Ubuntu :: Cannot Delete User?

I am having a problem with my login labeled "mysql" with the command # groupadd mysql# useradd -g mysql is is of course all within the confines of being super user. What I am having trouble with is that I cannot delete the user through the terminal using the command userdel but to no avail, it states that the user mysql is still logged in even though I have restarted the computer and logged in only to my root account.Whenever I try to log into mysql account it gives me multiple error messages something about the ICE authority and nautilus and when i get past these and onto the home screen, there is nothing, the wallpaper is there but there are no icons and no tool-bars, I cannot shutdown or get to a terminal while on the dysfunctional user. I cannot delete the user because it states I am logged in even though I am not.

Recently I setup a system for a non-technical user. He is only using Firefox, Pidgin and OpenOffice for about 2 hours a day. I have created a folder "/home/jim/myFiles" where he can save his document files. But Jim has accidentally deleted his myFiles folder on 2 occasions. He had intended to delete a file in that folder. Is there a way to lock the folder so that the user and create/read/write documents in that folder but not delete the folder itself?

Ever since I upgraded from karmic to lucid my user account has been really buggy. The other profiles on the computer are acting normal but I believe mine is acting strangely because of the way I had my desktop set up before I upgraded (conky and a terminal on my desktop, compiz). Is there a way to reset my account to the default settings? I figured if I could delete my account and recreate it everything would be okay but I can not delete the account.

I run a server where multiple people can access it via SSH and have access to the same folder. Someone recently decided to stop using my server so I deleted their login account inside the User and Group GUI inside gnome. I accidentally selected delete files owned by this user. I didn't think much of it because the user didn't actually own any of the files since it was shared among all of them. Anyway, ALL the files in that shared home directory vanished, including the home directory. How can I recover this? It didn't move all the files to the root trash or my local user's trash folder. Are the permanently deleted?

I want to limit delete of a particular folder in the user's home folder and to restrict any add/change/delete on files in that restricted directory.

I just wanted to post this in case it helps anyone else. I have all my personal files (photos, documents, etc.) saved on a separate ext3 partition (so I don't have to worry about them on new installs, etc.). When I tried to delete files, however, I always received the message: "Cannot move file to trash, do you want to delete immediately?".
After much searching and failed fix attempts (mostly unnecessary messing with fstab), I found this post, which is now archived (or I would have replied there):ttp://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=759544. And frediE's solution, with a couple tiny modifications, finally solved the problem! (So huge thanks to frediE! ). irst, I found my user id, which is 1000, by going to the System > Administration > Users and Groups menu, selecting my user name (e.g. jnewm), clicking "Properties", andselecting "Advanced".
Second, I created a folder on the root of my partition called ".Trash-1000". (I may have needed to use "gksu nautilus" from a terminal to create the folder, I don't recall.)Third and last, I navigated to the root of the partition in my terminal and ran: sudo chown -R jnewm:jnewm .Trash-1000. Followed by: sudo chmod -R jnewm .Trash-1000 (I doubt this second step was necessary, but I'm listing it just in case). (confirmed unnecessary)

way to automate adding and removing users from 10 different Fedora 7 servers. We use them as print servers and our users have a user name and password to authenticate with when printing. We also use Samba to talk to a W2k3 server that tracks and charges the users for what they print. The set up was done by a vendor and after 6 months of being in production the scripts they created has flaws.
I need a way for a script to run as often as possible that will remove, change, or delete user accounts from the servers and from Samba. how to most effectively achieve this?
It would be ideal to have a file that gets written to when a change needs to be made then a script to make these changes?

Any program that has a web interface and has a features such as adding, deleting users as well as changing password. If none, does anyone knows a program that can interact with a script. i just installed ubuntu yesterday (dual boot) and ive finally decided i wanted to wipe windows xp off my hard drive first of all i know how to delete partitions and such but then i went to g parted and saw all this crazy info (screenshot posted) im really confused and down wanna end up ruining my installation.
But what i want to do is remove my xp installation merge the empty partition with my linux partition and then rebuild the grub2 config file.

We are looking to monitor and log selected application file systems for file create/modify/delete changes that will also include, user account that changed/deleted the file, file name and date and time of event. Everything I have looked at does not seem to provide all of the information that we need.Inotify seems to monitor modify/create/delete but does not seem to provide the user account. Auditd seems to monitor modify/create/append with user account, but not deletes.We need to provide this information to auditing for Sarbane Oxley compliance.

we know that /etc/passwd - is a replica of /etc/passwd file and acts as a backup in any damage done to /etc/passwd file..i have observed a strange thing in RHEL 5.4....for example... if /etc/passwd has 100 accounts.. then /etc/passwd - is having only 99 accounts....when i add 101 useraccount with "useradd" then /etc/passwd has 101 accounts and /etc/passwd is having the 100th account of /etc/passwd - ..when i delete /etc/passwd and recover it with /etc/passwd - from runlevel 1 the lastly created user is not having his account after recovery.. what is the solution? this is same case even with /etc/shadow and /etc/shadow -

One of our admins accidentally deleted the adm userin the following way,#userdel -r admi recreated the "user" from the /etc/passwd- & /etc/shadow- files and added to its groupand created the /var/adm directory but is there more that needs to be done ?Lot of files were written, so i have not yet tried debugfs or any file recoverybecause i couldnt get any google info on what adm does.OS Details:CentOS release 5.2 (Final)Can anyone scale the damage that could have occured?

SO after using Testdisk to recover some images, the folders recup_dir.1 & 2 have saved in my FIle System area, when ever I try to press delete noting happens. I have also tried rm -f -rrm -f -fIt still dont delete, I have also deleted my user account and made a new one, but the files are still there.

I am trying to use an old box as backup server. I have tried a couple of possibilities along the lines of:

The problem is it does not delete files that has been removed from my local system?
I run the command as root on the local system.
(I realize I should properly not ssh into the server as the server's root but I'm having trouble with the permissions and I want to make sure everything else works before messing around with it)

I just can't stand knowing that there's a slight problem with my PC.I have roughly 12.5 Gigs of files, mostly movies that are multiple clones of a particular movie (which was an entirely different problem altogether) and I CANNOT DELETE THESE THINGS! There has to be a simple way to do it from terminal, problem is, I can't seem to find the trash directory in terminal.

Original HOWTO can be found at: [URL]... So the other day I was in IRC and someone had brought up a problem where they created a new Administrative user, but didnt have rights to use sudo. Looked into the problem a little bit to figure out what was wrong, and it turns out that when you create a new user through the user manager (in kubuntu, anyways. Havent tested in Gnome.) the user gets added to the adm group, however, a quick look at the sudoers file shows that its looking for users in the admin group to allow the use of sudo. So, to solve the problem we do the following: If youre on the new admin user (which Im assuming you are) use the following commands:

su [insert username of old account without brackets]
sudo usermod -G admin [username of new admin account without brackets]
exit
Then simply logout, and then log back in (not always necessary, but the easiest way to flush the permissions.)

su [insert username of old account without brackets]
Means were going to Switch User to the old admin account

sudo usermod -G admin [username of new admin account without brackets]
This simply adds the admin group to the secondary group list for the new user

I wanted to create an user but don't allow it to see the other user's home folder so I made chmod 0750 /home/folder and it worked fine so I went ahead and decided to completely forbid access to the root folder and I had the "great" idea to make chmod 0750 /, and now I'm having problems with wine and other applications, in example I used to have a folder in this address 209.239.114.51/mmgr but now it's giving me errors and if I try to run some applications I got error "There was an error creating the child process for this terminal"
