Ubuntu :: No Desktop After Update & Upgrade?

Dec 11, 2010

After my latest maverick apt-get update & upgrade, a new kernel is installed (2.6.35-24-generic). Everything seems to be fine but if I choose it, no desktop is loaded. It ends with a console and a login request. I can't boot-up the gnome desktop unless I choose the former kernel (2.6.35-23-generic).

After the update I rebooted my machine and now when I log in it plays my log in sound but I don't get my desktop and I have no idea where to start looking. I am running 10.10. I don't think it is a driver issue as I am able to get a desktop if I log in as a low graphics modeUPDATE:I was able to get into the system and ran the following command:sudo apt-get -f installand I received the following error message:

Ubuntu :: Desktop Broken Since Upgrade?

May 2, 2011

Curious thing happening since upgrade. The desktop toolbar is invisible, although I can get click and access the drop down menus for login, calander, power settings etc. Alt-tab works in 2D. The new desktop icons for natty are also invisible. I have tied to access a terminal using Alt-F2, but terminal window doesnt open. I had compiz running on previous 10.10 installation. I am at a loss as to where to begin fixing this. If I didn't have a windows 7 installation partition that would get screwed up I would flatten the installation and download and install a fresh install, but I do and I don't want to go through that pain if I don't have to.

Running Lenovo 3000 C200 with intel gm1345 gfx.

I tried to upgrade to 11.04 from 10.10 but my system got hanged in the middle of installation and then i couldn't reboot into it. So I tried upgrading using bootable ubuntu 11.04 pendrive. After the upgrade when i tried to boot into 11.04, the display went very dim (almost invisible). It happens just after I select ubuntu from grub menu. I tried booting into recovery mode, tty mode but nothing was visible.Although everything works. I was able to open terminal using Ctrl+Alt+T which was slighly visible and shut down using halt command though I couldn't see it.

Ubuntu :: Desktop Won't Load After The Update

Jul 23, 2011

I recently began using Ubuntu 11.04, having a dual boot setup alongside Windows 7. Everything worked perfectly fine until the last update of Ubuntu occurred. After the update I rebooted my system (as you do) to "Ubuntu, with Linux 2.6.38-10-generic." When I do this it does one of two things: a) the Terminal loads and the cursor sits there blinking boringly achieving nothing and doing nothing the OS does not get very far into loading. Or b) A number of checks run automatically then pause and it goes nowhere and I'm left with a screen full of System checks. So, what I do is I load a previous version of Ubuntu "Ubuntu, with Linux 2.6.38-8-generic" and this loads no trouble.

When I try to upgrade to 10.04 (from 9.10) I receive the following message:
An unresolvable problem occurred while calculating the upgrade: The package 'ubuntu-desktop' is marked for removal but it is in the removal blacklist.

Ubuntu Installation :: Upgrade 10.04 To 10.10 - No Desktop Session

I cannot start the desktop session: After upgrading from 10.04 to 10.10 (dual-boot system) via Alt+F2 as suggested on [URL]. Grub loads fine after reboot (booting Windows works, Upgrade without errors). If I boot Ubuntu (no matter which Kernel, etc.), I end up in shell (black screen + prompt, stating the new Ubuntu version) and being asked to log in. Entering my name and pw results in the shell prompt changing to my name, but nothing else. So how do I start the desktop session? Repairing packages had no effect...

Ubuntu :: Desktop Icons Not Visible On 10.10 After Upgrade

Oct 12, 2010

When I log into the standard netbook environment (not the one called 2D) I get a blank desktop with blank (yet active) bars across the top and on the left of the screen. Mousing over the invisible icons on the left opens empty text boxes of varying sizes showing how long the name of the application is... I can open the applications by clicking blindly on that bar. The bar across the top is also active, I can open the menues by clicking in the right corner and moving the mouse until the one I want is open.

I have tried removing and reinstalling Unity as well as installing and removing fglrx. I posted originally in the following thread until I realised the OP there was describing a very different problem:

Ubuntu :: Upgrade Netbook Version To Desktop?

I am making the switch to Linux and I really love Ubuntu. My DVD player isn't working, so I'm using my flash drive. It was too small for the desktop installer, so I used the netbook. I'm installing it as I type this (having the browser thats available for browsing while installing is awesome!)

Is there a way to upgrade to move to the desktop version after I finish? Also, what's the difference between the two. Links are fine. I tried google, but my google-fu must not be too strong today.

Ubuntu Installation :: Upgrade From 10.10 To 11.04 Failed - Can't Get To The Desktop

Apr 28, 2011

I used Kubuntus kpackagekit to upgrade to natty. The process started well, it downloaded everything and started to install 11.04. But then all of a sudden during Installing stage I got this error message:

"Distribution upgrade process exited with code 1"

and

"Your system might be unusable".

And it sure is unusable because after reboot I can only see Kubuntu 10.10 loading screen and

"The disk drive for / is not ready yet or not present".

There also are options for either skip mounting or manually mount hard disks. I don't have a clue how to manually mount... I get same message if I try to boot to safe mode. Does this mean I have to go to clean install? I really don't want to do that because last time it took a couple of months to get ubuntu to co-operate well enough with my laptop.

Ubuntu :: Upgrade To Natty Has Borked My Desktop

May 22, 2011

I'm was running 64bit maverick on an intel i3 clarkdale desktop; pretty much vanilla with the compiz spinning cube desktop displaying on my 720p HDMI telly. On 'upgrading' to natty my pc refused to display anything on the telly but can still be connected to via ssh. Assuming unity was the culprit I installed gnome and deleted unity; after plugging in a VGA monitor I finallly got an output onto a display device, then managed to configure the HDMI telly as a secondary display. Gnome is just a backdrop with no panels at all; I managed to get panels by ctrl-alt-T and typing 'gnome-panel &'; but this was only a temporary fix. If I try to run a terminal now it locks X and I can only restart via the ssh session.

Currently all I have if I boot is the gnome backdrop. The pc auto logs on (as it did under maverick) so alternate logon screens can't be accessed as pretty much all I can do is run stuff via an ssh shell on my other pc.

What I'd like to do is have my desktop how it was before natty trashed it. Preferably without unity or its very irritating scroll bar widgets.
