View 3 RepliesI would like to know the exact difference between 32 bit Linux OS and 64 bit Linux OS. Can some one post me the material or overview on this.
View 1 Replies View RelatedNow, I'm ready to run my program, and my code is based on 32bit version. So I run the program on Ubuntu 9.10 32bit. And I got running time for 48s. But that's a bit slower than I expected; the program has bunch of File I/O processing but the result(48s) just doesn't make sense compared to given initial data set. So I just run the same program and same initial data set on Ubuntu 9.10 64bit ver. Then, bang!! it took 1.4s to finish the job.
Do you have any thoughts what kind of fact might make this significant difference? The differences b/w those two OS are "32 vs 64" and 32bit version has Java SDK, Eclipse, Apache2, Mysql, PHP, CGI, and python. We-server service is running but because I'm not really running web server. Did the result come from these background programs?
-- I tested it on the both OS in the same situation as possible as I can.
(reboot->test)
-- BTW 64bit one doesn't have those programs. I just installed on my external hard drive, so it's literary PURE one. (32bit one also in the same HDD)
-- I run these Ubuntus on VMware
I have a system with a missing or damaged kernel and I need to reinstall some software to fix it (see this thread for reference removed xen and kernel is gone). I feel fairly certain I can fix my system with the info in that thread however I don't know if this was a 32bit or 64bit system. How can I tell after using the dvd and linux rescue or does it even matter?

Can anyone get the website below to work correctly with Firefox 3.5 and F11 64bit?[URL]...All I see is the background scrolling slowly and jerkily, none of the buttons at the bottom work. Reboot into Windows 7 and IE8: the same site is fast, smooth, the buttons work and the product details appear correctly in the centre of the screen.
I've tried disabling all adblock /pop up block options, ensured all javascript options are enabled and no change. Could this be a problem with the 64 bit flash player (installed from leigh's sticky thread) or a problem with OpenJDK?

Anyone successfully installed AIR and iPlayer on F11?
I've switched to 32 bit Adobe flash, tried Autoten for AIR and Dangermouse's advice for iPlayer: url.html but it's not working, and trying to install AIR from url results in an endless busy downloading graphic .
I assume my problem is a lack of required packages, though I searched the repositories using YUM extender for the packages listed here: url.html and can't see them either as installed or available.
I want to install IBM Lotus Symphony on my 64 bit system, but yum only finds 32 bit version.

I removed iptstate.x86_64, again run yum update, and than, ibnetfilter_conntrack got installed. I tried to install iptstate.x86_64 again, but i get Quote:

I have Intel Pentium Dual Core E2180 / 2 GHz processor. i just upgraded my system with 4 memory sticks i.e. 7GB of RAM due to my requirements. Now the issue that i am facing is that my 32bit fedora system does not showing and suppoting more than 3.XX gigs of RAM when i consult "/proc/meminfo", "free -m" and "top". Now i have done two thing, first i have installed a PAE version of kernel. In result of this my system become two slow with the following error at startup. View 2 Replies View RelatedI've typed 'l' instead of 'ls' in the terminal by mistake a couple of times, and it seems to do pretty much - but not exactly - the same as 'ls' ('l' appends *, @ etc at the end of filenames which seem to indicate permissions and/or links).
I can't find any documentation on 'l'. 'l --help' gives exactly the same output as 'ls --help'. 'which l' gives nothing. There are no files in my filesystem called only 'l' either - just a couple of unrelated folders.
So what's the difference between l and ls?
I have two interfaces, Gnome and KDE. So sometimes I am asked to chose between the 2 display manager gdm (Gnome) or kdm (KDE). I've never noticed any difference. When I have problems with one I have problems with the other, and usually they both seem to function equally well. If you have ever been in a situation where one was better than the other could you please tell me about it? My question is related to troubleshooting a dual-monitor setting but this is another thread, here I'm just asking because I wish to learn a bit more about displays in general.

What is the difference between 0750 and 750? Not the specific numbers but the format of them. I know the difference between 750, 755, 777, 600, etc, but is there a functional difference between using a preceding zero and not using one?

View 2 Replies View RelatedHow on Earth can you tell the difference between a packaging bug and a bug in the software? I ask because Kubuntu.org says - on it's page for upgrading to KDE 4.5:
Quote:
Bugs in packaging should be reported to kubuntu-ppa on Launchpad. Bugs in the software to KDE.
Now I don't know where to file *any* bug!
what is difference in file in /usr/bin and /bin
