OpenSUSE Install :: Uncheck Show_desktop Mouse Pointer Changes To Moving Circle?
Nov 28, 2009I am creating an openSUSE 11.2 Kiosk image. I have everything pretty much locked down but when I go into the gconf-editor under /apps/nautilius/preferences/show_desktop and uncheck the check box my mouse pointer changes to the circle icon that looks like it moves in a circle. Sortta like the busy or what it does during boot. Hard to describe by typing it out but if you make that change you'll see what I am talking about. I had this setup like this in previous versions of openSUSE so I am not sure what it is doing or what else I need to do to make the mouse pointer just the arrow like normally. I don't want the users to be able to right-click on the desktops to get a menu nor add icons so unchecking the show_desktop has served my needs.

Jul 25, 2011I got a used Gateway Solo 9550 from a friend. It was running windows when I got it. So I decided to try to test Debian on it. I am relatively new to the Linux scene so I have had a few issues with no idea how to fix them. The biggest one is video. I can get it the laptop to boot up in recovery mode and have nomodeset enabled. With nomodeset in gnome it will work for approx. 20-30 seconds, and then the screen will turn white then to black and then slowly turn rainbow. I know that its not a monitor problem because I ran DSL and DSLN on the same rig, but when I plugin an external monitor its fine on the external but not on the internal.

Fedora Networking :: Macs Can't Follow Sym Link?
Jan 10, 2011I have what I thought would be a simple issue: I have a Linux server and a bunch of people with Macs on a small business network.I'm trying to set it up so that using AFP, people can access the Linux server and drag and drop files to our test web development server. In each person's home directory there's a sym link to the /var/www/html directory, so that they can easily plop their test files there.I've got the hard part taken care of: AFP works, the Linux server appears on the network, and the Mac users can connect and log in.However, my sym link doesn't show up as a directory inside the Mac Finder...it shows up as an application. I don't know if this is something as simple as a permissions problem or whether I need to do more configuring to get AFP to play nice.

Sep 16, 2011I've got two primary computers, one Mac Pro and one MacBook Pro for when I'm on the go. I've also got a Linux sever which also acts as NAS. Currently I backup the entire computers to an external drive with Time Machine which is rather useless and doesn't sync anything. What I really want to do is to keep my important files synced between both computers and my NAS (which is running RAID 5), that way I'm not backing up easily replaceable systemfiles and I've got all my important files in 3 places where two of them are running raid so at least 5 drives would have to crash at the same time before actual data loss occur.
Folders I want to keep synced is basically my photo, documents, development, mamp and work folders and then I want to keep the user library folder backed up but not synced. I'm thinking that I'd have to use rsync but don't know how. Before suggesting Dropbox and similar suggestions I don't want to use them because of several reasons some of them being security (Dropbox obviously proved this), Speed (sometimes I'll sync gigabytes of data and that will be significantly faster locally and probably even through VPN as I have a Gigabit pipe), Space (space on my NAS is cheap and only practically limited by my needs), reliability (even if my internet were to go down I still need to be able to keep my files synced incase I'd need to go somewhere on the fly), price (I already have all the hardware and for the amount of gigabytes and bandwidth I'd need I doubt that there's any free or cheap service). Those are my main reason for wanting to keep it locally.

I have a SATA storage device that has presents a GUI to the user in a simple Linux installation, and ideally it should be platform independent, i.e. boot up into the GUI in all platforms. I'm having mostly success on various PCs, however, it's not booting up in a Macbook Pro that I have. AFAIK the MBPs and all modern Mac systems use EFI rather than BIOS, could this be the problem?

Dec 17, 2010So my aim is to install openSUSEx64 11.3 onto my Macbook; but for whatever reason, upon boot-up, the system won't recognize the USB thumb drive with the expanded image of openSUSE on it. I followed steps in Terminal to expand the image onto the said USB stick and know it worked properly because Terminal said "Process Completed." Do I need a special type of USB thumb drive or am I missing something? I am using a late-2009 Macbook. By the way, these were the steps used to prep the USB thumb stick:
1. Open a Terminal (under Utilities)
2. Run diskutil list to get the current list of devices
3. Insert your flash media
4. Run diskutil list again and determine the device node assigned to your flash media (e.g. /dev/disk2)
5. Run diskutil unmountDisk /dev/diskN
6. Execute sudo dd if=/path/to/downloaded.img of=/dev/diskN bs=1m
7. Run diskutil eject /dev/diskN and remove your flash media when the command completes

May 14, 2010I recently picked up a Trendnet TEW-644UB USB wireless device to use with an older laptop I have that runs 10.04 when I plus the dongle into the system it detects it right away and it even can see wireless networks! The only problem is that it cannot actually make a connection. I enter the wifi key and then it spins in a circle for awhile before failing.

May 2, 2011I've upgraded to 11.04 and now Evolution doesn't work right. It shows there are unread messages in my inbox, but when I click on it, it says "Error Generating Message List" at the bottom, with an exclamation mark in a red circle. When I click on that, it says "database disk image is malformed". I've uninstalled and reinstalled Evolution, but get the same message.

It does the same thing with Ubuntu 10.04.1. In Windows 7 and XP the mouse is normal. I don't know how I could adjust it or is this just a bug in the OS?

When I switch the device on, the system boots and Xorg comes up, I can see X cursor on the system. When I start sending mouse move events from the application, the cursor do not move. If I attach mouse to the device and then move the mouse, from this point onwards the mouse events get detected from the simulation application. I have checked the dmesg log as follows

I tested it with 3 makes/models of different mice and trackballs. For some reason (left+right) mouse returns the same code as the single right-button ('xev' value = 3). From System->Preferences->Mouse, I set the various mouse Pointer Speed acceleration and Sensitivity to Slow, Fast, Low, High, and and I couldn't get it any better.
