View 9 Repliesso sorry about this seemingly silly cron question. I know a lot are asked, and are usually just environment related.Anyway, I wrote a very simple PHP script to mount my external drive to a specific location as soon as it's switched on.The script works great when run.What's strange, is that it runs in cron and generates a log file, but for someone reason doesn't mount the drive when cron runs itI added in the full path to EVERYTHING in the script, and I'm calling it with the full path from crontab, but it doesn't mount my drive when run from cron.I've tried running the individual commands on the cmd, and it all works.
View 9 Replies View RelatedI am adding the following scripts to cron via crontab -e (as user)
Quote:
The first one is to record tv. I've added dev/null 2>&1 at the end. No too clear why but without it, it records only a few seconds.
The second script is (as you should already noticed) to turn off my computer at 6:25 am. It doesn't work (with or without dev/null 2>&1). I am surely forgetting something important. Could you please tell me what is it?
I'm trying to add several cron jobs. I have a folder (/etc/cron.myapp) with several subfolders in it (30minute, 3minute, daily, hourly). Each of these folders contains a script.Runnng/usr/bin/run-parts /etc/cron.myapp/3minute/will execute the contents of that folder.I have tried adding the following entries to /etc/crontab with no luck, and nothing is showing up in /var/log/cron
*/3 * * * * /usr/bin/run-parts /etc/cron.myapp/3minute/
*/3 * * * * /usr/bin/run-parts /etc/cron.myapp/3minute
*/3 * * * * root /usr/bin/run-parts /etc/cron.myapp/3minute/

I own a CentOS 5 VPS. I typed crontab -e, and then I added the following line to automatically have my server backup mysql
0 * * * * mysqldump -u root -p password --all-databases | gzip > /home/dbbackup/database_`date '+%m-%d-%Y_%H'`.sql.gz
When I go in and look, it doesn't place any files in /home/dbbackup. When I run
mysqldump -u root -p password --all-databases | gzip > /home/dbbackup/database_`date '+%m-%d-%Y_%H'`.sql.gz
I wanted to use cron to play a media file at a certain time (i.e. use it as an alarm clock). However it seems to do nothing. The contents of my crontab is:
SHELL=/bin/bash
PATH=/sbin:/bin:/usr/sbin:/usr/bin
MAILTO=root
HOME=/
# For details see man 4 crontabs
# Example of job definition:
# .---------------- minute (0 - 59)
# | .------------- hour (0 - 23)
# | | .---------- day of month (1 - 31)
# | | | .------- month (1 - 12) OR jan,feb,mar,apr ...

Is my vixie-cron broken? i have "0-59 * * * * root /usr/sbin/logrotate /etc/logrotate.conf" but it is not running in /etc/cron.d.
Code:
My root Vixie cron crontab is set to perform a system snapshot via fsarchiver: 0 0 * * * fsarchiver savefs -o -A /backups/p30_root.fsa /dev/sda2 /dev/sda3 The command itself works fine, generating about a 7G snapshot of my Suse server. I then wish to rsync this to a NAS I have located in another building: 0 3 * * * rsync -av -e ssh --delete /backups/ root{at address}:/DataVolume/os_backups/
(yes, I'm rsyncing as root. I absolutely loathe it, but I got thrown into an quasi-SA position with a ridiculous to-do list and no time to do it. I'm having to make things just work and then go back and try to improve them/learn how. I couldn't make it work in a non-root way quick enough, so for now I'm having to cron rsync jobs as root because of all the differing file permissions on this samba/MySql server. I set the NAS to only accepts ssh from the server IP, and we're behind a campus firewall... It's serious trial by fire.) The crontab also has rsync commands for the samba areas, our specialized chemistry software and affiliated MySQL databases............
i am trying to daemonize my (java) program on ubuntu. For that end i created a script based on /etc/init.d/skeleton script which obviously uses start-stop-daemon.
But I cannot make the process (java program) run on the background. it keeps running in the same terminal i start my daemon script. Trying --background option for start-stop-daemon does not help.
Still trying to get my openVPN running.I can get the daemon running from terminal but nothing is configured. I copied my config file over from Windoze partition. My openVPN works flawlessly on both my windoze boxes.
Following this but came to another dead end when Im instructed to: Next, edit /etc/openvpn/easy-rsa/vars adjusting the following to your environment:
export KEY_COUNTRY="US"
export KEY_PROVINCE="NC"
export KEY_CITY="Winston-Salem"
export KEY_ORG="Example Company"
export KEY_EMAIL="steve@example.com"
I cant edit that,I tried but its a 'read only'. Are these instructions designed for long time users?
I am trying to use my Apple Remote Controller that came with my iMac 4.1. I did some research and on the Ubuntu site it said that its possible with a application called Infrared Remote Controller. It detected from the hardrive which version I had etc but than a error message appeared on the bottom saying:
Warning: Remote control daemon not running.
How can I activate this? I included a screenshot!
I wrote a shell script and tried to execute it in separate terminal using command 'gnome-terminal -e <script>'. When executing first time, it went fine.From second time, I am getting error 'There is error creating child process for this terminal' repeatedly.
View 5 Replies View RelatedI have a php file that I need to execute via a cronjob. This file should be run by the www-data user as its a file in my /var/www/project folder. When I run this file under root (php -f cron.php) everything works perfectly, but I want it to run under the www-data to be safe. Before I run it vai crontab I tried it via command line as the www-data user and I receive errors:
Fatal Error: Allowed memory size of 8388608 bytes expired (tried to allocate 232 bytes).
But when I run it as the root user I get no errors and everything works correctly. The file cron.php is used to process automated tasks in my CRM. So I don't really want to have the root user running a crontab every few minutes for this.
Must the www-data user be given more permissions? I am using Ubuntu 6.06LTS
PHP - 5.1.2
Apache - 2.0.55
MySQL - 5.0.22
I'm trying to modify an existing user so that any files they create can be at least read (although writing and execution would be nice) by any other user. The reason is because I need the daemon running my Apache server to be able to access files created by a daemon running under this user, files which will be created and accessed in real-time.

This source code folder has to be copied into a particular directory structure in the linux system at the other end. After copying the file into the appropriate folder in the linux server i have to instruct the linux machine to make(using the make file that is there with the c files) this source code from the windows machine. Does anyone have any idea in regard to how this can be implemented?? i am trying to have a gui client that has the above mentioned options(copying and inserting the c files into the appropriate directory and then for making the files and getting the executable.)
View 3 Replies View Relatedwhat we are trying to do is, to let the customer click a button in the web browser, and then the web server to call a shell script to do the work. The output from the stdout && stderr of the script should be displayed in the web browser once finished or timeout, along with the exit code of the script.
The shell script is however not on the web server, but on another app server. So to call this script from the web server as the identity 'tomcat':
Code:
$ sh appuser@app-server:$appbin/app-script
The .ssh/id_rsa.pub thing is done, and we have no problem doing this in the command line so far.
Our loaded ex-colleage has left us the webpages (jsp) with code like these:
Code:
<%@ include file="jsp_functions.jsp" %>
<%
String cmd = "sh $appbin/app-script";

I'm new to Fedora and have just purchased a subscription to a GoDaddy Virtual Dedicated Server, which I'm able to control using SSH.I have a Java application that I want to run as a daemon on this VDS. Some google searching yielded a bunch of different methods of doing this, none of which I'm sure would be guaranteed to work with Fedora, so I was hoping someone here could give it to me straight and fill me in on the simplest way of doing this.What is the best/simplest way to run a Java application as a daemon on Fedora?

View 6 Replies View Relatedwhy my second cron job isn't running? The first one runs fine but the second one does not run at all. If I manually run the script using ./check.sh then it does what it is supposed to but will not run from cron. It should run every weekday at 9:45am, it looks good to me but clearly I am doing something wrong.
Code:
# m h dom mon dow command
#This will backup my hosted websites.
0 2 * * * /home/bob/scripts/websitebakscript.sh
#This will run check and upload it's contents to the net.

Cron refuses to work for a newbie.I am trying to setup a cron job to backup a folder in my home directory ('/home/scratch') to a folder ('home/internet_backup') that is mounted (using nfs) to a network folder.the folder ('home/internet_backup') is mounted correctly to the network folder upon system startup, so this part works.
View 4 Replies View RelatedI am making a webpage which is to be automatically generated every minute. I've created a cron job in crontab like this:
Code:
0-59 * * * * /usr/bin/php /var/www/site/updatestatistics.php > /dev/null
When I refresh the page 'updatestatistics.php' in my webbrowser it does generate a new page ('statistics.html', which is included in 'statistics.php'). But when I let this cron job do the job, nothing happens. I looked into the log file, it shows this:
Code:
(root) CMD (/usr/bin/php /var/www/site/updatestatistics.php > /dev/null)
After saving a few sample scripts in crontab, I discovered that cron is not running properly on my Ubuntu 9.10 (32 bit), after a recent reinstallation. Please note that the files "/var/log/cron" and "/etc/defaults/rc.conf" are empty in my system.

im searching for this answer now a pretty long time and i know that many similar questions where asked and i all looked themIm trying to run a the command "vncserver" on our opensuse11.2 server when its booted.many posts here endet in "put a sh script into your /kde4/Autostart" but that didtn help for me because the server runs without a screen and normally nobody is logged in. When i logged in that worked fine.i also tried to add the command "vncserver" to "/etc/init.d/boot.local " but that didnt work too. i think its to early executed to work.i also tried to activate the service to start up at boot with chkconfig vncserver start but the service vncserver is "unknown". when i type vncserver into the console after logging in everything is alright.you see i really tried a lot and searched a long time at google and in this forum but nothing worked
