View 2 RepliesI have configured my Cisco ASa Firewall to send its logs to my ubuntu server in /var/log/cisco/ I see the logfiles populating in real time, but i can also see all the logs are also wtitten to /var/log/messages. How can i make sure i do not have a log redundancy? I dont want my firewall logs displayed in messages since there are now sent to /var/log/cisco.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI need to remove a large binary file(PDF file) from a large log file which is generated daily.This is seriously hogging space on our servers.I need to remove the large PDF from the logs to make the logs smaller and manageable
I need to take out the texts (or binary file) between the strings
<my:PDF> and </my:PDF>
<applicationForm> and </applicationForm>
<image> and </image>
<extractedSignature> and </extractedSignature>
I am not sure whether sed utility can do this, these are large files and need to be pruned .I am not seeking logrotation advice just a script or command that can strip these large logs of texts between the characters above . I am not sure how to do this.These files are rather large.I am not sure how to achieve this with sed , tail, head , tr or any other facility .

I have recently downloaded the XChat IRC program, and I want to add a network, server and channel. However, I'm not entirely sure which goes where. I have made numerous attempts but all have shown the message that it could not be connected to and that I should make sure I spelled it correctly (which I have). If anyone could help me find the proper fields to put the information into, I would be very grateful. Here is all the information I can find on the matter:
Server: irc.esper.net
Room: #tigIRC
URL: irc://irc.esper.net/tigIRC
I'm using Ubuntu 11.04, Natty Narwhal, 64-bit. I've been using it since Alpha, and Firefox and xChat have always frozen my system. I update daily, so I know I'm on the newest updates, yet they still freeze my system. I've tried doing a total uninstall on both of them and reinstalled to the same freezes.
View 3 Replies View RelatedAnyone else getting this? It's very strange that it can play .wav files but not .ogg.
This is a clean install of 11.2 64bit as of yesterday, all other sound works well.
When it tries to play a .ogg it sounds like raw data is being catted to /dev/audio or something.
I've never used irc and I decided I'd just like to learn how it works. I've got Xchat installed, I can easily find networks and channels with users in it, but then I can never see any messages. I see the initial channel messages when I join, but even in channels with hundreds of people I don't see any other messages come up.

I'm trying to use Xchat, to communicate with a server which uses CAcert root certificate(s) for its SSL connection. I have Xchat all configured, and it works fine when I connect without SSL, but I'm getting pretty miffed about how to get it to find/use whatever local certificates I'm supposed to have, assuming I actually *have* these certs installed somewhere. This seems like it should be less difficult than I'm making it out to be. I've been to CAcert's website and their Wiki, and while they have the root certificates available for download (which I did, as well as inadvertently installing them into my browser, where they probably already were anyway) the only instructions I saw in their "Linux" docs department, on how/where to use/put them, were for a couple RH based distros, and some other distro I'm not using.
I checked the Xchat website and had a somewhat semi-thorough look around their user forum, but didn't find what I need there either. The openssl man page (yes, it's installed) doesn't tell me what I want, and xchat doesn't even *have* a man page. An LQ search turns up a few off-topic threads, mainly several years old and with very little in the way of replies. This ought to be easy :/ and I bet it is easy, with the right documentation in front of me. This is Slackware 13-64/-current. I've got /etc/ssl/certs folder, with nothing in it; and I have an /etc/ssl/openssl.cnf file which *appears* to be intended for using SSL on my own server (don't want that).
In case it helps, here's what the server tells me when I have enabled SSL and try to connect:
Code:
[15:47] * * Certification info:
[15:47] * Subject:
[15:47] * CN=irc.twice-irc.de
[15:47] * Issuer:
[15:47] * O=CAcert Inc.
[15:47] * OU=http:
[15:47] *
[15:47] * www.CAcert.org
[15:47] * CN=CAcert Class 3 Root
[15:47] * Public key algorithm: rsaEncryption (4096 bits)
[15:47] * Sign algorithm sha1WithRSAEncryption
[15:47] * Valid since Jun 13 14:38:18 2008 GMT to Jun 13 14:38:18 2010 GMT
[15:47] * * Cipher info:
[15:47] * Version: TLSv1/SSLv3, cipher AES256-SHA (256 bits)
[15:47] * Connection failed. Error: unable to get local issuer certificate.? (20)
Can someone point me to a decent link/tutorial about how to connect by IRC, (using Xchat if that matters), and have it find my SSL certs and/or where/how I get the CA root certificates in the right location for this to work?
I am trying to configure irssi to work correctly after having used XChat for quite some time. When I try to join #fedora on Freenode, however, I am unable to identify my username (which worked fine in XChat). Subsequently, I automatically join #fedora-unregistered (see http://pastebin.com/XUcx7CLe). I have edited the contents of the ~/.irssi/config file using /COMMAND in the irssi client (see http://pastebin.com/zV7NZYKG). I think these are the most relevant parts of the configuration file where the problem must lie.
Code:
{
address = "irc.freenode.net";
chatnet = "Freenode";
port = "6667";
use_ssl = "no";
ssl_verify = "no";
autoconnect = "yes";

When I try to login as me - it gets pretty far but then something happens and automatically logs out. This happens in Gnome, Kde too. Now - I have no problem logging in a Root. Is there a way I can try to stop the login process before it kicks me out, or is there a way to look at some files to tell me what's going on?
View 3 Replies View RelatedOn our app server the logs from the Sybase Mobilink service get logged to /var/log because of that I did a chmod a+rx /var/log and all is well until.... the next day QA logs in goes to check the logs and gets:
Quote:
qa@dwdb [~]$ ls /var/log
ls: /var/log: Permission denied
qa@dwdb [~]$
I notice this in all my machines (32bits and 64bits).

View 4 Replies View Related1) THE SETUP: I have a home set-up with 3 Ubuntu computers, including an HTPC which is always on, plugged into a Verizon FIOS routerI also have a web based cam (TrendNet TV IP422W).The cam has an ethernet jack so it plugs in directly to the router.It has a simple firmware that allows users to log in via HTTP.It is also managed via HTTP.
2)THE PROBLEM: the cam does not keep logs.So I never know who is logged in at any one point. It's not a big deal, but it is annoying.I want to fix that.The router does not keep logs either.I was told I can get a linux based router to replace (or plug in) to the default FIOS router, but I am looking for something simpler and cheaper.
3)THE FAILED SOLUTION: my idea was to set up the Ubuntu HTPC to always forward a given port to the webcam via the LAN. I tried to follow the instruction from URL...as best I could, see below. 6666 is the port that the cam is listening to (the router is set to forward that port to the cam's LAN IP 192.168.1.30). 5555 is the port that I am trying to forward through the HTPC (ubuntu.local or 192.168.1.130 below, and the router is set to forward any 5555 TCP packets to the HTPC at 192.168.1.130).The iptables commands below where run on the HTPC.
My laptop Dell Inspiron 1420 running Ubuntu 10.10 has started logging itself out every 30-60 minutes or so. I am trying to figure out what is the problem. I am wondering if it is
1) a hardware problem. I have recently replaced the cooling fan which required disassembling the whole thing into small pieces. The computer has worked without a problem for one day after the repair.
or
2) a problem with a recent update. The computer started logging itself out after a recent update. This coincidence is suspicious, but I hasn't noticed anyone reporting a similar problem with Ubuntu 10.10.
Is there a way I can see what is happening through the system log? What would be the keyword I should look for in the log files?
Can I track the last updates I have applied and roll them back?
The only solution I see now is to reassemble the laptop to see if it helps.
I have installed Ubuntu 11.04 over the weekend and wanted to tail the logs whilst doing so stuff. When I browsed to the folder after getting an error trying to tail, I noticed that the messages file does not exist.
Usually use tail -f /var/log/messages
Anyone else seeing this? I do 'safely remove' to remove USB flash drive. disappears. Five seconds (or less) later, it reappears. The second time I do 'safely remove', it stays gone.

Where do I find the programm logs, where I can investigate my problem?
I cannot find one single UFW event anywhere. I have researched this and see that others have trouble finding these logs too. I have looked in every /var/log there is and I can't find one event. I have UFW enabled, default deny and logging set to medium from a previous logging low(in hopes this would create more events to be seen). In terminal, UFW is shown as active. I have been using Ubuntu for more than a year now and I recall seeing UFW events with every session in some /var/logs in Ubuntu 9.04 - I'm running 9.10 now. I have also tried looking throughout the system files and have found nothing. Is UFW not working properly or could I just not be experiencing any firewall events(not likely)?

View 1 Replies View RelatedI don't know if this a bug or some setting that I have changed inadvertently, but when I start up my computer Ubuntu now logs me on automatically to the sole user account I have created but without asking me my password.I rarely fiddle about with settings and am not aware of touching anything to do with user accounts etc. Obviously I don't want this behaviour otherwise I wouldn't have put a password on the account. Everytime I log on I want to choose what language I want to run my system from the log on screen.
In administration > users and groups > it says my user account password is asked at login.Is there an option somewhere else to turn this behaviour on or off?how I could have accidentally turned this behaviour on?
Is there anyway to view the Boot Log of the messages displayed during the booting of Ubuntu? I found log file viewer under Administration but there were so many logs I did not know if any of them were the Boot up logs. View 2 Replies View Relatedwhenever i use flash, e.g streaming a video on videos, the computer logs off (although it also closes all the windows so may be actually restarts).
when i log back on the sound also doesn't work, i have to reboot for it to come back on.
i'm sure this is to do with the flash-plugin and not the browser as i have tried many different browsers with the same result.
I just (regrettably) did a clean install of 10.04nbr on a Dell Mini 10. I got to wifi and gma500 crap all worked out (almost), but now when I close the lid, and reopen it, I'm greeted with a black screen. I know it's still running, because I can hear the little drum sound of the login screen loading- it's just not displayed to the screen. ctrl-alt-f8 brings it back, but just the login screen. After logging in - I can see that all my apps have been closed. It's like it brings up the wrong tty (sorry if I'm using the wrong wording). I don't know if it's relevant, but I have it set to log in automatically. This is a bit frustrating- I've done some googling and haven't found any relevant information.
