View 1 RepliesI installed Ubuntu 9.10 (desktop version) and it performs flawlessly. Now I want to add a second hard drive to the same box, install Ubuntu 9.10 *server* on it, and use GRUB to control which one boots.
Problem is, I'm a Windows pro but a Linux n00b. Should I disconnect the first hard drive (the one with Ubuntu desktop) before I do the server installation on the second (new) drive? Also, how do I edit GRUB's menu to offer a choice between the 2 OSes?
I have two hard disks sda and sdb. I have Windows XP installed on sda2 and Ubuntu 10.04 on sdb5. When I installed Windows XP, Ubuntu stopped booting. I tried to repair grub2 from a Live CD unsuccessfully. Now I have completely messed up my MBR of both HDDs. I just want to configure grub2 to load both OSes in dual boot mode.

I have been fooling around with some of the new kernels and have ended up with a lot of options in my grub at boot. I have been checking this page:[URL].. ... and it appears hiding the entries in grub2 is not as easy as hashing them out (#) which was the convention in grub.
My problem: I have installed kernel 2.6.36 and 2.6.37 just to fool around. Neither works in anything but low-graphics as it seems the ATI graphics driver is not working in either yet. They both also kill my wireless (don't recognise the card). BUT I don't want to completely uninstall them as I'd like to keep playing around as time goes on and they develop. I'd like to just hide them from the menu.
Is there some easy way of doing this? The link I provide only gives options to make the kernel non-executable (overly complicated process) or remove the kernel completely, neither of which I want to do. This used to be simple in grub, open a file and add or remove a #, and - although overall I prefer grub2 - IMHO this 'improvement' seems a little like a backward step. Sure a million people will disagree, but .
On my Samsung netbook, I have successfully got a pretty speedy dual-boot of Windows 7 Starter and Ubuntu 10.10
I set up Burg, to well, replace Grub2 in favour of a more attractive interface and so far so good. I know that I can hide the older Ubuntu kernels/recovery slots by pressing the 'F'key. However, the Windows recovery partition still shows up. So it looks like this:
Ubuntu - Windows 7 - Windows Recovery (vista)
Basically, how can I hide the Windows Recovery partition? If I ever do need to use it, I can access it alternatively by pressing F4 at boot.
I have serious problems hiding the Grub menu at startup.
What I want to do is simple boot into the first (and only) item without showing the menu to the user.
I have removed everything on the system so the only option is "GNU/Linux, with Linux 2.6.32-30-generic" in the menu.
My /etc/default/grub is like this:

I have installed UNR 9.10 Karmic on new Asus EEE pc 1008HA to dual boot with XP. Like many new pc's it has a hidden partition to recover the factory hard disk settings and Microsoft Windows XP. Unfortunately, GRUB2 has picked this up and is showing the recovery system in the boot menu. Clearly this is dangerous because the user could reset the pc. How do I remove or hide this boot start up option? Other thoughts: I do not believe Easybcd works with xp/linux. is there another easy bootloader?

I have Koala with Grub 2, working fine. Just did some updates and now the boot menu is getting long, too many kernels. Want to reduce to the last two kernels plus Win XP, so got online and looked for instructions in English. News flash: Nobody seems to care about this issue, there is absolutely nothing to be found on it for Grub 2. There is a SIMPLE command for Grub, "howmany", in menulst. Menulst is not used in Grub 2, so that's out. OK I give up, after searching for over an hour for Grub 2's equivalent. Maybe someone here knows how it's done? I could remove the older kernels, but would rather just edit the boot menu. I found this for removing kernels: Open synaptic, do a search for "linux-image" and then remove the older kernels from your computer. Removing them via synaptic will remove them from the boot menu as well. Keep the kernel you are currently using plus one older one you know works. To find your current kernel: uname -r OK so I open synaptic and do the search. It comes up with maybe 200 files, some of which start with linux-image, scattered throughout the list. Oh boy, let a newbie loose on this. Just select and delete them all, why not? I can't tell one from another, the only difference is a cryptic number that means not one whit to me. There has to be a better way!
I got brave after editing etc/default/grub and doing update-grub, which reported the kernels by number, which I had forgotten. Then went back into Synaptic and hit the 'Sort By Installed' divider, which brought all the installed kernels to the top, where they make sense. Then I selected the two lowest-numbered and shot them in the head. They are gone.
i have been running Kubuntu 10.04 on my primary hard drive, and i have a second 1.5TB HD that i use for storage. so shrunk the secondary HD partition and created a second 50GB partition and i installed Ubuntu 10.10 on it and told it to rewrite the mbr on my primary HD. Where i am at: i took the menu entry from my Kubuntu "grub.cfg" and the entry from my Ubuntu "grub.cfg" and put them in the 40_custom file. so now when i boot-up my computer, it shows both installations at the bottom of Grub2s menu list. with all the menu entries that Grub automatically adds.
What i would like to know is how do i make it so that the Grub2 menu only shows the entries that i add to the 40_Custom file and not the randomly generated list aswell.
I just installed Debian squeeze. I installed grub to the MBR. It uses Grub 2. Apparently I'm not supposed to edit /boot/grub/grub.cnf, but /etc/default/grub and /etc/grub.d. I looked at these and read The Readme as well as a tutorial at [URL]. I'm still not sure of what to do. When I boot up I get 4 choices: 2 for Squeeze and two for another linux distro. I would like to edit the print out I get when I boot up, as well as add the partition for XP which wasn't included.

When I edit my applications menu to to hide games they stay on the menu. Everything else hides when prompted.
View 6 Replies View RelatedI recently installed lubuntu 10.10 on my Toshiba nb205. Everything works out of the box but the sound is really quiet even at max volume. This is not my main concern though. I also have Windows XP installed on the same computer. The problem is, after I installed lubuntu 10.10, Windows XP no longer shows up as a selectable os when I turn on the netbook. I can access the windows XP partition correctly through lubuntu and everything seems ok, but I need to be able to boot from windows xp (unfortunately). Is there a way to redetect my OSes on the computer?
View 9 Replies View RelatedI can't get Gkrellm to show my fan speeds anymore since reinstalling Ubuntu.I have tried 9.10 and 10.04 and tried installing packages to maybe get the drop down to show up for fan speed but still nothing.I have installed Xsensors and that shows fan speeds correctly but I want to show them in Gkrellm like I used to have. Now every other temp gauge is working like it used to but the fan speed monitor.

However there is nothing in network manager enabling me to choose the mobile broadband so I can't use it. I know there should be an entry "mobile broadband" after the wireless networks listed.
I know the dongle works because I have previously used it successfully- I was using Linux Mint 8 and have now updated to version 9 and when I have tried to use it have been unable to do so.
I have gone into the connections and my 3 connection is present but there is no way for me to select it in network manager.
I have a new 320gb sata II drive that I'm going to install win-xp-home & Ubuntu.I also have Linux XP 2010 that I will install.I'm going to use Gparted.My question is , What's the best partition plan for multiple OSes?320 GBs is plenty of room to work with.I'll have to use windows for my TV tuner cards till I get drivers for Linux.What would be a good partition arrangement?

I'm running a dual-boot machine with Win7 Ultimate 64bit and Ubuntu 11.04 64bit, both kept up-to-date. Now the weird problem is that I don't get any sound at all except in Ubuntu. Everything works fine here, but Win7 is silent since a couple of days. At first I thought it was a Win7 problem, but it isn't. And I don't have a dedicated sound card but am using onboard/internal sound.
In the meantime I've installed several others Linux distros (the latest versions of Zenwalk, Vector Linux, and anti-X to be precise) instead of Ubuntu, and I didn't get any sound at all in any of them. So I've now re-installed Ubuntu 11.04 from scratch and have I sound again, yet still only in Ubuntu and not Win7. And I've also installed Win7 from scratch, just to be sure.
For those who are familiar with Windows, the "green volume bars" are nicely moving up and down (yeah, very technical phrasing) when I'm playing videos or music as they are supposed to - there's just no sound to hear. The reason why I think that this problem is related to / caused by Ubuntu is that everything worked fine until the last Ubuntu update a couple of days ago. And if it was a Windows problem, at least the other Linux distros ought to produce sound.
The system came with Windows 7 installed.
After installing Ubuntu 11.04 (Natty) with Unity, I installed Xubuntu 11.04. All three OSes could be seen in the GRUB menu and I could boot any OS of choice.
Then I installed OpenSUSE 11.4. I suspect it installed legacy GRUB on the OpenSUSE root partition. Thereafter, I was not able to boot Ubuntu or Xubuntu.
I have now used a LiveCD (system rescue mode) to re-install GRUB on the MBR. However, I can only boot Win7 or Ubuntu. Can't access Xubuntu or OpenSUSE.

How does one back up the oses and increase the partition size?
I have a dual boot of Windows 7 and Ubuntu and have made the partitions for each too small. I want to save them and then reinstall them on the new partitions. I've tried clonezilla, but it only restores them to the original partitions. How can I reinstall them on the new partitions?
Does anyone here knows how to share files/folder with two different GNU/Linux OSes?
I have a notebook and desktop computer here. The Operating System of my notebook is Easypeasy and my desktop computer is Linux Mint. I already install the Samba on both computers. I could open the folders that I shared under my Documents. But when I tried to open the shared folder under the NTFS drives or even the drives itself (of my notebook or desktop computer) it will prompt an error.
This is the error: "Unable to mount location. Failed to mount Windows share."
I just moved my bottom panel to the right side of the screen and set it to auto-hide., The panel hid it'self but will not un-hide when I move the mouse to the edge of the screen... I tried to re-boot, but the panel is still "stuck"Is there an easy way to fix this? Or will I have to manualy delete the panel and make a new one

i cant boot to windows 7.
Windows 7 have 100 mb partition "System Reserved" the grub2 points to that partition but still windows 7 not loaded.

View 2 Replies View RelatedI installed Fedora 15, which was my first real departure from Debian based Linux OSs. I absolutely love the new Gnome 3, and was able to configure F15 to work as I wanted it to. On rebooting I realized that there was no boot loader screen, that F15 just booted and didn't give me a choice as to which OS I wanted to use. Eventually I was able to configure grub to let me see the boot loader and added my old boot loader as a choice. This worked well, maybe not a perfect solution, but it worked. This weekend I installed LMDE (Linux Mint Debian Edition) to another HDD. LMDE uses grub2 and after the install F15 was not recognized.
Two questions: Is there a way for grub2 to see F15? or Can F15 be installed using grub2? I really don't mind re-installing from scratch.

In a Dell Poweredge 2550 (I think it doesn't say on the case)
Ubuntu 10.10 (Installed Via remote boot - Has gnome GUI, LAMP, Apache etc.)
I would like to play some games on this server to take advantage of the CPU's (the fastest I have) The Graphics card can display up to 1152x864 so It should be able to handle some 3d gaming but it I try to play tux racer it is very slow and only changes the frame every second, must be very low FPS also glxgears gives me in-between 50 and 60 fps and most people seem to get 500+!
The problem is not compiz because it is no-longer installed and I think I am using the open-source ati drivers not fglx.
I can't see my windows frame in unity, I have no way to enlarge, close, minimize or move my windows around. How to bring them back?

I keep getting low frame rates while playing avi and mkv video files. I have tried messing around with the vsync option in compiz and the Catalyst control center but all to no avail.
I have read there are more ATI users with this problem. Is there a way to fix this?
I am looking for a video editor that will let me open an AVI video and then save individual frames as image files (preferably JPG), I looked through the "Ubuntu Software Center" the only one that I found in there that would do this is "Video Cut" but when I try to open the 600+ meg AVI video I have it closes a moment later.
Anyone know of a video editor that will open a file this big and not crash?
