Ubuntu :: User Account Settings And Permissions?
May 8, 2011
I'd like to set up my PC so that it has one "master account" for system settings, desktop appearance, etc. And then I'd like other user accounts that read these settings so if I change the settings on the master account, those accounts follow the new settings but cannot change them. But at the same time, these accounts cannot be allowed to read to master account's personal files (documents, music, etc.) Each account would be restricted to its own home directory, as expected.
Is there any way to set something like this up or am I dreaming of the impossible?

I recently installed likewise 6.0 on a Ubuntu 10.04 box and I was able to login as a Domain user. However my domain user account is not showing on the "User Settings" panel (I can only see locally created accounts). And if try to change login shell by typing "chsh", then it tells me user "DOMAINusername" does not exist in /etc/passwd.
Does anyone know a way around this?

When I reinstall my distro (MEPIS, for the last 2.5 years), making my new user account preserve all the old account's settings has always been a difficult and very messy process, especially if I have installed a new copy on another partition. (I'm doing that soon, so I have this copy as a backup until I have everything the way I want it on the new copy.) Most of my stuff gets saved, but not everything. The biggest problem is that, even if I select "preserve data in /home" in the MEPIS installer, my keyboard shortcuts become unusable (not completely erased) under odd circumstances. They're still listed in file /home/josh/kde/share/config/khotkeysrc, but they still can't be used, and I have to open hhotkeysrc and manually delete them and then reenter them in the menu editor (the K menu, by the way, gets completely overwritten).
I can't just overwrite the entire new user account with the old one; I've tried, and something goes wrong so that the new account can't be opened (probably because some important files are inaccessible--I can't tell which ones they become inaccessible).Anyway, is there a program that can preserve all the user account settings neatly for a new installation of the distro? I am supposing there is a program or at least a method, because I never hear others complaining about this problem. I probably don't know something I should know.

Is it possible "reset" all (X, GDM related) permissions/settings of one user? What would cause one specific user not to be able to log into anything via gdm/the login screen? After providing the proper password, the screen goes black and then jumps back to the login screen. No session alternative works, not even xterm or gnome failsafe. I can however log in via the console (Ctrl+Alt+F6, recovery etc). With another user I can log in via GDM just fine, and deleting and re-adding the "broken" user doesn't make any difference.
Some (maybe) relevent logs:
part of syslog:
Quote:
Dec 12 01:20:58 <specific user> pulseaudio[1358]: core-util.c: Home directory /etc/timidity not ours.
Dec 12 01:20:58 <specific user> pulseaudio[1358]: lock-autospawn.c: Cannot access autospawn lock.
[code]....

I have a problem with the Google search box top right corner in Konqueror, when entering search I recieve an error page "Unsupported Protocol" Google asks for ioslave or kioslave. Also when highlighting text on a page and right clicking with the mouse no search option is given. I created a new user and all works as it should for the new user. What is wrong with my user account? I have reset default values in Konqueror setup.

I have a user account which is required to run as part of the operating system and as a service. I am currently attempting to install my companies software on an Ubuntu desktop via wine just for the purpose of finding out if it's do-able.
Is there a way, in Ubuntu, for a user account to be given the local rights assignment to act as part of the operating system and to function as a service in the background?

I'm looking for the easiest or cleanest way to copy a user's settings to a new user's settings. I don't need to copy any files from the original user, but setting up a home directory would be great.
If it's done at the command line, that would be just fine. I'm very familiar with working at the command line.

Apache is run as www as is all the files/folders. People are uploading via FTP, scp, so the problem is if I chmod so everyone can read, then rsync as a user it works until new files are added which then my ; if rsync fails with a permission denied. Now I can add a chmod in the script so everyone can read, but since www can already read, I figured I would just change my script to use www. I added the ssh key to his authorized_keys file, but when I try to just ssh in I see this in the secure file;
server sshd[29539]: User www not allowed because account is locked
sshd[29539]: Failed none for invalid user www from ip port 54983 ssh2
Now I read a few places already saying I need to add a password to the account, etc. but before I jump and try all I read, 1st major one, will this now break apache? Will this affect any startup things, etc. and .... will that unlock that user for ssh in or is there another preferred method?

my computer recently ran out of disk space, and for whatever reason (presumably bad coding!) that caused Evolution to freak out and deny all knowledge of my email account.Fortunately, all the email is still in present in ~/.evolution/mail/imap/me@foo.com but I have no idea how to make Evolution realise that and let me load it again.

I work in a shared computing environment and the default setting is r-x for group and others; it's upto the users to change this. I can chmod and change the permissions for all the files. However any new files created all have the default permissions. Is there anyway to change that so that I don't have to chmod everytime or run chmod as a cronjob?

On my Ubuntu 11.04x64 server, I have service accounts running which do not log in and do not have home directories. These service accounts are responsible for running processes which are invoked as services. When these services created new files, I need them to be created with the permissions 664 (UMASK 002).I edited the /etc/profile umask setting to reflect this. I see that now my user account creates files which reflect this new umask setting, but the service accounts do not when I manually created files using their accounts (sudo -u serviceaccount touch newfile).

When I use ls -al to show files downloaded from internet,
-rw-rw-r-- 1 427 6011 7544 Jul 20 2006 INSTALL
-rw-rw-r-- 1 427 6011 4229 Dec 9 15:36 Makefile.am
-rw-rw-r-- 1 427 6011 27893 Dec 10 17:47 Makefile.in
I can see the owner and group ids are shown because there are no corresponding entries in /etc/passwd and /etc/group respectively. I don't know much about linux and dare not to edit these files, I wonder if somebody already knows whether linux would map the owner id of files coming from other computers to the account name in /etc/passwd and display them when necessary (for example, when using ls -al)?

I'm trying to create a user account for my children in Ubuntu 10.04
When creating their account, I have turned off the 'Connect to ethernet and wireless' option of the Advanced Settings.
However, when I log into their accounts, they still have full access to the internet through both the wireless and ethernet connections. Is this option for some other purpose?
Is there an alternate way to limit internet access for childrens' accounts in Ubuntu? (I'm used to MS Family Safety as a filter for internet access - is there an eqivalent for Ubuntu?)

This applies to users of 10.04 (64 bit), but I would like to hear from those running 10.04 (32 bit) and 9.10 (64 or 32 bit).Would you be good enough to answer this question: Do you have an enable scanner option (or a variation of that phrase) in (GOTO) System-Administration-Users & Groups- [Your Admin Account]- Advanced Settings- User Privileges? It would be immensely helpful of you if you could do this and post me your answer.

I have NTFS-protected directories under Windows. However under Linux, even though I'm not logged in as a Super-User, Ubuntu cheerfully mounts all NTFS partitions on this machine and EVERY computer on my home network. This gives my GUESTS complete access to all machines connected to my network: Nautilus -> Windows Network -> Workgroup -> Clicking on any computer Name gives access to windows' administrative shares C$, D$, etc. I've always known that Linux ignores Windows security, but... what is the solution?

Is there anyway to delete the home folder for that account. I can view the file but when I try to delete it is says I do not have apporite permisions to delete the file.
I removed the account and deleted the group but it still shows up when I type in the address /home/xmbc
Is there anyway I can delete this file. It also will not let me create any new user accounts is there any way I can fix these prolbems without totaly reinstalling the system.

I tried to add a samba user account on an Ubuntu machine called "video" like I had on another Ubuntu machine, but it's telling me it already exists. At one point I had added the user via terminal, but the user did not show up in system-config-samba (the popular samba gui a lot of people use). So now I'm trying to re-add him and it's not working. Likewise, if I use terminal to sudo smbpasswd -x video, it says failed to find an entry for that user.
As far as I can tell, the user doesn't exist - yet I can't add him because it "already exists."

Now I can't log into my root account all I get is a blank screen for a few seconds then I'm back at the log-in screen, the other account works fine.

So I was creating a backup user on my Ubuntu machine, and realized that there was already one there. I wanted to have a user account that only had permission to scp data archives to my backup directory. Is there already a mechanism in place via this backup user to do just that? Or does this account have other uses and should be left alone?
