Ubuntu :: Ralink3090 Wireless - Very Low Quality Of Wifi - Works Only In 2meter Range
Sep 1, 2011
Problem is the very low quality of wifi (works only in 2meter range)
I have ra3090 hardware.
Code:
I've compiled and installed the official driver from ralink with wpa2 support, installed it, blacklisted rt2800sta
Now 2860 loads signal quality was 33/70 (with rt2800) now it's 99/100 but keep showing the password dialog after each attempt to connect (means it doesn't connect) password is WPA2, and can not be changed to WEP or something.

I am super new to linux. I have tried a lot of distros but went with OpenSUSE11.3. I have both gnome and kde live cd. Now to the problem, When I put in the live cd and boot - the computer finds the wireless card and lets me connect to the internet. This works on both versions. But after clicking on the install icon the wireless no longer starts and then I cant get it to work. Maybe its something I should be doing. After all I am new to this.

I don't why this is but we have WiFi working on our computer. The only problem is that when I search for LinkSys folder or Cisco folder nothing shows up. Is there something I need to do for that? I have tried to search for it in the folders themselves by doing a search but nothing comes up.

I have a Gateway ML6721 laptop that uses a Realtek RTL8187B for wireless comms. I am very new to Ubuntu and Linux. I am trying out linux using a usb stick, 16Gb with a 4Gb persistence. If I stay in the same room as the router there is no problem. If I walk too far, I get disconnected. Works fine in windows throughout the whole house. Is there a setting I can change or do I need to use a different driver?

I have an ADSL router, wireless, at my home. However, the wifi range is extremely limited. I want to be able to have the wifi all over the house, or atleast about 20 feet away from till where it reaches till now (father and grandfather under the same roof can be a problem.)
So how do i get to it? can I get another router and have it connect to the present router? The present one is one with ethernet and wifi outputs, limited to 4 connections i think, and i have it configured to dial to the net automatically, i.e.: no dsl dial up from pc reqd.

Does anyone know how to stop ubuntu (when loading) looking for wifi signal's in the 5000000 khz range? I have a problem with other devices around my house that operate on this range of frequencies and it effects ubuntu while its booting, to the extent that it wont load. My wireless router is on the 2000000 khz range therefore I only really need Ubuntu to look for devices on this range of frequencies. If anyone know a way to prevent Ubuntu looking on the 5000000 khz range by editing something I would be very greatful to know how to do this.
As at the moment I am having to boot about 5 times until it eventually decided to load. Sometimes the only way I can get in, is by going into recovery mode, dropping to terminal and typing in: "sudo gdm" and eventually I get it. Which is a right pain. Please see my previous post outlining my problem: [URL]

With most Linux distributions, I can only get a short range to connect my laptop to the wifi. However, when using Ubuntu 10.10, this issue seemed to cure itself and I was able to use wifi in my room. I recently installed Ubuntu 11.04, but suddenly my wifi issues have come back again - I can only connect if I am near my router.
I am using an Intel Wifi 5100. I should also note I can get a wifi connection if I boot into Windows 7.

I have only had a few weeks worth of experience with linux, so I'm probably considered a newbie at this but I felt like giving it a shot. I just configured my new Toshiba Satellite A505-S6969 to jaunty. Most of the transition is going well but I'm stuck with a few issues, one of which is getting my wifi to work. Right now I'm working off of an ethernet cable.spci returns

I installed openSuSE 11.2 sometime ago in a COMPAQ Presario CQ60-419WM laptop (the ones that Wal-mart sold for $300 about a year-and-a-half ago. I installed the 64-bit version because I saw that the processor could support that (perhaps that was not a good idea). I have some problems that seem related to not having the necessary drivers. My wireless has never worked and my display is far from what I would like it to be (the response is slow, if a drag a window, its motion is jerky, if I scroll down in a browser window, the motion is wavy). The look and feel is very different from what I get at work and I do not know how to fix it.

When in XUBUNTU i click the picture of the 2 pcs indicating a network and choose "connect to hidden wireless network", put in the information. All this works nicely. When i reboot it's saved my config so i choose it to connect again but the "connect" button is disabled so i have to config it all over again and then it works. How do i get it to just connect to the network on login?

After upgrading to Ubuntu 10.10, I've had difficulties with my wireless connection. It will work for a few hours just fine, then suddenly disconnect and try to ask for my password several times before giving up. It's not the network--another computer on a different OS is having no such problems. Also, my wired ethernet connection works with absolutely no problem.

Im using Ubuntu netbook remix on my wife's hp mini. Ever since I switched my router out this netbook will connect to my wireless network, then show a disconnected icon, yet the internet still seems to work. I've searched around and seen that other people have had this issue but I haven't seen anything on how to resolve it.

just joined the forum so I am a little lost. I am trying to get my wifi to work on an HP Pavilion tx 1115nr (tx1000 series). I am using Ubuntu 10.04 desktop, my network card is BCM4311 rev1.I have read many threads and tried about everything, but I am so close. I can load bcmwl-kernel-source from the software center, restart and my wifi works for that startup. If I restart my computer again, it no longer works. I can then remove bcmwl-kernel-source and reinstall it and it works just once again.I have blacklisted b43 and ssblsmod reveals that these modules are missing after restart when wifi doesn't work:

My only unhappiness with 11.04, after I installed in on 4/28 on my Eee PC 1000H (dual booting with Windows XP), is that the range of wireless reception in my house, from exactly the same spot as before, has worsened considerably. No problem when running Windows (which I'd rather not do, of course). Could the upgrade have installed a new driver for the wireless hardware that isn't as good as the previous one?

I downloaded Ubuntu 10.04 yesterday and installed using Wubi. I have downloaded ndiswrapper and ndisgtk and installed the drivers for my wireless adapter. My last question is how to make Ubuntu actually search for a wireless network in range like Windows does. So far, I like Ubuntu but want to connect to the 'net.

I thought I would drop a few findings relating to a strange problem I don't have the answer to.
I have installed both Ubuntu and now OpenSuse (alongside Windows XP) on a thinkpad T40. I own a linksys WRT54G2 wireless router.
Windows XP runs fine, and connection to the wireless network is fine everywhere in the house.
however the first time on Ubuntu and now on Opensuse 11.2, the laptop needs to be within 3 feet of the router in order to connect to the wireless network!
Strange thing is that the laptop can see the network from anywhere in the house (with a signal strength carying between 60 and 90%) - however impossible to connect.
Suse is running the ath5k driver for the internal network card.

I am running 64-bit 9.10 on a Acer Aspire 1810T. I can connect to the internet via both wifi and the Novatel U998 modem. I have a PPTP VPN that works correctly via wifi, but does not work via the modem. The obvious problem would be that the ISP is doing something... but I'm dual booting Windows 7, and the ISP's Windows based software is able to connect to the VPN without issue.
I'm running VMWare player to be able to access my required Windows apps, so I'm almost in a position to dump MS if I can get this VPN issue resolved.

Wifi Works, but No internet When I'm directly connected to the Wifi router, via LAN cable, I have internet (this is how I'm posting now) I have a desktop computer, this is also the same problem. Because of this it hasn't updated to 10.04 yet. Its still at the version previous (9.??). Might be relevant. This problem began when my wife's Mac had an update that killed her Wifi access, and we had to reset the Wifi Router. She didn't change anything, we just re-inputed all the data as before (passwords, ID). Since then I can't access my internet even if I can connect to the wifi.
Other Observations In the office, my Laptop's ubuntu side has no problems with accessing Internet through the wifi. My Windows side is unaffected (both Desktop and Laptop). One time I can connect, but when that happened on that same day she can't. Possibly a fluke or coincidence. I read the post of a similar matter, where the person's Empathy still works. when I tried check if that was the case with me, after getting my Empathy to work it began to work again. But this hasn't worked in a succeeding attempt. Below is my system information if it may be relevant.

HPG62-144DX notebook, Windows 7 and considering Ubuntu. I installed 10.10 and tried to get my wifi running but that wouldn't work. I had a connection only sometimes and it broke up after 5 minutes. Once I got a webpage but annoyingly slooow. Got the advice to update drivers and stuff. But the wifi connection is the only one I have...
Went back to 10.4 32-bit. Booted from CD and will keep it that way until this is sorted out. Now I see my wifi hotspots directly and I have no problem to establish a connection. The icon shows 3 bars quality. Network Tools says: Wlan1 = Realtek, Transmitted bytes xxx Received bytes yyy, no errors, link speed = 1Mbps, State = active. Looks good!
The only minor thing here is that enabling/disabling my internal Atheros antanna also enables/disables my Alfa USB Wifi adapter (based on Realtek 8187) but who cares. A bigger problem is: when I start Firefox it doesn't come up with a webpage. It just keeps on saying: "loading". At the bottom of the screen it keeps saying "Looking up" for ages. Nothing further.

Wired network works fine in KDE, and my network card

I have installed and un-installed 3 different versions of Ubuntu. My fourth is a re-install of v9.10. During all these installs I have had difficulty getting my wifi to work. During my last install I left the ISO in the drive by mistake so when the system rebooted it loaded from the disc in demo.... This was interesting because in the demo the program manager showed 2 drives for wireless, 1 Broadcom STA and 2 Broadcom b43xx. I tried loading the STA and it worked! (sorry it could have been the b43xx, for the time being it's insignificant) Upon my excitement I restarted the computer and removed the disk went to my Ubuntu set up and ...what the Broadcom choices weren't there Why?
Now I am running Win 7 Home 32bit on my main drive and have Ubuntu loaded on its own drive. I have a Netgear WN311b wireless N card installed. Again my confusion is why it worked in demo (off the cd) but doesn't from full install. I read on the web to try inserting my supplied disc from Netgear and then search program manager. It now showed the two for-mentioned Broadcom programs, but this time wouldn't install them. On the b43 I got an error message and on the STA it searched extracting and loading this continued for a 1/2 hour with no progression. I couldn't close the PM or the extracting and loading box, so I had to restart the computer.

I recently bought a new wireless router (Cisco E1000) to use in my house. The E1000 supports mixed-mode 802.11n/g/b, which is what I have enabled. It is the first 802.11n router I've had. My netbook (an HP/Compaq Mini 110) only supports b/g. When connected to this new router, I can only see my status as root. NetworkManager shows a little red exclamation point, and 'iwconfig' shows nothing. It's missing in the 'iwlist scanning' list. Even still, I'm connected and can do everything just fine. However, everything shows up fine when I run 'sudo iwconfig' or 'sudo iwlist scanning'. These have always worked as a standard user before.
