I am making a backup of ubuntu repos using debmirror. but i excluded lucid-security lucid-updates and lucid-backports. i selected dist=lucid and downloaded main,multiverse,universe and restricted. if i dont download updates, secuirty and backports am missing anything important. i am into development

Does Ubuntu or anyone else have such a backup utility? It would be nice to have it all the packages documented somewhere in case I ever have to reinstall and figure out what packages I installed.
View 3 Replies View Related/etc is where your gnu/linux stores it's configuration. Its function is similar to the Windoze registry. As you install, uninstall, and work with various programs, /etc changes. Sometimes, things change that make your system act unexpectedly.
1) open a console
2) su enter root password
3) # mkdir /var/backup
4) # vim /usr/sbin/prep4change replace "vim" with text editor of your choice
5) cut and paste the following short script

Next time you are about to install, remove, or change something, just issue prep4change as root. If the unthinkable ( but expected ) should happen, and things stop working correctly, you have your /etc and /boot already backed up. Your backup will be located in /var/backup You can also $ tail /var/backup/notes to see why you made what backup Again, this isn't the most elegant, but it's simple, and it works!
I'm syncing a server over the internet with rsync, but it only works for a few hours before the backup fails with a "No route to host". I can restart the job and it'll will pick up where it left off, but is there an automated way to do this, or protect against a connection failure? I have about 170GB to copy over initially, but I can only get through about 4-5GB before the connection drops--manually restarting the sync everytime it drops will make the initial backup take days...

This is my problem: My wife wants me to backup some Windows NTFS partitions on her working computer so she can use them on a different computer.
This is my solution attempt:Boot the Gentoo based System Rescue CD. dd the contents of the data partitions into *.img files on an external usb drive. dd the contents of the *.img files onto the new computer.
So far that worked, but there's one annoying problem: one partition on the work computer is 50GB big, but contains only 8GB of data. It would be really nice if I could just dd out those 8GB of "real data" instead of having a 50GB *.img file that is mostly empty. Likewise, it would be cool if there's an easy way to match the contents of the *.img file to the size of the new partition. The new data partition is 100GB big so it would be cool if my backup were automatically scaled to that size so I don't have an 8GB partition and an additional 92GB partition.
Is it possible to make an ISO of the distribution already installed? Well actually, I have made various changes according to my choice and don't want to do them again if I have to reinstall.

I have a scheduled backup to run on our server at work and since the 7/12/09 it has be making 592k files instead of 10Mb files, In mysql-admin (the GUI tool) I have a stored connection for the user 'backup', the user has select and lock rights on the databases being backed up. I have a backup profile called 'backup_regular' and in the third tab along its scheduled to backup at 2 in the morning every week day. If I look at one of the small backup files generated I see the following:

It seems that MySQL can open and write to the file fine, it just can't dump
I've tried to google but not much luck. What I would like to do is have anumber of folders on my desktop and their contents, replicated/duplicated into another folder on the same PC in real time. So for example, if I were to change an OpenOffice document in a specific folder on my Desktop it would be replicated/duplicated in real time. If I had three folders on my Desktop A, B and C they would also appear/be backed up (in real time) in a folder called /home/backup. Can this be done?

I managed somehow to create a script to make some backup of files on server and TAR it and then FTP the archive to another location FTP server and then emails result.
It also measures time needed to complete it and deletes archive older than XX days (set in find -mtime +20) and makes incremental backup every weekday and FULL on Sundays (which suits me bcoz no heavy load).
Files for TAR to include and exclude are in txt files listed each line separate name:

This script simply deletes files older than a certain age (in this case 7 days) from a certain location; I use it to purge old backups nightly, and it works as expected:
# delete backups older than 7 days
find /mnt/backup/* -mtime +7 -exec rm -Rf {} ;
The problem is, every morning I get an email with an error message something like this:
find: `/mnt/backup/subfolder': No such file or directory
I am trying to create a backup script that will back up a single folder for a class i am in. I was wandering if I could get some help. If possible I would also like to know how to write a script that can encrypt that same file . I will be putting the back up in my /home/usr/Backup directory. The question I have is about where would be the typical location to auto mount this partition? Which would it be normal to go for:

I need like bi-monthly full HDD backups, and things such as that, with a nice GUI interface to add/remove systems from the backup list. I need basically something similar to CommVault or Veritas. Veritas I've used before but it has its issues, such as leaving 30GB cache files. CommVault, I have no idea how much it is, and if it supports backing up to a hard drive rather than tape.

Looks like a program to view ACPI data.
FWIW, ACPI was not installed by default and is not an "officially approved" program; has no Ubuntu Logo next to it in Synaptic.
Also, I have CONKY installed, so I have CPU and GPU data on a window, but I would like to see those on a Top or Bottom Panel.
is it possible to install programs present on one computer on another computer by transferring package files? For example, let's say I've installed Thunderbird on one Ubuntu machine. Would I be able to install thunderbird on another computer by copying some files from the first computer?

I produce a lot of work under Drupal, Wordpress and Moin. Previously I have always downloaded the software packages for these from the developers website and installed it manually. When I install it manually it is fairly easy to see where files and directories have been created and I just get on with the projects.I've just noticed that the above three packages are available in the repositories. Is it better to install from the repositories or manually with this kind of software?
The reason I ask is because a software package like Gimp just appears in my start menu so I naturally would download it from the repo. But if I download something like Wordpress I can see it is installed through synaptic but does it actually produce any new directories or files in somewhere like /var/www? I'm not sure how I would access the software once it is installed. The W3 Validator for instance, I downloaded in 8.10 but although it was showing installed there was no obvious way to access it.
