Ubuntu :: Make A Process Use Only Virtual Memory?

Oct 14, 2010

I understand that in linux virtual memory would be the same as swap and I also understand that linux only uses swap when your computer has used all your pc memory. I hope both assumption are right.Can I make a process like firefox use ONLY virtual memory/swap? No access to RAM.

General :: Force A Process To Run In Virtual Memory?

Dec 9, 2010

I am running a series of tests for an implementation of a remote pager that sends page faults to other computers in a network. Long story short, I was wondering if there is an easy way to force a process to use virtual memory as oppose to physical RAM so that I can better measure the performance of my implementation against how the system would perform while swapping to the hard drive.

OpenSUSE Install :: Virtual Memory / Resident Memory Of Server?

Feb 3, 2010

we found that if we use 'top' to show the memory usage of a server (SuSe Linux 10), we can get virtual memory usage as well as 'Resident memory' usage. For virtual mem or a particular process, it is around 1.1GB, which is large but for resident memory, it only consumes 300MB. Are there anyone who knows what the differences are? I would also like to know whether the difference (1.1GB - 300MB) = 800MB are actually available for use by other applications in the system.

Ubuntu Multimedia :: Virtual Screen Too Big For Memory?

Dec 3, 2010

I'm trying to set up an older computer for a friend that does not have one I've been using Ubuntu for a little over a year on a couple of systems, and this is the first time I have come across an issue I could not find an answer to. During the boot sequence, and right before the GUI, I'm getting a "Low Graphics Mode" warning and it tells me that the "Virtual screen too big for memory; 5120k needed, 4096 K available" then it gives me some options, and the only one that seems to lead me anywhere is the "Load Ububntu in low res mode this once" Ironically, once the Ubuntu GUI is booted up, the screen resolution is fine (1280x1024 actually - but it is an unknown monitor) This happens every time I re-boot the system and is more of an annoyance then anything else, but since its to be a gift I'd like to get rid of this error message.

I need to know, what process for what purpose is using memory in my machine. ps utility with various options seems to give not exactly what i want, i.e. if i sum all the values like RSS, VSZ or some other values related to memory usage, the sum is not equal (even approximately) to what i get using free|grep "buffers/cache".
How can i get this information? Even better, i would like to see contribution of every process, ramdisk, etc. to memory usage.

General :: Calculating Process Memory Usage?

May 13, 2010

What originally seemed like an easy thing to calculate has given me a big headache. Perhaps someone can help me with my issue. I am trying to find, in particular, how much memory certain application processes are taking. The process always is the same name, main_server, but with an argument to tell it what to do when running as a daemon.

When running the following command against all "main_server" processes, it produces a result in megabytes based on the output of the rss field in 'ps'.

Code:
CALC=0
for ea in
`ps -e -orss=,args= |
sort -b -k1,1n |
pr -TW$COLUMNS |
grep main_server |
grep -v "grep main_server" |

[Code]...

Currently I am left scratching my head. For capacity planning purposes, it would be nice to know how many more 'main_server' processes could run on the system without causing it to swap. Knowing the buffer and cache usage will go down as running processes demand more memory, I prefer to look at the free memory excluding cache and buffers. However, since 'ps' is reporting the processes are using more memory than free reports is in use without those things, I have no way to know how many more processes the system can support. I played around with different fields in 'ps', such as vsize, size, etc, but with no luck in matching up any numbers.

Ubuntu :: Memory Leaking Process Causing Hang After Login / Sort It?

Jun 10, 2011

I'm still pretty new to the linux scene but kubuntu has been a great alternative to ubuntu (unity, ugh) until now.

It only started happening since i started messing around with play on linux but i dont think their related. I dont think its a driver issue either as ive switched between proprietary and default to no avail.

Basically after i log in, it takes over 3-6 minutes getting slower and slower before finally getting back to regular speed. So after a few occurences i decided that immediately after startup i went to system monitor and sure enough;

There is a process title "akonadi_contact" that is slowly growing in memory. There are also multiple occurences of it (usually between 6 and 9). they keep growing usually to the 500000k mark in memory usage before turning gray (swap storage??) and then eventualy the end.

What is "akonadi_contact"
How do i stop this from happening.
Is this a memory leak?
