Ubuntu :: Mouse Is Not Reacting In Some Buttons And Links
May 20, 2011
I have recently did a fresh install of Ubuntu 11.04 before that i had 10.04. in the new inselation i have a problem with the mouse that did not exist before: some of the radio buttons and some links in web pages are not responsive. further more, writing this post, the mouse does not change its icon to text icon when i hover over the post's text. it happens also in web pages when it does not change to hyper-link icon over some links. it seems that there is a cretin area in the canter screen where it happens.

A couple of weeks ago I installed a new 4-core Lenovo PC and installed Squeeze on it - keeping it updated every day. When kdm or gnome display the login screen, my USB-connected keyboard and mouse don't react. When I then unplug and re-attach them into the same socket everything ist fine. Surely this can't be working as intended? I can however get into BIOS-Setup as usual during the initial boot-phase by pressing Crtl-S and F1. Things also are fine when selecting the debian version to run from the multi-boot screen.
I am enclosing the kern.log of the last boot below (don't know how to attach files!). In that I can see that on line 530 ist says New USB device found, idVendor=046d, idProduct=c03e (address: 5; optical Logitech mouse) and then on line 542 New USB device found, idVendor=046d, idProduct=c31c (address: 6; keyboard).
It seems to get "interesting again on line 632 etc. with the message usb 2-1.8: USB disconnect, address 6.

I play World Of Warcraft and in Windows I used a program that allowed me to map my 2 side buttons to one being CTRL and the other ALT to make for much easier keybindings. Does anyone know how I can do this with ubuntu?

I've recently installed Ubuntu 10.10 as a dual partition with Windows 7 running alongside. I'm trying it out for almost over an hour, but this very unusual problem came up - after around 20 minutes while system is running, the mouse stops responding. its still working - it moves, the red light thingi is still on, but the buttons aren't responding.
it has the same symptoms every time - system runs for around 10-20 minutes, then left button stops working. 2 minutes later the right one joins as well, and from that moment its a matter of seconds till the mouse wheel won't respond too this has happened 3 times already, and last time it happened after a while the right button & the mouse wheel started working for about 2 minutes and then stopped responding again. do you guys have ANY clue what this is? am I pressing on a hotkey or something like that which is causing this thing?

I've upgraded to FC11 and I've noticed that the extra buttons on my Logitech mx1000 mouse are now detected. However most of them aren't mapped to anything. In the past one would start changing the /etc/X11/xorg.conf file. Lately, there seems to be movement away from changing this file and I notice that the default xorg.conf has no entry in it for the mouse. Is there a new preferred way to map mouse buttons? I'd like to make buttons 6 and 7 scroll horizontally and button 10 instruct compiz to show all windows.

I am running 9.10 (Karmic) on a Compaq Presario CQ60 laptop with Nvidia graphics. I have installed the -185 driver which has solved most problems. However every so often the system seems to lose track of the mouse button state. The first symptom of this is that all mouse movements on text are treated as if the left button is being held down: mouse movement selects text rather than just moving the graphics cursor. I am using a M$ optical mouse.
I have tried:unplugging and replugging the mouse using Ctl-Alt-F1 to go into a console and Ctl-Alt-F7 to go back to the GUI I am able to shut down all of the open windows normally using the keyboard, but the only way I have so far found to get the GUI working again is to reboot the system.

I've been playing a fair amount of Minecraft. Awesome game, but I really dislike that the mouse buttons bindings aren't editable. I was wondering if there was a program out there for Linux that can remap a mouse button (Like [Right Click]) to a key on your keyboard. (Like the [Spacebar]) I've done some digging around, but nothing shows up to edit the three standard mouse buttons, just the extended ones.

i'm looking for a way to map some of my mouse buttosn to activate certain keyboard shortcuts.I went thru the Compiz setting Manager but they only allow predetermined actions to be mapped. What I want, for example is to map a mouse button to trigger SHIFT+A to quiclky mark items as read in Google Reader or another one to quickly select unread emails in Gmail.

As far back as I can remember, on any Linux system, not just Ubuntu, you could use the mouse to highlight a chunk of text, and then by clicking both mouse buttons at the same time, you could paste that high-lighted text wherever you want. I had used this all the time on my previous Ubuntu installations... until now. In Ubuntu 11.04 I don't have this luxury anymore.

It appears that clicking on a link in Firefox doesn't work until you move the mouse, i.e. if I put the mouse on a link and hold it stationary and click the link, nothing happens, but as soon as I move the mouse, the link then activates. Sometimes, I have to double click the link to get it to work. I've read some posts where people claim that Firefox "freezes" until you move the mouse. In my case, Firefox doesn't "freeze" in the traditional sense. It just that clicking a link doesn't behave properly as it should. I didn't have this problem in 8.04LTS (or previous distributions for that matter) only in 10.04LTS. I'm running the 32-bit version on a Dell Latitude D600 laptop with nvidia-common driver 0.2.23.

Nautilus goes back and forward with alt-left and alt-right.
Just like firefox only firefox responds to my corresponding mouse buttons.
How can I get Nautilus to do that?
If I can't get Nautilus itself to do that, I thought I could bind the buttons to alt-left and alt-right in CCSM. But I don't know how to enter keystrokes as a command.

I want to make use of extra buttons on my Logitech RX1000 mouse.
For e.g. the zoom button I would like it to show windows on my desktop (ctrl+F9).
I've fired up xev and found out that this is button 8:
Code:
Then I've added to ~/.xbindkeysrc:
Code:
But that doesn't work at all.

On windows I have an autohotkey script which:
- Only works when caps lock is on
- Generates left, middle and right mouse button events when left control, menu and alt keys are pressed
- Allows holding the keys down (for dragging objects)
Is there an easy way of duplicating this functionality in linux?

I have a nice new Teac OX-1100 mouse with two extra multimedia buttons that supposedly perform the Zoom functions in Windows. When I try to get the scancodes with "xev", "xbindkeys -k", "showkey", or "showkey
-s" then I see no output. There are some other functional keys on this mouse which also show no output with those tools, such as the side scroll feature.

I've run in to one problem which makes me go back to Windows 7,and that's not being able to change my extra mouse buttons to function as volume up and down. I watch a lot of movies and series on my PC, and I use my wireless mouse to control volume and to pause and play. The last 2 are no problem, but I can't seem to find an option to change the function of the extra mouse buttons.I've looked all over the net, and read various forums, they don't have a clear answer or even an idea how to accomplish this. So I turned to this forum, which I should have done in the first place.

On every version the mouse buttons stop working after a few clicks, on the trackpad and with a USB mouse. lock panel is checked if i right click. If i uncheck lock panel it will work for a little bit longer then stops. Anybody know how to fix this? This is my first time using ubuntu and i really want to love it. Had xp before on the Dell, but I don't like it. We're a Mac family, but if this works ubuntu could change our minds!

I'm trying to find a GUI program (not a terminal command) to bind the 4th and 5th buttons on my mouse to ALT+Tab and Escape. I tried BTNX however I encountered the error "btnx-config needs the file /etc/btnx/events to run". A good example of what I'm looking for with screenshots on it's site is X-Mouse Button Control which I've been using on XP however it's not available for Linux.

I typically have pidgin and amsn, as well as firefox and thunderbird running.Once in a while, the left mouse button ceases to function as the left button, and the right button becomes the left button, or almost.. I wonder if this is a bug, or am I hitting the left-handed-mouse function while typing accidentally??

I have a wireless keyboard with touchpad However the position of the mouse buttons is very unconfortable and so I would like to remap the mouse button to some kes on the keyboard.
I would like to use the media keys which are present on the keyboard. They are useless to me since most of the programs that I use have their own keyboard shortcuts for controls such as play, stop etc.
I mapped the keys using xev, and for instance I found that the "play" key mapped to keycode 172
by trying someting like
xmodmap -e "keycode 172 = Pointer_Button1"
nothing happens.

Okay, I have been all over the web... all over JustLinux and pretty much spent several months trying to find one simple answer. How do I easily map two applications to my trackball?I have a Kensington Expert Mouse Model K64325. It has a scroll wheel, and 4 mouse buttons. I have used xev to figure out which button is which. The upper left = 2 and the upper right = 8. I want the upper left to open Firefox when I click it. I want the upper right to open REALBasic when I click it.I know this can be done (really easily too!) in Windows. I want to do it in Linux. Especially since I have several systems like this. Also I can then take what I learn from my own experience and start mapping OTHER people that are total Linux newbs, mice for them.
The mouse works great all I want are the two feature/options I just listed and I cannot find a single answer anywhere on the web that seem to address my question. SO I am hoping someone here will have a laymans answer.

After spending quite a few hours resurrecting it, it works just fine except for the left and right mouse buttons on the touch pad. They do not function. Is there a way to emulate the left and right mouse buttons from the keyboard?(I know that I can just plug in a mouse, but I would rather just use the keyboard if possible.)

I have a Logitech ambidextrous trackball, with a left and right mouse button. The trackball device also has two smaller left and right buttons. I'd like to know how those two smaller buttons are addressed. Ultimately, I'd like to assign certain keystrokes to them, to make work faster. For example, ALT+<right arrow> moves a browser back one page. how to name these keys, or whether/how I should address this USB mouse. FWIW, I'm actually using it through the PS/2 mouse adapter, since that doesn't take a USB slot.

I'm trying out various windows mgrs and I'd love to be able to preserve certain key mappings...
...but what's REALLY important are the MOUSE KEYS!!!!!!!
I use the mouse left-handed. I can set that in Gnome or KDE easily, but if I go into, say Ratpoison, it's un-set again.
Is there a system-wide (or as close to it as possible) mouse setting?
