Ubuntu :: Access The 40 GB File System On Run "fdisk -l"?

There is a problem with my Sony VAIO PCG-GRX670. My windows has crashed and I don't see any way to revive it without formatting. I have a 40 GB HDD, it is initially split into 18 and 22 GB (C: and D: ). The problem is that, whenever I try to access the HDD, whether I do it from Windows XP Live CD, Ubuntu Live CD or some utilities (like Norton Commander - like programs and Partition editors), it is either not recognized whatsoever, or recognized as a whole unpartitioned 40 GB drive, and I see only the contents of C:. They say that the amount of occupied space is about 37 GB, which is true if you sum the amount of occupied space on C: and D:. But, they dont recognize it as a split disk, and (the main part) I cannot access the data I have on D: . When I access the 40 GB file system on Ubuntu and run "fdisk -l", it gives:

The question is, is there any way to access the D: from Ubuntu, so I could backup my data from it onto a USB Hard disk?

I was running some programs on Thursday and also installing something via the software center when I started getting strange errors. Then I kept getting told that the file system was read only (when I tried to save my work in the applications and while installing software). I clicked the restart button and got a blank popup (no restart or cancel buttons). So I press the power button and it shutsdown but quicker than usual. Power is back up and it goes to busybox.
Ok so I think this is easy to fix, just boot off CD open gparted and perform a check on the filesystem. It happened before and this solved it. But when I opened gparted and tried to check the disk I get:GParted 0.6.2

I have never seen this one before (see below) - note how /dev/sda1 is mounted from the first disk listed by fdisk, but /dev/sda2 comes from the second disk; what is going on here? This is what I did: I installed the latest debian "Testing", which went well - it found the disks in the order show by fdisk -l here. When it booted up after installation, it failed because it couldn't find /, which I repaired by editing the grub menu (I told it to start from the other disk), and it came up. But now I had to mount /u01 by hand from /dev/sda1; strange. I suppose I could just go and change the physical disks around, but I'd like to understand this. Any ideas?

I've a new external usb drive that was shipped formatted fat32. I wanted to convert this to ext3; so I performed a mkfs.ext3. I then noticed that fdisk was still reporting the usb drive as fat32 (even after reboot), but mount was reporting ext3: so I fdisk'ed the drive and change the partition's system id to 83 (Linux)

What i really need to know is if there is a way to access a Ubuntu file system on a hard drive from a live CD. When i acess it now it just shows the Windows files on it, and i cant access the Ubuntu partition. What happened was this: I was trying to install Ubuntu on an external hard drive. I moved all the settings to the Hard drive so i didnt think it would affect my other drives. I mustve missed one of them because insteading of loading GRUB like it normally does, it came up with GRUB error 21 and did nothing. I tried to fix it, but nothing worked. I finally decided to unplug everything except the external and install it from there, so id atleast have a functioning desktop. As it turns out, my comp doesnt suport USB booting. So the only way i can use my computer is by Live CD. I was trying to fix things so i had both hard drives power supply unplugged. being slightly drowsy from staying up late that night, I plugged them in while my computer was on. the first one went in just fine, no problems. The second one though, also my master drive, i was having troubles pluging in. while i was turning it to fit in, it made a big spark and shocked my master drive. That drive had my MBR and Windows on it. Now It cant find a MBR, and i cant access the ubuntu partition on my slave drive. Is there any way to save this?? im 99.9% sure ive screwed myself over hardcore epically, but im hoping to save at least 1/2 my data.

I have reinstalled my centOS linux in my laptop.
I have installed ntfs-3g by yum install fuse fuse-ntfs-3g recommended from :[url]
I have mount it to my window ntfs system and setup
Now I am able to access window ntfs system.
HOWEVER, I could not access to USB NTFS system. May I know why?
It gave me: The volumn "Expansion Drive" uses the ntfs file system which is not supported by your system
The USB drive is FreeAgent (500G). I have partitioned it to 3 parts. 1 part is ntfs. The other two is ext3. I can access ext3 smoothly.

The desktop computer of my two children has a total of three users:
1) The superuser (me)
2) The user 1001 (my elder son)
3) The user 1002 (my younger son)
Both users 1001 and 1002 can not access their files system, and also they can not save any attachments from incoming mails.
What I tried so far:
I accessed the file manager as superuser, and went: >Root>Home. Here I right-clicked on the folder User 1001, selected properties, selected the tab 'permissions' and allowed this user to read and write into this folder. I also checked the checkbox �extend this permission to all subfolders and its contents.
The problem is, when I reboot, everything is 'forgotten' and I am at quadrant zero again.
Eventually I should state that part of the folders are from a backup drive, because the hard disk had to be replaced so, once I re-installed the OS on the new hard drive, I copied the folders from the backup drive into the home folder.
One last question:
Is there a good tutorial about permissions?

i get file system errors on boot up. found logs in /var/logs but cant access them. second best thing i can do is to re-install debian but no one seems to want to say how thats done. my disk wont run in wine (some error i dont remember) so i cant use my CD /flashdrive to re-install.
1) i need to read the log files and try to fix the install
2) if i cant fix i need to know how to wipe the OS and do a fresh install

I have been trying to use my DS2490 USB to serial device with a Maxim .DG1921G thermocron with owfs. It is supposed to give me access to a virtual file system for the thermocrom without needing to launch owfs as root.

I am running shell command through C program using system() routine.
I am executing "opcontrol --status" an executable using the this routine and I get the following error. access: unix error (2) No such file or directory
But when I give the complete path to the executable it runs perfectly.
The executable is installed in "/usr/local/bin/" And the path variable has this path.

I'm running window xp and unbuntu 10.04. I ran into a problem where I reinstalled unbuntu by erasing old one under CD boot. During installation, it asked me to place files and i placed it in /. Now when I log in as single user (only user or other at login screen) and try to change any system files, it said I don't have permission. I can't change anything or access root file. I try chmod function and it said i don't have permission as well.

I bought a new SD card which I intend to put some MP3s on - except that I can't write to it because it tells me the destination is Read Only. No-probs thinks I: I'll just reformat it.
"Error creating file system: helper exited with exit code 1: cannot open /dev/mmcblk0p1: Read-only file system"
Various chmod commands all result in Read-only file system. I tried umount then mount commands, but it couldn't find it to mount once I'd unmounted it using the same /media/ file path (I assume it's the only one).

I decided to create LVM on /home and /var partitions but due to some errors occured and I delete the /home partitions. That's why partition table altered. Have just assembled a new computer and thought I would install the 64 bit version of openSUSE 11.2 in a "Windows free zone". After a hiccup or two I have managed to get a system of sorts running but on trying to copy files from my old computer(via a memory stick) it tells me that Vfat is an unknown file system.On my old computer I am running 32 bit openSUSE 11.2 as a dual boot system with Windows XP and have no problems moving files between the two different file systems.Is it possible to get a 64 bit file system to read 32 bit file system drives and if so how do I do it?

Can't log into my XFCE desktop like I normaly do. all the sudden I get notified that my xsession lasted less then 10 secondsLooking at the error I can see this:
Unable to access file /home/username/.iceauthority: No such file or directory
Using failsafe I can start a terminal. From terminal I tried to start X
Code: sudo startx Result: Running on desplay:0
So I tried to run this;
Code: sudo startxfce4 And I get up a graphical desktop.
So this is not a critical situation as I easily can use this method to log on, but as there has been something causing this I would like to be able to resolve this nonetheless. Btw it is not the old chmod trick in play here, cause my .iceauthority file is gone alltogheter.

I am trying to check what all processes are accessing a particular file (a UDP socket in my case) on a filesystem.I am using 'fuser' for that.But, it seems, it only gives the processes accessing the file at that particular moment.Is there any way to continuously run 'fuser' (or some other command) which will give all processes accessing the file during its run?OR is it possible to generate a filesystem alert when a particular process accesses the file?

In System Monitor, on the File Systems tab, the "Total", "Available" and "Used" columns don't seem to add up, and the "Used" percentage doesn't seem correct either.
My config:
/dev/sda1 = 80 GB SSD drive, / partition.
/dev/sdb1 = 50 GB FAT32 partition of an external 500 GB USB hard disk.
/dev/sdb2 = remainder of the 500 GB USB hard disk encrypted using luks.
Screenshot: The /dev/sda1 figures don't really add up well, but they're close at least (how you get "50% Used" from any of those figures I don't know!).
However, for /dev/sdb2, they're miles off:
"Free" = 146.2 GiB
"Total" = 409.7 GiB
"Available" = 125.4 GiB
"Used" = 263.5 GiB

So 2 days ago everything was all fine on my machine. Has been for about a month, but all of a sudden as of yesterday I have no sound, I am seeing IRQ interupts on boot, During boot I am seeing file system is not clean, , and swap space is being used for the first time while doing normal task, etc. These are 2 new hard drives in RAID 1 with ReiserFS. I should have used a newer FS but thats a whole other argument.
Anyways here we go.
The system is Debian Lenny amd64
Physical RAM 4GB + 6GB swap

I plugged in my USb drive into my computer yesterday and tried to delete a folder. I was unable to do so and got the following message
Cannot move file to trash, do you want to delete immediately? The file "my file" cannot be moved to the trash. Show Details Unable to create trashing info file: Read-only file system
So when I click on delete I get another error message:
Error while deleting.
There was an error deleting Case Study Database. Show Details Error removing file: Read-only file system
At this point I can only click on Skip, Skip All, or Cancel.
I have not changed anything on the stick recently so I dont know what is causing the problem.
