When creating their account, I have turned off the 'Connect to ethernet and wireless' option of the Advanced Settings.
However, when I log into their accounts, they still have full access to the internet through both the wireless and ethernet connections. Is this option for some other purpose?
Is there an alternate way to limit internet access for childrens' accounts in Ubuntu? (I'm used to MS Family Safety as a filter for internet access - is there an eqivalent for Ubuntu?)
I Just got the ADS VideoXpress video capture USB thing (Plug composite video and audio into it, and plug it into a computers USB port). Anyway, I've tried to install what came on the CD, with Wine, but still cant view any video. I don't need it to record from it, I just want to view the video live as it passes through. I don't even need audio, just the basic low quality video.

I have it installed on a HP mini 1010NR It worked great once I got help to figure out how to make my wifi work. Now I am trying to find the best program to use to chat and view webcams on yahoo I used gyache at first but got sick of it gliching and booting me telling me people were online when they were not. So I tried Kopete and like it but cant get the webcam to work every thing works just fine I cant send invites and cant receive images. At first I was getting an error message telling me to go to a nonexistent site for help. Now it just tells me No "webcam image received" and just strait up does not send invites. I am trying to get this to work or be directed to a better program that meets my needs and how to set it up.

I understand the installations/updates files would reside in var/cache/apt/archives. So I can copy them to be used for the next machine. But specifically how? I decided to hit the install button on the desktop, it all went smoothly. It froze during the "logging off" process, so I cold booted it. Upon restart, I was prompted again to try/install Ubuntu. (Again, I've already installed it, or so I think...) Well, what the heck. I install it again, it freezes and I let it be. I come back to find it, once again, on the try/install screen. I'm currently on the "try" function again. How do I cure my lack of an installed copy of Ubuntu?

The problem I'm having is the link ordering. Is there a way to tell the g++ linker to keep searching the libraries for unresolved references, regardless of order, instead of rearranging the order the archives are listed on the command line for a one-time-pass? My system specification:I am using is in my PC(stand alone) with the following system config..AMD Sempron(tm) processor2500+704 MB RAMASUS mother board..buntu version 9.10When I click ubuntu software center ->search any software ->select the software -> click the arrow at right corner->then click install button for me nothing happens. It was installing for one week and now it seems to be not. It gives no error message no action, but just static. Is that a paid version or i am missing something basic? I have tried to do the following

If i use my Ubuntu some times per week, there isn't any problem. But if i don't use it for a short time (a week), when i want use it again and select it on GRUB.. after the first loading screen (on Ubuntu 10.04 the purple screen with Ubuntu in white and some points under), my screen is black. The computer screen is receiving signal because the led is green and not brown/orange like when is on standby mode. On Windows i haven't any problem.
First time it happened with Ubuntu 9.10. I didn't got solution for it and i format the partition and install the 10.04. But now it happen again with 10.04. I have an ATI 5770 and i have tried drivers since 9.12 till 10.4 (last ones the best i have had) On versions before 9.10 i had no problem, but i can't confirm that, because i had other graphic card (NVIDIA 9800GT). But the 5770 didn't work well on previous version so i updated to 9.10 and after this problem, updated to 10.04.
At spanish forum, people don't know solution for this problem, they never read about a similar problem. I hope you know a solution for it, because the only one i found and work is.. format and reinstall.

Someone knows how to change the first day of the week in the calendar popup to Monday?I already looked in /usr/share/gnome-shell/js/ui/calendar.js but I didn't saw where I have to change that (my knowledge of JavaScript isn't very good yet)
View 1 Replies View RelatedI was running it portable on a 4gb usb drive via virtual box which worked great unless I used a computer that had virtualbox on it. The portable version would remove files that the original version needed. I decided to try Qemu. The problem is that the portable version only allows 1gb of space to install regardless the size of a usb drive. so the question is: Is there was a way to trim ubuntu 9.10 down to less than 1gb of disk space? If not is there another portable emulator that could be used instead? the only uses for this are for the use of evolution and opera in a linux environment.
View 3 Replies View RelatedMy issue is that I have a small VPS (512MB, 1024 burstable RAM) and I am planning on using it as an application server for say a voice server and maybe a small game server.
Coming from a Windows background, the only way I know to do this is to have a GUI + Remote Desktop and download + install the servers and run them as one normally would on a desktop PC.
But obviously this would eat up a considerable amount of my RAM.
Is there a way to download and run something like Teamspeak 3 just through the kernal alone?
If possible, is it worth the hassle (especially if I am running multiple server applications)? Or am I better off using a desktop environment + Remote Desktop?
I logged on my ibm600e with SUSE 11.1 + on Thanksgiving and auto update started and is still running today 12/02/2009. Pentium cpu is at 77 to 97% 93% memory usage plus some swap usage. Ethernet and wireless are activeily working
also separately the CD ROM is not detecting/detected except by the hardware report I sent in. My external Zip100 Is visible. as is the plug in floppy drive

With gnome-do, you can do things as quickly as possible (but no quicker). In a low-spec application, the 'do uses up ~16mb of ram even in idle mode, if I recall correctly. Are there any lighter alternatives to gnome-do? It's so useful - but I feel like its functionality could be even snappier.

I cannot get the monthly view to start the week on Sunday. The settings seem right but they don't stick. Restarting Evolution always defaults to a week start on Monday even though the defaults display Sunday. I've viewed the default settings the following two ways:
Within Evolution... Edit > Preferences > Calendar and Tasks > week starts on "Sunday"
GNOME Configuration editor.../apps/evolution/calendar/display/week_start_day = 0 (Sunday)
My manager has asked me to look at memory drop on system while I was doing test on Linux machine. there is a big dip in memory graph produced by another tool. I do not know which processes were responsible for those memory dips. Is there any way I can find memory utilization of process during last week?
