Ubuntu :: Photorec Rovered File Directories Permissions?

I recently accidentally deleted a wrong directory of images from a USB memory stick, which I managed to successfully recover using Photorec . Photorec created a couple of directories (which I asked it to put in Documents), which i was then able to re copy back onto the USB disc. My problem now however is that I do not need that almost 4GB of files on my PC but I cannot delete them since the files are all root owner, and being somewhat new to ubuntu I am not sure of how to go about changing the permissions and deleting these files.

I'm just wondering: I know that umask sets the default file permissions for files, however I want to know if there is anyway to set default file permissions for newly created directories.
For example, I want my user to create new directories that anyone can access and modify (777) but I want the new files the user creates to be 755 (read by everyone, written only by user).
Is this possible?

I want to make a webserver with multiple users allowed to login through SFTP to a specific folder, www.Multiple users are added, lets say user1 and user2, and all of them belonging to the www-data group. The www directory has an owner www-data and a group www-data.
I have used chmod -R 775 on the www folder, but after I try to create a folder test through my SFTP server (using Filezilla) the group of the directory created has only r and x permissions, and I am not able to log in with the second user user2 and create a directory within www/test due to a lack of w permission to the group.
I also tried using chmod 2775 on www directory, but without luck. Can somebody explain to me, how can I make it so that a newly created directory inherits the root directory group permissions?

I'm planning a NFS share for a small enterprise (25 NFS clients). I need to create a directory structure but I'll need to set up differents permissions (rw/ro) to some directories of the tree. I wonder if it's possible to grant access using groups IDs, so that would be ideal for this application. Is it possible? I was thinking that I would kneed some kind of centralized user info, such as NIS or LDAP. Is that necessary?

I try to use rsync for backing up some directories and I have to following problem: some files have permissions that prevent me from running rsync under my own user id. So I run it under root using the option "-a" which according to the man page should preserve the permissions, owner and group information:
However, when I run this under root, the directories created in the backup location get user root and group root while ordinary files keep the original user and group. What am I missing here? How can I get rsync to preserve the user and groups for all files, including directories?
Here is a command to illustrate my problem

sudo rsync -a /home/youruser /tmp
If you try that and terminate with Ctrl-C after a few seconds, there will be a directory /tmp/youruser where the directories contained within are owned by root group root.

I tried using Nautilus - nada (under root no less). Tried using file browser (nada again) Tried going to "places" and the directory I wanted - right click, permissions won't let me change squat. The folders I want to change are shared folders on my network at home and sometimes I transfer files between computers to different places. Can't do it tho, cuz of the permissions. Is CHMOD the answer? If so, how do I do it? For instance, In terminal, I issued the command (as root) chmod 777 movies I thought this would allow any device in the house to write to this directory, but the permissions didn't change at all. So what do I have to do?
On my Ubuntu machine I simply run Nautilus as root and it allows me to do this.
So what's different in Fedora?

Is there a way to restrict users that are logged into the shell via SSH/Telnet/SFTP from using the 'cd' command to move into certain directories, yet not use the chmod command to do it? For instance, restrict users logged in from accessing the /var/www/ folder but have it still accessible using a web browser. Also, would this defeat the purpose since they could just wget from it if its still web accessible through a browser?

i have an ntfs mount that i wish to change permissions of individual directories.i have mounted many ntfs volumes successfully, mounting is not the issue. the issue is that when mounting, i need to specify 'blanket' permissions, owner, group etc. i have no idea how to change permissions for individual folders.

I am running Ubuntu 9.04, and wish to share a folder to be accessed without logging in via Windows Vista. If I set up the share through the nautilus right-click menu and enable "Guest Account", the share is inaccessible. The folder shows up, but it fails to mount. Vista says that it can see the computer, but not the shared folder.
The folder is
/home/william/shared
The only way I can get it to work is if I change the permissions of the folder /home/william to allow Others to access files.

I've got a small issue that when a Windows user creates a new folder through Windows Explorer (from the menu or by right clicking) the new folder is only accessible to that particular user. Example: user SABKAR (member of the HR group) creates a new folder called MarcTestMenu in a shared Samba directory through Windows Explorer:

After what feels like weeks have tinkering around trying to get a Samba file server set up, I've finally given up! I have 4 drives and 2 groups:
1) Dev - Available to all users in both groups (normal and admin)
2) Misc - Available to users in admin group only
3) Admin - Available to users in admin group only
4) Accounts - Available to users in admin group only
Drives 1 and 2 are working fine, with the correct access rights. Drives 3 and 4 can be browsed by admins only, but no changes can be made at all - files & directories can't be renamed/moved/deleted. What is most confusing is that Drive 2 is set up exactly the same as Drives 3 and 4. The process I went through to get them working:

I just used photorec to recover files from a 40GB laptop HDD. I saved the files to my video folder in my Home folder. Now my home folder is full. When I login to my computer, in about 30 second I get this error:

Yeah, I killed my disk, I was tired, or I dont know the crap what I did that day.
After several times using Photorec, it is basic program that has no other better alternative. It can try to recover files. But one is limited by: - one cannot select a new type of files, example avi extensino isnt in there even and one has a limited possibilities of files - it is not recovering folders, because it doesnt care. it cannot create a new *.img (raw or gz) file of a crashed harddisk, *.img that is readable my mounting + loop one have to have a larger size harddisk to recover your data one has to seek the whole harddisk, and the user cannot have a list of files, and then give the possibility to recover (copy) only the one wanted to be recovered photorec does not recover the filenames even, Or is there better program / code from Freebsd or MacOsX or windows (all platform) that we could compile? I mean that cannot be. In Windows there is so many apps and disk utilities. something exactly like this for ext3:[URL]..

My main partition having all my data like movies, music, files,etc has become inaccessible. Its file system was NTFS. Due to some recent resizing using GParted, the partition as well as my WIndows 7 OS has become unbootable due to some errors. The data partition's file system has become unknown. I don't care much about the OS but I would like to recover my drive. I am trying to achieve this using Testdisk and Photorec but haven't met with much success so far. The main problem is I can see my partition and all my files through Testdisk but I am not able to copy them to another drive. When I try to copy the option I get is of copying them to the DVD and not to any other partition.

I used photorec to recover lost files and it brought up 70gb worth of files, when I was done looking through them I deleted these files. but these files still seem to be taking up my disk space. When I try to access my trash bin with root I get a message that reads...."The folder contents could not be displayed. sorry, could not display all the contents of "trash": operation not supported." if I open my trash bin when I'm not in root, the bin is empty.
How do I free up my disk space?

I was doing some data recovery with Photorec and by the time I was done I have over 700 folders (recup_dir.).The only solution I was able to apply was the one posted by pljvaldez on this site dated 04-09-08, 09:01 AM. After doing the same thing for at least 70 times I decided to ask, so, is there anyone that knows how to delete multiple folders at the same time.

I want to back up an entire Linux system on a 3Tb external Western DIgital USB3 drive.
I do not want to reformat it from what it is, apparemtly NTFS.
Is there a utility that can act like a file manager like mc, that will permit me to create an ever expanding (to 320Gb) TAR file that will retain all the original file permissions. I have had nothing but disappointment with Linux backup utils with a FAT32 external drive, and I am concerned if I just try an tar the entire drive at once, with around 3 million files, I might run out of memory.

I have an ntfs partition that I wish to access as a normal user(non-root). For this I did the following. As root I created a folder /windows and did a chmod 777 -R on /windows. Then I added the following line to /etc/fstab

Now, the partition is mounted alright but the problem is that when any other user (non-root) creates a files in /windows (say by executing touch newfile) the newly created file has the owner and group set as root. The non-root user can create the file and he can also delete the file, however, he cannot change the permissions of the file and also the owner:group is always set as root:root. How do I get across this problem, i.e. how do I mount a partition, so that a non-root user can also change the permissions and ownerships of the files he creates.

I have system at work I am setting up that runs on linux, it was powered up back in september but we didn't get the details to configure until this week, unfortunatly var filled up with 100% spaced used due to a log file that keeps being written to until its intizilized, I can't just delete the file so (will not be recreated), I pulled it off and took it home and split it into a smaller file (from 740mb down to a 15mb chunk)I'm really just a linux newbie so can someone explain to me what the permissions are on the current file and then what chmod would make smaller file the same. clusternet.log is the orginal and clusternet1.log is the one i made from split. I know its read, write and execute (whats the r write after x on clusternet.log?) but I'm not sure on what it means in the position its in, the clusternet.log should have permissions only for root correct?

i am trying to set the file permissions for the log files "/var/log/Xorg.0.log" and "/var/log/gdm/:0.log". These files seem to be created when a user logs into a whokstation (my guess so far). I am trying to comply with a security mandate that all log files in the directory /var/log are set to 0640. The two mentioned files always seem to have the permissions 0644, does anyone know where and when these filea are created and how I might set the permissions when the files are created

Any way to add / remove directories within the Unity File Manager?If so how, If not and Ubuntu is looking to make Unity its default file manager... I will just have to say goodbye to Ubuntu. After all what's a file manager if you can't add or remove files or directories.
