i decided to install ubuntu in my PC,i downloaded the .ISO image and i installed it in my USB. After trying it and all that i observed that i really liked it and i decided to formally install it to my computer in the hard drive. When i reached the partition thing,i selected to dual boot with Vista and select between each them in every startup,when i clicked FORWARD it gave me an error which i did not read(because,again im a noob) so i clicked cancel.
Today i wanted to go through the process again and now really install it,so again i went to the time zone part and i clicked forward but then,instead of taking me straight to the partition phase,it appeard a window saying "The installer has detected that the following disks have mounted partitions: /dev/sda ...." I clicked yes,to unmount this partitions so it took me to the partition thing,once there i selected the option to install Ubuntu with Vista and select between them i neach startup,then i clicked forward and went to the username/computer name process,once i finished i continued to the next part,the installation,but i selected to import all of my WIndows VIsta default user data,after that i clicked forward and went to the installation process,i went down stairs to eat soemthing while it finishes,i came back and it was finished,it asked me to reboot so i clicked in Restart Now.
When it tried to boot,appeared an error saying: Error: no such devide found: #################### Grub load(or something like that) grub rescue: and it was a command line,since there i havent been able to boot into vista or Ubuntu,im really scared because is the first thing related to OS installing ive done,so i booted my USB and ran the trial and right now im trying to find out what to do from that trial version.
I just went to the INSTALL UBUNTU 10.04 LTS application under the System>Administration Menu and found out that in the partition phase the Install and allow to select between both systems in eahc startup option,i dont know what to do,i foudn out that my HD has still all its data(MUsic/Videos/Folders/Programs/ect.)its just that i cannot boot from it. Also in GParted it appears as /dev/sda1/ and a warning icon besides it,also when i go into information, thers this warning there [URL]
I have a dual-boot ubuntu-Windows XP computer, and today, while rummaging in the basement, found some Windows 3.1 floppies. My laptop has no floppy drive, but just to ask, can you intsall old OSs (Winows 3, Mac OS 7)on your PC to make it tri boot if you already have some modern operating systems? And I've seen that old Operating systems can be downloaded, so how do you install those?

You see the thing is that when I choose an operating system at the boot up, it lists all of the updates to ubuntu. so there are like 12 options to choose from besides windows XP and Ubuntu 9.10.
View 3 Replies View RelatedI got a new laptop today and the first thing I did was to install Ubuntu as a dual boot with Windows 7. Everything seemed to work the first time I loaded Ubuntu after installation, and Windows also seemed to work. Then, Windows Maintenance said there was possible disk corruption, so I restarted the computer and now I get this error when trying to load. After reading around about similar problems I think it might be a problem with the grub bootloader. It is 64-bit if that makes a difference.
View 5 Replies View RelatedI am trying to install Ubuntu 9.10 on an old IBM T21 laptop. It starts very happily, and I am able to partition the disk & copy the files to the HDD. However, when it loads the desktop there is an icon for the CD drive (and install disk). Everything appears to be fine, but I don't see any confirmation of the installation being completed. The CD drive does not open when the button is pressed. When I restart the laptop, I get the message 'operating system not found'. Starting the machine using the CD works fine. The disk shows that the partitions have been created, and I am told that Ubuntu 9.10 is installed.
View 5 Replies View RelatedI formatted my 2nd hard drive(IDE) inside of windows. So I had a clean 80 GIG HDD. I downloaded the wubi installer and allowed it to have 30 GIGs of the newly formatted hard drive. I restarted it and it just used my 250GIG SATA drive. I then restarted and pressed esc. to make it use the 80 GIG and it said operating system not found. I then deleted it and tried again. Same result. I then reformatted it marked it as active and installed Ubuntu again and it did boot the 80 but it said the NTLDR is missing.

View 3 Replies View RelatedI've been using Ubuntu Netbook edition on my Asus eee pc 1005HA, dual-booting with Windows 7.Things have been fine with it for a month or two. However, I've now run into some trouble with Grub2 and the MBR, and I cannot get my computer to boot into ANY operating system. Right now I'm booting from the Ubuntu installation CD to "try Ubuntu" -- it's the only way I can use my computer at all.
I have looked through the forums and googled, and already tried several methods of fixing Grub2, none of which have worked so far. Here's the situation: I wanted to disable / uninstall Grub2, so that the computer would boot as normal into Windows 7, to fix some problems and then reinstall Grub2 later. To do this I just went to the Windows System Repair environment, opened the command prompt, and entered the two commands "bootrec /fixmbr" and "bootrec /fixboot" with the understanding that this would reset the Windows control of booting, and remove Grub2's control. The result was that my computer cannot boot properly at all. No Windows and no Grub2.
So far I've tried to fix this by using the Super Grub Disk to try to use the auto-repair feature, which failed. I've also tried in various ways to reinstall / repair / update Grub by using the Terminal in Ubuntu (through the "try Ubuntu" CD), but so far none of the methods I've found have worked. If anyone could explain or direct me to a step-by-step of how to repair the MBR and install Grub2 from scratch,
I have been trying to find an answer for the past 4 hours, and I am stressing out right now. I bought a IBM Thinkcentre Celeron 2.8ghz off ebay, and when I turn it on it had no operating system. It says: "1962: No operating system found. Press F1 to reboot." I press F1, and it just did they same thing. Came up with that message.
Then I searched on the net for some answers on how to install ubuntu onto a computer without an operating system, and they said to enter BIOS menu and boot the ubuntu from the USB. So I turned the comp back on, and I pressed every button on the Computer except F1, and it did nothing. I dont know how to get into the BIOS menu.
I have no clue how Linux works and I haven't had much experience installing/dual booting operating systems. Most of my knowledge in computers comes from fixing errors with crappy hardware or Windows. Now I want to learn how to use a computer instead of how to fix it. Hence, I want to have Windows & Linux on my computer. My laptop(Acer Aspire 4530) has two hard drives, one is Vista and the other was empty(until I filled it with stuff). What is the simplest method to install Linux (or any of its variations) on this computer? Do I just install/partition all of Drive B to Linux and leave Drive A for Vista?
View 3 Replies View RelatedI recently installed Ubuntu Netbook Remix (10.04) on my brother's Acer Aspire One (751h) netbook, set up to dual boot with XP Professional. The initial install was successful, with both OS's booting correctly. However, after a series of updates and module builds (this machine has the Poulsbo chipset, still somewhat of a mess), Grub2 is now unable to boot XP, displaying the error "Operating system not found."
To be clear, grub works properly (aside from not booting XP), so the MBR is intact, although I've rerun grub-install to be safe. Restoring the windows MBR (using testdisk) boots XP happily, but of course ignores the ubuntu installation. I also had testdisk rebuild the NTFS boot sector, to no change - grub still doesn't work, the windows MBR does. Using the grub console, I can "root (hd0,1)" and see files on the XP partition, but "chainloader +1; boot" again fails with the same error. The ubuntu install can likewise mount the NTFS partition with no problems.
Given the fact that switching the MBR fixes the issue, I'm suspecting a Grub2 configuration problem. However, the simplicity of "root (hd0,1); chainloader +1; boot" leaves me stumped as to what that could be. Also, the error text "Operating system not found" is suspiciously identical to my BIOS's error message when attempting to boot from a non-bootable medium (as I found out while attempting to make a bootable usb stick with my mac).
Installed linux-image-2.6.32-bpo on my laptop today and after the reboot i got "no operating system found" . I'm now typing using a Puppy live cddrom .

I burned this to a DVD-RW. On a 120gb drive I allocated a large percentage to Windows and have put two partitions on the end; 1gb for swap, 15gb for Ubuntu. However, when I go to install and get to the partition manager bit it claims no operating systems have been found. Contrary to this, when I boot into the live CD it sees all the partitions, however these cannot be accessed and no error messages are displayed (However, accessing the Windows partition appeared to corrupt the install and I had to format...). When running install from the live environment the same no operating systems found error occurs. Windows 7 works fine and the drive is IDE (if this makes any difference).

Just did this with the Debian 6.0 Net install .iso: 4.3.1. Preparing a USB stick using a hybrid CD or DVD image. Debian CD and DVD images can now be written directly a USB stick, which is a very easy way to make a bootable USB stick. Simply choose a CD or DVD image that will fit on your USB stick. See Section 4.1,Official Debian GNU/Linux CD-ROM Sets to get a CD or DVD image.
Alternatively, for very small USB sticks, only a few megabytes in size, you can download the mini.iso image from the netboot directory (at the location mentioned in Section 4.2.1,Where to Find Installation Image).The CD or DVD image you choose should be written directly to the USB stick, overwriting its current contents.
I try installing Ubuntu 9.10 in my computer On reaching the prepare disk section it shows me that there is no operating system installed yet i have XP installed. it is also not showing the partitions in my computer yet i have 4 partitions. i cant do without ubuntu in my machine.

View 12 Replies View RelatedI just purchased an Acer Aspire 5050, and was trying to install Ubuntu on it for my mother. (No, I am not forcing it on her, she actually asked for it.) I burned a CD and put it in the drive, and it said Operating System not found. So I went into the BIOS and told it to boot nothing but the optical drive. Same error. I burned another disk with the same computer, and then another computer. Same error. (Hereafter referred to as "nothing")
So I went and purchased a 4GB flash drive from micro center. Converted my iso to img and DDed from my Mac, then set the BIOS to boot it. The BIOS recognizes the disk, but won't boot from it, giving the same error. So I thought: Fine, I guess I can't get _nix to boot, how about Windows 7? Put the disk in that I used to install on my laptop, genuine Windows 7 disk, nothing. I tried the Vista disk that came with the computer, also nothing.
Any ideas on how to install ANY operating system on this machine? I get absolutely no POST errors. I turned off Quiet Boot and looked, no errors there either. I would be fine installing any _nix based, it doesn't have to be an easy install. I can provide more information as needed, not a problem. I can't think of any more useful information at the moment.
I'm trying to install debian and when the installer starts it UEFI at the top, instlal completes however on reboot it says 'no operating system found' i've read it can be because of UEFI but I have tried different bios options but to no avail.
Bios options
Sata mode: AHCI/IDE (haven't tried IDE yet)
Tried various combinations of the below
CSM: enable/disable
Boot Priority: Auto/legancy first/uefi first
Quick Boot: enable/disable
Boot up Num-lock Status: on/off
I will have a hosting server installed with debian 7.5 and has the following error: "operating system not found".
I've done everything I could. Reinstall grub and I let it install fine and no errors, but does not booting, among the iso "boot-repair-disk-32bit.iso" and repair, all good, but not booting.
The system has a Raid 5 disks with one volume and two partitions, including a livecd ubuntu, and I see perfectly partitions have no problems, checked. I go with the "Super Grub Disk" (iso) and let me enter the system out there, but they do not enter the iso, not start me. All isos the'm putting on a flash memory to boot.
I have been working with dualboot XP and ubuntu on my laptop and screwed the system completely. No matter what I do I get the message "Operating system not found".I also have been trying with, super grub disk, without success.
My question: Can I solve the problem with a new or a blank Harddisk?
After installing 11.2, using KDE, there was a transparent folder on the desktop containing a set of icons. Like openSUSE and Online Help and a couple of others. If I clicked on it, a menu would come out of the right side of it. I clicked on the X and the folder went away, never to be seen again. I tried to find how to get it back but was unsuccessful.
After installing 11..3, using KDE, there it was again! After monkeying around with it for a while, I clicked on the X and again, it seems gone for good! I still can't find how to get it back!
Also, it seems no one else has this problem so I guess I'm just not capable of operating this computer thing correctly.
I am currently using ubuntu 9.04 and I am planning to have a dual boot my system with fedora 12. My computer is quite old and I have RAM of 256 MB DIMM 266 MHZ with pentium 4 processor. So will the dual operating systems work in my computer??
