View 2 RepliesWith the find command it is easy to find files that have been modified or accessed within a given period. When a file is created, the acesss time is the same as the modify time. But as soon it is accessed (read), the access time changes, but the modify time does not. I need to find files that been accessed at all, ie. files which have access time newer than modify time. How do I do that?

Due to this I actually download every clip to a temp folder and play the file while it's being downloaded with mplayer. This works really nice. Flash is not to play a video. Does there exist a plugin for this for any browser? I tried google, but I can't find the right words to search for. Edit: I did find a plugin for playing wmp things, that is not what I'm asking for!

View 4 Replies View RelatedI have been using Linux for quite a while and have gotten pretty good at it, but recently I started using Backtrack in a VM and realized I have no idea what it is based on. Then I got to thinking I have no idea what that even means. For example, OSX is based on Darwin right, but what does that mean? Ubuntu is another that is based on Debian, but I don't know what that means.
The reason I'm asking is because in order to get my screen resolution and networking right in Backtrack I need to know what it is based on so I can download the proper packages to install the VirtualBox guest additions, and I have no idea. Is there a way to get this information from the operating system? Maybe uname -a is giving me the info and I just don't know where to look in the output?
Is there any easy way (i.e. command or file to view) to find out what distribution I am running? I know that my /etc/apt/sources.list has entries for stable, testing and unstable but I hear that (as of the 30th) "stable" has become Sarge. So if I performed an apt-get update then an apt-get dist-upgrade yesterday should I assume that I am now running Sarge?

I found that each Linux has a kernel "vmlinuz" and a initrd "initrd.gz" no matter how you boot the distro it uses these to files. I have CrunchBang Installed on my laptop I put a copy of the ubuntu live disk in the location
/home/user-pc/ubuntu/
I added a new boot option for grub It looks like this
Title Ubuntu
kernel /home/user-pc/ubuntu/casper/vmlinuz
initrd /home/user-pc/ubuntu/casper/initrd.gz
This boots like a normal cd only problem is while its booting it tells me it cant find the file System. This happened for every single Linux distro I tried to boot. Is there something I am missing here is there a way to tell the boot peramiter where the file system is I think what it means by file system is the "filesystem.squashfs" file.
I have 2 questions
1. Is there anyway to tell the grub loader that this is the file system. To make the live CD boot properly.
2. How do CD's work is it not the same?

I am trying to set up a minecraft server, but I have encountered problems. I have been using Ubuntu Server, but I can't get everything to work just right. I was wondering if I just needed to find a new distro that doesn't take up much resources and can run a java applet and sync with dropbox.( I already have code to sync that up).

I loaded a distro (which does not seem relevant) onto my laptop and used it for a while. Applications did whatever they do creating and saving files. I know that I have images and documents and videos and music and such on the laptop among other non-distro data files. Is there a simple (straightforward) way to identify which files on disk are NOT part of the installed distro? I know how to use find. I know that find lets me locate files based on some date-time-stamp. I know, too, that I can use any selected file as a benchmark date-time instead of some specific command line string.

View 5 Replies View RelatedIt sounds weird but on Linux I can't find a browser that allows to set a download speed limit. I found an extension for Firefox but it works only on Windows. I know the existence of download managers like d4x, wget, jdownloader, etc... but some downloads can only be done by browser. I know trickle too but if I want to change the speed limit I have to 'restart' the command (interrupting the current download). Then I didn't find an extension for Chromium.

I can manually ping Stanford ok,

View 4 Replies View RelatedI have a very bad attempt at hashing the components of an tcp session to assign/locate the session in a hash table bucket. I am pretty sure that it has a very high collision rate and when there are a very large number of tcp sessions my application is having to search a long linked list to find the session within the bucket.
All the hashing functions I have found take a single string input where I need to input several integers and hash them into a single result. My guess is that any real hashing function is going to produce better results than what I am currently doing.

I have a linux box set up as a multi-purpose server for my home with three Windows client PC's. The linux box is based on a slightly modified Slackware 9.0 distribution using Linux 2.4.20 and an unfortinately old, slow AMD processor with a miserable 512Kb RAM. The linux box serves the CIFS file system to the Windows boxes, runs the SQUID HTTP proxy, the Apache web server, a print server, does masquerading, mail serving and a very effective firewall using iptables.
This system, although slow, has run perfectly for several years.Let me say that again - This system works perfectly.I had decided that now is the time to upgrade the hardware, so I bought a Gigabyte LGA775 motherboard which has two 1Gb network interfaces on it, an ASUS 256Mb PCI-E display card, 2Gb of DDR3 RAM, an Intel Core2-Quad processor and a bunch of 500Gb SATA drives to set up a RAID5 array (but I intend that the system boot off one of several 40Gb PATA drives I have).I set up the processor, motherboard, display card, RAM, a SATA DVD Drive and a 40Gb PATA hard disk in a "breadboard" layout and installed distro 13.1, being careful to set up the static IP for the local network, dhcpcd to get an IP address from the cable modem (my internet connection) and to enable ip_forward in the network configuration.
Then I installed a script invoked by /etc/rc.d/rc.local which installed all the SAME iptables rules as my old Linux box. There was one minor glitch when I had to change 8 occurrences of "-d ! $LOCAL_NET to" "! --destination $LOCAL_NET" but that was no problem. I also set up /etc/resolv.conf, /etc/hosts , the BIND server files etc. etc. exactly as in the old box.
I am able to ping mirror.aarnet.edu.au (this is at the heart of Australia's internet hub network - if it's down the whole bloody thing is down) and have the system find the correct IP from the designated nameservers and contact that server with a return trip time of 35ms. I am able to run a telnet session from one of the Windows boxes and edit files on the Linux server. So both network interfaces work and I've got them the right way around.I am able to run FTP on one of the Windows boxes and connect through to mirror.aarnet.edu.au, although it seems to hang when I try a DIR (but then so does the old linux system).
My server is Ubuntu 10.04 which is used to test an Open ERP system.
However, once I setup everything and trying to be access from other workstations, it doesn't work!
Also, the server cannot found any Windows PCs in the network.
Does anyone know how to resolve this problem?
