Ubuntu won't let me use the sudo command in terminal. If I try, sudo: must be setuid root pops up. Also, if I try any tasks that require permission, the authentication box pops up and then disappears within one second.

Running 10.04. For some reason, starting today, I have no internet connection unless I run this command in terminal - sudo dhclient eth0. I have a hard wired ethernet connection on a Desktop PC with a static IP address (there are a number of devices in the house) and it has been running 100% for months and months. Why suddenly do I have to enter this command to get connection? When I switch on I get a connection in that when I click on the Top Panel icon and right click Connection Information it tells me I have an active connection to my router on the normal IP address. I cannot ping the router and Firefox says Server not found. After sudo dhclient eth0 everything works - what has happened since yesterday evening and this morning to stop what has been 100% for months?

I am a rookie. Yesterday, I intended to install a dictionary with the command sudo apt-get install dict-xdict, but it turned out to fail with the error. Then, I quited with Ctrl+ c, and I did not care much till today because when I want install something else today, the error keeps coming out. Therefore, I think I would better remove dict-xdict first, so I use sudo apt-get remove dict-xdict, but the error still appears:
[Code]...
I have already tries sudo apt-get -f install dict-xdict and it doesn't work out. I am hoping to install some other applications now, but I have not idea what I could do to fix this problem or just circumvent it

I recently switched back to ubuntu after a year of gaming on w7, however I think that this time I'm going to stick to ubuntu, if she doesnt screw me like she has the previous times. Anyways, I was just wondering what media players you guys favor, and why? (maybe there doesn't have to be a reason xD), and I tried to install beep media player with:
sudo aptitude install beep-media-player
And the return is: sudo: aptitude: command not found

I am new to fedora (been using debian based distro's for the longest time). With the new release I decided to give FC13 (The kde 64 bit spin) a try. I told it to wipe my entire hdd and encrypt the partitions. The partition manager made a few LVM partitions which I assume are encrypted.
The problem I am having is that if I attempt to use an application that would normally need root access to run, I am not prompted to enter my root password. Instead, I am required to logout and log back in as root. Is there a way to make it so that FC13 will prompt me to enter in my root password so I do not need to log in and out? Or is there something Different I should have done during the install process? Also, what is the terminal equivalent of "sudo" in fedora, or is it still sudo/KDEsudo
I also have not used SE Linux before. Do I need to manually enforce the permissions for my applications and generate my own profiles for it, or is that done automatically?

I don't know if it's possible but GIMP is able to receive command line arguments, so why not? Basically, I want to create a batch (action, macro or what it may be called) and then set up a cron job which will run every hour. So, it would be something like "If an image is in X folder, then resize, watermark & move it to Y folder".

If you had Gimp 2.6 (with gimp-plugin-registry installed) and installed Gimp 2.7 to try its new goodies, but Layer Effects are not showing, and when executing "gimp" from console you get these *nasty* errors:
Code:
This is a development version of GIMP. Debug messages may appear here.
gimp-user-install: migrating from /home/user/.gimp-2.6
Traceback (most recent call last):
File "/usr/lib/gimp/2.0/plug-ins/layerfx.py", line 23, in <module>
import gimp, gimpplugin, math
ImportError: No module named gimp .....
If you haven't install the 2.7 version yet. Before upgrading, backup "python" directory and then just restore it after installing 2.7.

Some of you may have had with issues after installing GIMP on Lucid Lynx 10.04. Which may be directly related to "gimp-help-en", which could prevent you from installing other applications and preforming system tasks. If so, use this method to fix it.
Process: (Terminal > $ sudo apt-get install gimp)
1. After installing Gimp go to the terminal:
2. Then load up the language support application:
3. Then it will ask you to install the "gimp-help-en", confirm it.
4. Fix'd
I think this issue is directly linked to a systems with multiple languages, but I haven't been able to test this theory out yet.

I'm having trouble signing in using the sudo in the terminal.
I enter in the line: sudo abc (username = abc)
I get the line returned: [sudo] password for abc:
If I enter my normal login pw i get the message:
abc is not in the sudoers file. This incident will be reported.
If I enter the root pw I get the message: Sorry, try again.
I've just set up the debian OS and am trying to learn the linux way but it's a bit frustrating. so when I set up the system originally It had me make two passwords one for root and one for my user acct. So how do I get the sudo terminal to work?

so the safest way to go about this is to assume I know nothing. I mean, I have a rough Idea of what a kernel is, no idea what a shell is, etc. I do consider myself computer savvy, but know NOTHING about linux and thats why I'm Diving in, hopefully not too much, this is just to give you an idea of what we're working with here.
After several install attempts I kept getting a blank screen. Whether it be black, white, or the default gnome desktop (without any icons, and simple things like ctrl+alt+backspace just doesn't work, or anything else for that matter) I was ending up with a blank screen. Driver for moniter....maybe....but I did succesfully install it once, and it worked like a charm...shutdown properly, and the next day after work...Boom, same thing after startup.today I started from scratch and re-installed....samething, until I hit the power button, went from the dvd(iso) and did a fail safe, now my resolution is much better than it was the first time..Actual questions.....what did I do to fix it when failsafe never worked before?
Is there a way to save these settings, so I don't run into the problem again, because I don't even want to turn of my computer at this point? If i'm trying to dive in and learn the command line actions, is there any substancial difference between gnome terminal or hitting "c" to bring up the command line?
