Ubuntu :: Window Sizing In Lucid Netbook Edition ?
Jun 28, 2010
I have tried the Netbook Edition as a live CD (SD card actually) and as a VMWare virtual machine - trying to decide if I want to use it rather than the "real" distro on my netbook. The issue which is bugging me at the moment is that all windows seem to open full screen. Granted this is generally appropriate with a small display. However, I do not need a full screen terminal window.
So, I right click on the titlebar and select Unmaximize (took me a while to figure out that one as there are no window close, min, max buttons displayed) and I set the window to the size I want it. I then close the terminal. When I launch terminal again it is full screen.
Is there a way to tell gnome to remember the last window size for an app? My 10.04 desktop seems to do this by default.

linux newbie here -- there is a feature in windows 7 that I would love to make work here. I'm sure there is some way to do it, given how customizable linux is, but I have no idea how.
In windows 7, if you hit the Windows key + the left arrow, it will automatically resize the window you are looking at to fill half the screen, on the left side. Likewise if you push the right arrow, for the right side, Windows+up arrow maximizes, and windows + down arrow minimizes. Does anyone have an idea of how I can configure ubuntu to do the same thing?

I am having trouble installing Ubuntu 10.10 netbook remix edition onto a Acer Aspire one netbook. I am attempting to install the OS from a 16GB PNY usb drive w/ the usb-universal installer and ubuntu 10.10 netbook remix .ISO
The reoccurring problem that I am encountering is that when I boot from the USB-drive and begin to install everything seems to be working, and then it is stuck at the menu where it asks who are you?; and of course i have filled in everything asked and at the bottom where you can look at what its doing in the terminal/detail section all it says is ready when you are, and the forward tap is unselectable.

I am running Debian Jessie with Gnome 3.14.2 on a Macbook Pro 15" with retina display. My resolution is currently set to 2880:1800 and any time I try to lower it, the whole screen goes to black (even if I change it to something in the 16:10 ratio) and I just have to keep force restarting when doing that. I want to lower it because a lot of stuff is really small. Certain aspects of windows in programs are so small, and in order to properly view stuff on my web browser I have to increase the magnification to around 250% for it to be reasonable.
Some things seem normally sized in the windows, and thus make things awkward on the screen, especially in chrome. Is there a way to fix this without having to change my resolution and/or font sizes? Making font sizes bigger on the gnome tweak tool makes things look a bit more awkward because it squeezes the text into small spaces. I would rather keep a higher resolution for a better picture, and changing it seems to mess things up. Here is what my browser looks like (without magnifying). Notice how the font size in the bookmark bar is disproportionately large compared to the buttons in the top right to close/max/min the window.
And this problem isn't just in the browser, but for example, in matlab everything is extremely tiny. I want to make everything larger, not just the text...

Is there a torrent for the netbook edition of ubuntu.
I'm running it in VirtualBox because I only want it to faff around with, I tried the full desktop version but it was a bit slow so I thought I'd give the netbook version a go. (I'm on a laptop)
I'm asking this because the download is very slow.
I'm on a 20mb connection and it starts off around 400k but then goes down to 30 so it will take hours.

I recently been given my dad's old netbook which is a toshiba nb100
I installed Ubuntu Netbook Edition onto it as i have some experiance with linux and have used ubuntu before and thought it would speed up this little machine. After the initial grind of the instal, it seemed to be running fine, however i didnt really like the netbook layout.
I noticed on the log in screen that i could select the desktop or netbook edition, is that normal? i have been using the desktop version since.
I have been doing some research however into the 11.04 release that is almost ready, and is ready in alpha stages. And what i understand is that the netbook layout is called Unity, and will be replacing gnome.
If and when i upgrade to 11.04, if i upgrade on the netbook login, will it replace both the logins i have access to currently, because the ubuntu install is changed and that was basically just choosing which display to use, unity or gnome. is that right?
Also i heard that for the 11.10 release they will be bringing the gnome desktop back? and that ubuntu netbook edition is being scrapped as they are basically merging
At the moment i prefer the desktop layout as i know where to access everything, although im sure i could get used to Unity, if its not too graphically demanding.
Either way i think i will wait till the end of april to upgrade to 11.04 as this laptop is fairly slow to begin with.

On the Ubuntu website, under the alternate downloads, there is a link for 11.04 netbook torrent download but clicking on the link gives an "unobtainable" message. On the "error" page, Chromium provided a link to the ubuntu page with all the 11.04 versions and checking through those there is not a netbook version.
Does this mean that there will be no netbook version of 11.04 and the desktop version will be OK on a netbook or is it simply that it is not available yet? I am intending to upgrade my current Acer Aspire One to 11.04 and am considering a clean install rather than upgrading via the update manager. I have downloaded the desktop version just in case.

I am running Ubuntu Netbook Edition 10.04 on my netbook.
I noticed this version has the ability to switch between desktop environments such as Gnome Desktop and the Netbook Edition UI. When I am in Gnome, I really love using CPU Frequency Monitor available for the Gnome top panel.
My question is: Can I use the CPU Frequency Monitor in the Netbook Edition? If so, How?

I'm trying to install Ubuntu Netbook Edition on my Asus Eee PC 1015 netbook (running Windows 7 starter) using wubi, but it fails to install every time. Wubi will download the torrent, download the .iso, then tell me it "cannot retrieve the required installation files." I have also tried manually downloading the .iso and placing it in the same folder as wubi, but it fails to validate the file and begins downloading the torrent.
Just to check, I tried using wubi to install Ubuntu 10.4 and had no problems at all.
I took a look at the log, which says
Code:
08-27 13:37 DEBUG TaskList: ### Running check_iso...
08-27 13:37 DEBUG CommonBackend: Checking C:ubuntuinstallubuntu-10.04-netbook-i386.iso
[Code]....
EDIT: Right, so it was the wrong version: Ubuntu is 10.04.1, Ubuntu Netbook Edition is still 10.04 and won't work with wubi 10.4.1. I found wubi version 10.4 on [URL] and used that, install worked.

On UNE, for example a Firefox Window is opened in workspace 1. I'd like to have a new Firefox window on workspace 2. But when I switch to workspace 2 and hit the Firefox Icon in the left launcher panel, it only brings me back to the running instance of Firefox on the first workspace. So what is an easy way to have a second Firefox Window on the second workspace?

i am currently using ubuntu 10.10 desktop edition and i recently noticed the net book edition option in the login screen. i googled a bit on it an liked the screenshots. so decided to give it a try. i dunno what the problem is but after i login, i just get a plain screen ( no application panel or the side panel )but the options work.. i just don't see them on the screen. like when i click on the left top corner, i get the proper window and i can start apps from it.. i just cant see the panel or the side bar. and the other problem is that after any app is launched, i wont get the title bar also.. btw, here is a screenshot of the desktop. notice the bands at the top and the side. those are supposed to be my panels.. but no icons. if i click on the extreme top left i get the menu for selecting options like web music etc.
