Apparently, there are two ways to make a menu item: create a .desktop file for it in the /usr/share/applications/ directory, or add an entry for it in the /etc/xdg/xfce4/desktop/menu.xml file. Is the choice just a matter of preference, or do these two approaches provide different functionality?

I tried the how-to at he xfce site, but it refers to ~/.config/menus, but I do not have that and I can find none of the .desktop files anywhere in my home directory.So, where the heck are the files I need to modify?
View 3 Replies View RelatedI realized that my understanding of UUIDs in Linux to specifying hard disk partitions may be erroneous.
The proverbial wisdom is that one should not use hard-coded device specifications in fstab and in the boot menu.lst, such as /dev/sda1 etc. The reason normally given is that if hard disk order changes or the order of partitions change, then the entries will be incorrect since they are hardcoded to partitions following a specific order.
So my understanding was that using hard disk labels, in the form of LABEL=xxxx, or UUIDs in the form of UUID=some-uuid, would prevent these problems when disk order or partition order changed.
I decided to avoid the use of LABEL in case I wanted to change the LABEL on a partition to make the names of partitions more easily identifiable. I then thought that UUID was ideal since it never changed for a partition no matter even if I moved that partition to another drive or added another hard drive and thus changes the order of hard drives on my computer. I essentially thought that once UUID was determined for a partition, it never changed but was somehow part of the partition in the hardware of my computer.
Then I became curious of how a UUID was determined. I did this because I often make backups of partitions on external SATA drives and wanted to make sure that somehow the backup would not duplicate whatever Linux considers the UUID of a partition and present a Linux distribution with two UUIDS which are somehow the same and therefore confuse the Linux distribution to the point that I could not use it. I am aware that UUID means a unique id, but I wanted to make sure I understand how that unique id is determined in Linux. This is especially true since the tool I use to make backups of an entire partition is a Windows application, and not a Linux application, and I wanted to make sure that the backup partition UUID would not duplicate that of an existing partition.
In my very brief research in how a UUID is generated under Linux it appears that it is not something that is part of the hardware of the partition itself but rather a number generated by some parameters of the partition, one of which is the partition order.
If it is, it means to me that if I move a partition from one place to another, even on the same hard drive, or to another hard drive, a Linux distribution will no longer find the partition based on the UUID. In that case it seems as if the UUID is subject to the same weakness as the device specification in fstab and menu.lst in that the order of a partition or the placement of a partition on a particular hard drive will cause the designation to no longer refer to the same partition. In which case it appears to me that only the LABEL parameter is not subject to this weakness and as long as I keep distinct labels for all partitions on my hard drive I could theoretically move them around at will and a Linux distribution will find them correctly. I am aware of course that my computer must always find the boot partition to be able to boot a Linux distribution, so moving Linux parttions where I want them is subject to the ability of my computer to find them from the MBR of my hard drives. But in the main it now appears to me that the best way to insure that moving partitions does not keep a Linux distribution from botting correctly is to use LABEL, and not UUID, in fstab and menu.lst, and of course to make sure that if I decide to change the LABEL of a partition that I must change its entry in fstab and possibly menu.lst before rebooting that distribution.
If I have been wrong in my latest surmises I would appreciate being corrected, as the information I found on UUIDs and how they are generated may not be correct. Also if there is more exact information on exactly how partition UUIDs are generated in Linux I would appreciating anyone pointing it out to me.
I've noticed something strange in the behavior of how Ubuntu server obtains it's IP address versus Ubuntu desktop and other versions of linux and Windows. When Ubuntu desktop obtains an IP address from my router that address is retained from one bootup to the next, same behavior as Windows, SuSE, and pretty much any other OS. Ubuntu server on the other hand grabs a different IP address everytime it boots. At first I guessed it was a difference in /etc/dhcp3/dhclient.conf so I replaced it with the dhclient.conf from Ubuntu desktop but no dice, it still grabs a new address every time.
In /etc/network/interfaces Ubuntu server defines the loopback interface and primary network interface, just as it should but Ubuntu desktop does not define the network interface, only the loopback interface. I'm guessing something else controls does this. Desktop appears to be storing previous IP lease information in /var/lib/dhcp3/dhclient.eth0.leases but server doesn't, /var/lib/dhcp3/dhclient.leases is always empty and there's no other files in /var/lib/dhcp3/.
Apparently something isn't writing old lease info there. Without setting a static IP address, how can Ubuntu server be configured to retain the same IP address between boots like Ubuntu desktop?I'm using Ubuntu server 8.04LTS, Ubuntu desktop 9.10 & 9.04, SuSE 11.0, Linux Mint, Windows XP, pfSense 1.2.2 as router.
I have Ubuntu 9.10 installed on an old Gateway desktop. It is running a system called Jira using a Tomcat web server, so 99% of the time access is thorugh the web browser. For the rest of the time I access it remotely using TightVNC. This works great so far but the system will not boot if I remove the screen (which I need to do since it is in the way). My question is this...
a. If I uninstall and reinstall using Ubuntu Server edition (32-bit) will the system boot without the screen?
b. Assuming the above will work - can I still access the machine directly using TightVNC (I presume not since that needs the graphics setup). If not, how do I connect to the machine remotely?

When I tried to copy my user files from a saved source, they now appear on the desktop in mass. What I expect is that only files in the Desktop directory show on the desktop, instead all files in the home directory show on the desktop, less the dot files. I can not figure out how the system controls what files show up on the desktop. Comparing the problem user to a working user failed to disclose the difference.

I installed 11.04 and came to notice that the icons for my bookmarks in the places menu on the desktop are sometimes present and other times they are not, I have no idea what is causing this but it is from a fresh install all i have done is update. it's a minor issue but small things like this tend to annoy me oh and this is in the default unity session

After playing with it for a while I wanted to change back but found that right clicking on the desktop no longer launches the usual menu. If I change to "netbook form" rather than desktop, the menu is there, but even rebooting has not fixed the problem.

Its been doing it for a few weeks. I install lots of eye candy/themes etc and have Avant, docky and cario-dock and think it be may some eye candy I installed, not sure. I am running kubuntu 10.04 (32 bit) and have installed the latest version of the Opera 10.53 beta.
My problem is that I cannot change the icon for Opera in the Kickoff menu or on the desktop. I tried right clicking on the Kickoff Application Launcher widget on the panel and choosing Menu Editor; Navigated to Opera and changed the icon from the default KDE icon (opera) to the new styled Opera icon (opera-browser), but it doesn't change.

However, I'm unable to change from one desktop to another - from what I've read, there's meant to be a drop-down menu at the login page allowing you to select the desktop but I don't have one.
