Ubuntu :: Change Computer Name In 10.04?

Dec 15, 2010

During the installation I just named the computer "linux-pc." Now I want to change it to something more identifiable on my network, like "joes-linux-deskopt" or something. Where in Gnome do I fine the area to do this at?

Ubuntu :: How Do I Change Computer Name?

May 3, 2010

I was a bit hasty hitting "Okay" when I installed 10.4 and, as a result, I have a ridiculously long computer name. How can I change it?I have read a number of posts quite critical of this release. I love it. For the first time since I switched to Nvidia graphics cards I can get a graphical environment - straight out of the box.

Ubuntu Installation :: Computer Date/Time Change - 9.10 Live ISO

Apr 6, 2010

I am using Grub4Dos to boot Ubuntu 9.10 Desktop Live CD. In the menu.lst i made the following changes.

Quote:

title Ubuntu LiveCD 9.10
find --set-root /ubuntu-9.10-desktop-i386.iso
map /ubuntu-9.10-desktop-i386.iso (0xff)
map --hook
root (0xff)

[Code]....

The code runs fine and Ubuntu loads also from the ISO stored in the C: drive of my system.

The problem is when Ubuntu loads it changes my clock time. I have set the timezone to Indian Standard Time. Since it is live CD it should not make any changes in the system however, it does change the Data/Time of my system.

General :: Cannot Change The Default Setup Of The Computer?

Jul 23, 2011

I would like to run Windows (XP preferred) games and Linux on my MacBook Pro I got from school. However, there are some rules I have to follow. If I need to I will try to further clarify the rules, since they are in Swedish and there isn't a perfect translation. I cannot use Boot Camp. This is because Windows machines get viruses 24/7 and there are no viruses on Mac. Furthermore, we are using Visual Studio for about half the things we do through a virtual machine. Perfect for debugging, performance and "virtual machines don't get viruses", right? At least that's what my teachers think. I cannot change the default setup of the computer. In Swedish this basically tells me I cannot even start it up because then I will mount the drive, and make changes in RAM, and use the processor, and move electrodes from the battery and so on. They're telling me that that's way to specific, though, and that we aren't allowed to change the operating system files. I think we break that rule with each update, install or setting we ever touch. I may not use any program without first showing a receipt. The original casing, CD and the CD key isn't enough. A license like GNU is ok, though.

I basically need a way to boot into a USB drive or CD, with the ability to use network and DX9 to play games on Windows. Linux support isn't as crucial since OS X does have a lot of Linux support already. I've tried other ways of working around the rules like running games in Wine but I can't get DX9 based games to work and the FPS is terrible. They have the right to check the computer at any time to see if there is something bad there. Swapping a harddrive will definately be noticed.

Ubuntu :: Panel: Paraylzed Computer - Unable To Right Click To Remove Or Change

Jan 16, 2011

I wanted to create another panel on my computer. I created one, which formed directly above one that I already had (at the bottom of one of my two screens). Just out of curiosity I asked it to autohide. That was a big mistake. Now, I am unable to right click to remove or change the panel (the right click menu doesn't appear). This is true for all my panels. I thought logging out might fix it. No luck. Restart. No luck. Now my "top level" panel won't load, which means I don't have access to any of the main menus at all. Basically, the only think I can access at this point is what is on my desktop.

OpenSUSE Install :: Change Computer Name / Dedicated Root Password

Dec 2, 2009

I don't know that this post fits here, nor does it fit in "Applications." installing suse doesn't seem to give you the chance to name your computer. Now my computer is called "linux-0qvi" or something strange like that. I want to name my computer. Can I do this now without screwing things up??

Also, during install, there didn't seem to be an opportunity to make a separate root password. My first (and main user) account is now set up with admin rights, so I have to type in my account password every time I do something as root. Can I set a separate dedicated root password without screwing up my system?

Hardware :: USB Thumb Drive Connect With Computer - Quickly Change What Was On Screen

May 9, 2010

Can Linux emulate a USB disk? Why would you want to do this you ask? Say you have a digital picture frame that uses a USB thumb drive you could connect your computer to it and quickly change what was on the screen. I realize you need some special hardware for this as both the PC and the frame would want to be USB masters. But there are USB transfer cables you can buy on-line that do USB master to master connections.

Software :: Access Computer A's Shares As Well As The Third Computer, The Aforementioned Computers Cannot Access Computer B

May 28, 2011

I have three computers in my network, but two will be mentioned. Computer A is a Linux Mint 9/Windows 7 dual-boot, and I have just installed Mandriva Free 2010.2, which I will call Computer B.

Now my main problem is that Computer B, while it can see and access Computer A's shares as well as the third computer, the aforementioned computers cannot access Computer B. The message was: "Unable to mount location/Failed to mount Windows share." Now, the SMB protocol was used because of the third computer and Computer A have Windows OSs installed in them.

What I originally wanted was that I can share Computer B's NTFS partition, namely Documents and Downloads, to the other computers. And I can't do that, because of the error message.

What I can do, however, is use Computer B to view shares from the other two computers (Computer A, as an example). By my experiences in Linux Mint, I understand that I'd have to mount my Windows partitions in order to share them. I don't even know if my NTFS drive in Computer B is mounted, though that is what was described.

Ubuntu :: Grub4Dos Error / Tried To Switch Back To Computer Control And Computer Went Black?

Jan 9, 2010

Here's the situation:

I have Ubuntu 9.1 with wubi and Vista on my laptop. I was playing my laptop through the TV, then I tried to switch it back to computer control and the computer went black. I had to hold to power button to restart, and suddenly grub4dos starts up when I try to launch ubuntu. I can still launch Vista. Is there anything I can do to save my system? At the very least, I would like to be able to copy data from my ubuntu system to my vista system. How can I do that? I can't find C:/ubuntu/disks. It doesn't seem to exist.

Ubuntu Networking :: Assigned Computer A's Static Ip To Computer C Without Changing Dhcp Setting?

Aug 18, 2010

I set up a dhcp server in the lan and assigned static ips to two computers, computer A and B, according to their mac address. Everything was running fine. But when I turned off computer A, connected computer C to the network, and assigned computer A's static ip to computer C without changing dhcp setting. Computer C was able to access the internet. When I turned on computer A, dhcp couldn't assign an ip address to it, and computer C showed an error message of ip conflict and failed to use internet. I wonder if dhcp server is able to prevent other computer from using the same static ip that is already assigned to a computer according to its mac address.

Ubuntu Multimedia :: Find A Way To Watch Videos From Main Desktop Computer On Another Computer?

Jul 9, 2011

I've been trying to find a way to watch videos from my main desktop computer on another computer I've plugged into an HDTV. I'm such a Linux newbie that I decided to give Mythbuntu a try. It was way to complicated for what I needed, and I'm sure that some more experienced people reading my first two sentences laughed to themselves at my naivety.

What I am trying to find is simple: browsing one computer's home folder from another computer, and playing the videos therein. If there's anything like Mythvideo that requires less than half of the skill requirements, I will telepathically send love to the person that informs me of it.

Ubuntu :: Way To Remotely Disconnect OTHER Computer's Pidgin / While Using Current Computer?

Aug 29, 2010

i have 2 computers.both have pidgin messenger with the same accounts (yahoo, msn, aim, facebook...). both can connect at the same time. both connect at startup.both work well.some of the chat protocols disconnect upon sensing multiple connections (as in, when one account signs in from two places).good.others don't.bad.

is there a way to remotely disconnect the OTHER computer's pidgin while using the current computer? while both instances of pidgin are running, the OTHER computer will see all incoming messages on pidgin. anyone at that computer will see a one-sided conversation.simple solution would be to stop them from connecting at startup. that still doesn't solves the problem of "what if i forgot to turn one off" or "what if someone runs pidgin on the other computer."
