Ubuntu :: What It Means To Have An Encrypted Drive
Apr 6, 2011
In disk usage analyser, I see that under home, I have my user folder which is about 50 GB. But for some reason, there is another equally big folder called "ecryptfs". When I installed ubuntu, I selected the encrypt hard drive option. How is this encryption when it seems like the space is just being replicated? And if I want to free up the 50 GB of space taken up by "ecryptfs", how do I do it?

I recently had a problem with an absolutely gobsmackingly huge .xsessions-error file growing in my /home partition (over 200 GB--the only reason it stopped growing was that there wasn't any room left). So, I deleted it, and then to see what problems had been causing the file to grow so huge, I rebooted the computer to regenerate it. Big mistake.Since then, I haven't been able to boot. The process hangs when it reaches the step of mounting the /home partition. Luckily, I have my install CD, so I was able to boot into that environment. First, I checked disk integrity--everything was just fine. Then, I tried booting into the liveCD environment. Jackpot! It reports that the bus between /dev/sda6 and itself is timing out when I try to access the former home partition, but I can get into my / partition just fine.I have just edited my /etc/fstab file to *not* know about /dev/sda6, so hopefully it will boot properly (though of course without any access to the files on /home) soon. If this works, I will update. But, does anyone else at all know anything about this sort of problem and what I can do to fix it? Regenerating my /home partition on / merely postpones the problem and doesn't actually get me any of my files back.
UPDATE: Well, that didn't work. Actually, it sort of did, but not quite the way I wanted it to. I was indeed able to bypass mounting the /dev/sda6, but I was not able to boot into Xubuntu since the graphical log-in manager failed and none of the ttys started. The failure mode was, however, interesting. It did not merely fail, but instead flickered violently with a frequency of several seconds until I tried switching to one of the virtual terminals (C-M-!, if anyone is interested).

Ubuntu 10.04 (64)I have a second drive (currently mounted as /disk2).I want my home directory (/home/jb) to include this second disk as JUST a separate 'folder' accessible from my home area.want the data on the second disk to be encrypted, (just like my /home/jb folder is now).I would prefer to 'blend' the second drive into my existing setup.I'm looking for the safest way to achieve this, don't mind editing fstab etc. or getting my hands dirty on the cli.

I've installed Squeeze on a USB stick, but can't get it to boot. I've had this problem before and gave up last time. I installed on an encrypted LVM - here is the grub.cfg
#
# DO NOT EDIT THIS FILE
#
# It is automatically generated by /usr/sbin/grub-mkconfig using templates
# from /etc/grub.d and settings from /etc/default/grub
[Code]...
I added rootdelay=10 and switched root from hd1,1 to hd0,0 as suggested elsewhere. Still no go, i jsut get dumped into ramfs shell with an error message saying that /dev/mapper/crunchbang-root doesn't exist.

I am trying to have an encrypted drive auto-mounted once i log into Lucid.
I created the encrypted drive with the disk utility in administration menu
I also have the password remembered "forever" so when i am logged in i just click the icon for the drive on left panel and it mounts.
I am able to find the uuid and know what device is called sdd but i don`t know how to put it into fstab if that is possible?

I want to access my hard drive to copy over my old documents. So I boot into a LiveUSB, mount my ubuntu partition, and then cd to my home directory, but I can't open it. I get "permission denied." I encrypted my whole home directory and know the password, but how do I "decrypt" it or login as the partition's root so I can access the documents that way. I'm booted into the USB, but can't access the home directory. I get "You do not have the permissions necessary to view the contents of 'jake'".

I can't seem to get an encrypted partition to recognize a keyfile. It is a backup partition that I would like to keep unmounted until a cron-script runs once a week to backup my sensitive data. In order for the script to run without my assistance, I thought I'd use a keyfile to authorize the mount.
So far I've created a keyfile and have added it to the partition using "luksKeyAdd". It didn't really say it was successful, but when I do a luksdump, it shows that another key slot has been enabled, so I believe it worked. After that I created a /etc/crypttab file with the following:
Code:
backup_sdd1 /dev/sdd1 /root/backup luks
/dev/sdd1 being the backup partition, and /root/backup being the keyfile
After rebooting, I am still prompted for a password when trying to mount the encrypted partition (sdd1), and there is no device "/dev/mapper/backup_sdd1" created like I believe there should be. I haven't added any entries to fstab, as I don't want this partition to mount at boot.

I formatted the USB flash drive using Karmic's Format Disk utility (right-click on a volume, select "Format..."), and selected "Encrypted, compatible with Linux (FAT)" from the "Type" drop-down menu.It mounts correctly when I plug it in, and I can access the files just fine. When I unplug the Flash drive without using the 'Safely Remove Drive' option, the icon on my desktop changes its name to '2.0 GB Encrypted', instead of disappearing and unmounting like my unencrypted Flash drives do.
I would like to have encrypted Flash drive treated in the same way as my unencrypted Flash drives, which disappear and unmount when unplugged, even if the 'Remove Safely' menu option isn't used. What can I do to accomplish this?NOTES:When I plug the encrypted Flash drive in, the following line shows up in the output of 'mount'. 'secure' is the name I gave the disk during the format process:
Code:
/dev/mapper/devkit-disks-luks-uuid-302db16c-c6e2-4dd9-a259-436437c76475-uid1005 on /media/secure type vfat

I have two questions regarding auto mount function of Truecrypt. First question:
I want to automatically mount my flash drive encrypted by Truecrypt using a keyfile whenever I plug the drive. How can I do this? I use Ubuntu 10.10.
Second question:
As I do not know the answer of my first question, I currently use following command in a startup script to mount my encrypted flash drive automatically at every system start-up.
Quote:
/usr/bin/truecrypt -k ~/keyfile --auto-mount=favorites
My problem with this method is, Truecrypt always search for the drive in the same path saved in favorite drives list, e.g. /dev/sdb1. However sometimes there are more than one flash drive plugged to my computer and my encrypted drive's path changes. In such cases Truecrypt cannot mount my encrypted drive because it cannot find the drive in its path.
As a workaround I tried "auto-mount=devices" parameter. It is slow because it checks every mounted drive, and some of them external hard disk big in size. Moreover it does not recognize any mount point parameter. I'd like to mount the drive to the same mount point every time.
Quote:
/usr/bin/truecrypt -t --auto-mount=devices -p "" -k ~/keyfile /media/MyMountPoint
The command above mounts the drive however it is slow and to the destination of "/media/treucrypt1".

I am trying to change the splash screen (Lucid 10.4) on an encrypted drive (cryptpo LUKS)
I've used to gimp to modify the png files in /lib/plymouth/themes/ubuntu-logo (both ubuntu_logo.png and ubuntu_logo16.pgn).
These changes show up when the machine is shutting down, but not when it boots (I get the same Ubuntu splash screen that allows me to enter the encryption password). I'm guessing because I'm using an encrypted drive that the plymouth theme and images are stored in an encrypted partition ....maybe /dev/sda1?
Could someone confirm this, or suggest how to change the splash screen for 10.4 if using drive encryption?

My laptop has only Debian on it. Except for /boot, the entire hard drive is a giant encrypted LVM partition. It takes Clonezilla 13 hours to back up to a USB hard drive without verification, long enough to make sure backups aren't done much. Is there some way to make an encrypted bare-metal backup of only what is used (except swap) instead of every sector? Backing up across the LAN would be ok.

I installed Debian 8 Jessie with full disk encryption and chose to have everything on the same partition. After install, I notice that my 8GB laptop has a 16GB swap. Is there a way to reduce the swap to 8GB (or maybe 4) whilst not affecting the encryption?
I have a 1TB HDD so space is not an issue but I dislike such waste. The setup used LVM.

I want to move my old system to a new drive. Currently I have Debian installed with following configuration:
I have an encrypted system where everything is encrypted except /boot. Currently I've /boot and / installed on a 16 GB mSata SSD and /home on a regulard HDD. I've got a 500GB SSD for Christmas and want to move the whole system to the new SSD.
I just wanted to ask if I've got the process required to to this down:
1. backup root-directory (/) without and /boot /home using tar keeping file-permissions and owners to ext. hard drive
2. backup /boot and /home separately using the same method
2. replace HDD with SSD remove mSATA SDD.
3. boot via live-usb
4. create appropriate volume groups, partitions, setup encryption etc.
5. extract backups to appropriate partitions
6. chroot to old /.
7. edit fstab
8. reinstall grub
9. create new init ram img.
I'm pretty sure I've got steps 1.-6. down but I'm very shaky on what to do next.

I am looking for a guide for Fedora 13 that tells me how to:
1. Create an encrypted partition on an an external USB hard drive
2. Tells me how to setup Fedora to ask me for the passphrase when I plug in the drive
3. Automounts the hard drive to a set location
The guide should deal with the situation that the computer can mount without declaring the external hard drive is not there. At present my attempt at mounting my Samsung Story USB2 hard drives does not meet criteria 2 and 3.

Two machines -- both 64-bit, both the latest Truecrypt installed, one Windows, one Linux. I created encrypted pendrive (using partition mode; not file-partition on regular partition) with FAT system on it. I copied several files/directories there -- using Windows. Then I unmounted it, mounted in Linux, but when I checked if everything is OK, it appeared that only the highest level of file hierarchy is visible -- i.e. only files and directories at mount point. Directories are seen as empty (in fact they are NOT empty). When I unmount pendrive and mount it again on Windows, all files/subdirectories are visible again. It is not an issue with older version of TC on Linux, because the version is the same. The question: how to make files in subdirectories visible on Linux?

Recently set up root encryption with a couple of LVM volumes inside one LUKS volume, and I am just a little confused as to how I would go about getting it to automatically unlock using a keyfile stored on a USB flash drive, I presume I would have to put the drive in the fstab inside my initramfs (if there is one), and add a hook for USB device support.
But I digress, essentially, I want to know what I have to do to enable my LUKS volume (containing all of my partitions sans /boot) to unlock using a keyfile stored on a USB flash drive, rather than a manually entered passphrase.

I installed Ubuntu 10.10 64 on my laptop with the entire 500gb setup as encrypted LVM. This has worked well for several months with no problems. During this time i have been backing up the data to an external usb drive (1tb) on a regular basis. The usb drive was not encrypted. So, I thought it would be a good idea to encrypt the backup drive too. I wiped out the backup drive and set it up as one large encrypted lvm and mbr. This seemed to work fine but immediately afterwards I decided to erase that and set it up as encrypted lvm guid instead of mbr. I couldn't delete it while logged into my desktop so i decided to do it from a bootable gparted usb stick. In gparted i erased the 1TB backup drive once again and planned on setting it up the way I wanted once I was logged back into my ubuntu desktop. Now I cant boot into my desktop with the following errors:
cryptsetup: evms_activate is not available b0d) does not begin with /dev/mapper/
Then after waiting for a few minutes I get an error followed by (initramfs)
When booting from a live version of ubuntu the 250MB boot patition is recognized and 500 partion is there but it is labeled as empty/unused.
Also, I did choose to use the exact same passphrase as what is used on the main bootable drive when I set up the encrypted partition on the external 1TB drive.

I wanted to upgrade my Fedora 9 laptop to Fedora 10. I executed this:
Code:
yum -y install preupgrade
preupgrade
It downloaded 1.1G of RPMs and asked me to reboot. Now when I boot, I am prompted for my pass phrase to unencrypt my /home partition on SDA4, but it can't be mounted. Same when I boot from a CD. Is there anything I can do to fix my encrypted drive? Is there a chance I'm just missing a driver? Has anyone else upgraded with preupgrade and an encrypted drive?
