remove it. Problem is, having installed GNOME, I also got programs and libraries I no longer want or need alongside my existing KDE ones (ex. File Roller and Ark, I don't really need both, so I removed FR; I've removed other such programs I know about, as well). But I don't know all the programs or libraries that are still on here; in my package manager with a filter set for only installed programs I see a lot when I search 'gnome', but I'm wary of uninstalling things when I don't know what they do or if they're being used (I do have GNOME applications; I prefer Pidgin so I chose that over Kopete, for instance).
I ran apt-get uninstall ubuntustudio-desktop but despite the install process taking about 20 minutes it removed it in about 20 seconds...and seeing all these programs weren't removed along with it, I can see why. Is there a way I can remove all these things? They're taking up room and I'm not using them. I already did apt-get autoremove, as well. Anything else I can do to find and remove these programs besides reading through every single entry in my package manager's list of installed programs?
