Ubuntu :: How To Keep Cpu Usage Low
Jan 8, 2010
are there any way/method or program to keep cpu usage low? like only allow a certain program to use a certain amount of cpu usage (like 30%)
if so my laptop might stay cool all time (thought the waiting time will be up)
i need that method because i am not in hurry and dont want/need to burn my laptop.

I was trying to get the status of memory usage and disk usage using sigar in windows and ubuntu. done this in windows by just copying the sigar library into jdk library. But i was unable to do so in ubuntu. I've copied the library to java-6-sun library but still can't run the program.

I'm running into a problem where my system is running out of disk space on the root partition, but I can't figure out where the runaway usage is. I've had a stable system for a couple of years now, and it just ran out of space. I cleaned some files up to get the system workable again, but can't find the big usage area, and I'm getting conflicting results. For example, when I do a df it says I'm using 44GB out of 58 GB:
Code:
[root@Zion ~]# df -h
Filesystem Size Used Avail Use% Mounted on
[code]....

I've come across a really strange issue with one of my RHEL servers. The "free" command shows that 7019 MB of memory are actually in use by my system, but when summing up the actual usage (or even virtual usage like the example below) it doesn't add up - the sum is far less than what is reported by "free":
Code:
[root@server1 ~]# free -m
total used free shared buffers cached
Mem: 12011 7946 4065 0 4 23
-/+ buffers/cache: 7919 4092

I am running 10.10 on a netbook (1.6Ghz Atom N270, 2GB RAM). Because it has limited resources, I am currently testing to see which apps I want to use.
Which should take more priority -- an application that uses less RAM or an application that uses less CPU?

I decided to upgrade my laptop from Ubuntu 9.10 to 10.04. Instead of using the upgrade feature, I backed up the important stuff and just did a clean install of 10.04. Issue 1: I was experiencing some performance issues with 10.04. I was getting 100% cpu usage reported by System Monitor. The 100% cpu usage, strangely enough, switched from CPU0 to CPU1, and back again sometimes. I don't know if there was a pattern to it. I also noticed video lag when using Super+E (or Window+E) to switch between desktops. This was running incredibly smooth on this laptop when I was using 9.10. I know it's just a minor issue, but the video in the laptop is more than powerful enough to handle it, and I'm worried about the performance having a bottleneck of some kind.
Issue 2: Trying to fix issue 1, I was googling around to find a solution. I found a thread on another site that suggested running a couple terminal commands to do something with Pulseaudio, I think. I wasn't familiar with the commands, as my Linux knowledge doesn't stray far from my generic list of fixes for things I've encountered. Here are the commands I ran:
sudo add-apt-repository ppa:ubuntu-audio-dev/ppa
sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get dist-upgrade
There may have been a couple other steps, however I cannot find the page anymore My sound still works, but I cannot control the volume with the icon in the system tray anymore. I had to download the Alsa Gui volume control to adjust the volume. My hopes for this thread: I would like to first know if anyone possibly understands what I may have done with Issue 2 (the sound issue)
And with Issue 1, have there been any reported performance bugs? 10.04 seems to run fine on my desktop, super smooth (including Window+E desktop switching). EDIT: I forgot to mention that the processes tab in System Monitor does not show any applications that are coming anywhere near the 100% cpu usage that the Resources tab is reporting.

Everytime CPU reaches around 85% of maximum it shuts down due to overheating. What I want to do is be able to throttle the cpu to 75% so it never goes above that. I don't want to just throttle individual programs which I think is what CPULimit does right? The fans are failing but I can't afford to get fixed. I just want to use it for email and web browsing usually.
I have cleaned dust out, use in a well ventilated room, use a cooling stand etc but still when CPU gets to approx 85% then whala it shuts itself down. Have been using with XP but just switched to Ubuntu and have only had it shut down once so far.

I'm running desktop machine with with a core2 duo E6400 with 2GB RAM. I have completed a fresh install of Ubuntu 9.10 (fully updated). I have 10GB root, 2GB swap, 10GB home and 80GB data parititons.
I log in to main administrator account (first boot), create a new user (desktop) account and then use the switch user to log into the desktop account (so logged in to two accounts at the same time).
Whilst logged into the desktop account the CPU usage as seen in system monitor shows the two CPU's alternating at around 100% and the system slows down greatly.

I recently upgraded two of my computers from 9.4 to 9.10. They are: HP Pavilion a510n (Desktop) Gateway T-1620 (Laptop)
Both are having the same problem. They are running at constant 100% CPU usage. when I look into the task manager there is no apparent cause. all active processes add up to at most 25%. On the desktop its just noisy cause the fan is always running at full blast. on the laptop however, it causes it to auto shutdown after 15 minutes or so due to overheating.
Im concerned that this is going to cause long term damage to my machines.

quite often my computer will slow down, and all the cpu indicators will show 100%. However, when I open System Monitor to see what is using all the CPU, it doesn't show anything much at all. I have attached a screenshot to show what I mean. CPU is running at 91% load, however, I make the total 35% in system monitor.

As the thread states, I wonder why my RAM usage is about 56% without any application running. It turns to 58% while opening Firefox (with only one Tab/Page opened) and typing this post. Is there something wrong?

I have recently upgraded from Kubuntu 9.10 to 10.04. I am having trouble with CPU usage by the X server. When running KDE programs (for example Kontact and Amarok) my computer is becoming very sluggish. This seems to be because X is using 90-100% of the CPU constantly when there are any changes to the application (any sort of redraw, even the mouse moving across the screen). I don't experience this with other applications (I am currently writing this from Chromium with no issues at all). Below is all the relevant information I can think to include.
INSTALL PROCESS: Fresh install from Ubuntu 10.04 LiveCD. My /home direrctory is on a separate partition so that has remained unchanged from 9.10. After installing Ubuntu, I installed the kubuntu-desktop package to install kdm and the KDE desktop.
The only real change from my last install is that /var is now also a separate partition (in a bid to save my MySQL data should I have to reinstall again) but it is on the same hard drive as my root partition and so shouldn't be causing any performance issues.
MY X SETUP: Three screen setup using onboard and PCI graphics cards. This worked perfectly before and, after reconfiguring X using nvidia-xconfig works almost as well again. Except that one of my monitors autodetects at 1280x1024 where before it was a higher (and widescreen) resolution.
The issue only presents itself when KDE application screens are visible and disappears when they are hidden (either minimised or closed) As far as Ican tell it could be an X, Qt or KDE issue. But I am not sure what versions of these will have been changed in the upgrade.

Interested to find out if this is normal or not. I am running a Intel Core 2 Duo processor and the system monitor keeps showing one of the cores at 100%, and the other fluxuating normally. Is this normal or a bug with the system monitor. I am running Compiz, but that is pennies to the comp. It seems that about every 1.5 minutes the cores "swap" the 100% usage, but it always ends up with one core at 100% and the other core doing normal stuff.

I would like to know if I can update a live USB version of 10.04I am, unofficially, running ubuntu 10.04 live USB version from a partition on my 250GB USB HDD at work. All the apps I use are web bassed except for zeacom and groupwise which I run from a virtual machine I created using virtualbox ose, this machine is one the network running AD and novel and also MS office and uniflow printing
Everything at the moment is running quite well: I tried this a while ago (9.04 or earlier) but I tried enabling update manager and this killed the boot for my live USB and I don't what to risk toying with a system that is running well but I also want to be up to date.

I need to rip my DVDs, an operation which is heavy on the CPU, on my laptop. This makes the temperature rise very quickly, even if the process has very high nice value, and my laptop was already shut off automatically once. Probably there is some bug, since the temperature if often hotter than optimal, but this is really too much (plus these days my room is hot too).
I don't want to ruin anything, so I'd like to put some kind of limit on the CPU usage. Say I don't want any of the two CPUs to go over 70% (a moment ago they were both at 100%, I have paused the process). Is there a way ti d0 this?

My problem seems to be very simple, it's high memory usage. I occasionally will use movie player to watch a few shows and I use firefox as well. My memory usage starts out real small about 500 mb but after using firefox lightly and movie player it jumps to almost 2 gigs and this is after they've been closed what gives? I've attached an image so you can see what I'm talking about.

I don't understand why I have a 800MB usage at startup. I didn't add any programs to start at startup. I do though have 10 primary partitions that are auto mounted at startup but it shouldn't use up so much, I have 2GB total RAM.
At startup nautilus uses ~400MB of virtual memory in the "system monitor"
Also which is RAM and which is SWAP in resources in system monitor: Virtual Memory && Memory?
-i figure vm is ram but thats not possible sometimes...it exceeds 2GB

I've been having some problems with Lucid; all my applications seem to be hogging memory like no tomorrow. Within about 15 minutes from booting the system, processes like Google Chrome, Nautilus, Python, Pidgin all start to take seemingly too large amounts of memory.
Chrome is the worst one, easily shooting over 200-300MB of my 2GB's of RAM. I would have reported this as a bug in Chrome itself, but my other applications seem to share the problem to some extent. Also: My colleague has identical hardware and identical versions of Ubuntu / Chrome, while he has no memory problems whatsoever.Currently I am running Chrome, Geany, Pidgin, Thunderbird and FileZilla. For this and itself, Ubuntu now consumes 1.8GB of RAM (that's including 500MB cached).

I have a 64-bit computer and needed to download 10.04 again and now notice the following:64-bit - Not recommended for daily desktop usage. This worries me so I would like to ask a couple of questions here if I may.
QUESTION ONE
What version, on a 64-bit machine, should I download for use every day and all day?
QUESTION TWO
If the answer to Question One is, "use the 32-bit version", and I have 8GB of memory, I can only use 3.4GB with 32-bit so would the other memory be available to use if I downloaded vbox and used a second operating system?
