Ubuntu :: Unable To Boot After Regular - Security Updates - Installed
Apr 22, 2011
A few weeks ago I did a WUBI 10.04 LTS install on a Windows XP desktop that went perfect. System ran great until this morning. I was prompted to install "Security Updates", which I allowed the system to do, but thereafter was unable to boot. What happens is at the point of selecting either Windows or Ubuntu for booting, and I choose Ubuntu, the computer goes right back into a re-boot process and brings me back to the Windows/Ubuntu boot selection prompt. It doesn't even bring me into the secondary boot level of asking which type of Ubuntu boot I want (generic, etc.). Is there a solution for this problem besides reinstalling Ubuntu?
I made a Desktop User account. When I went on that account, it allowed me to execute sudo as if I was an administrator. I don't know what might be causing this. I do have ufw set up and blocking incoming connections. Do you guys know what might be at the root of this? Also, when I used sudo from the user account (which I shouldn't have been able to do), I provided the password for my admin account.
Twice this week I've tried to download " Important security updates". Each time the response is:
W: Failed to fetch http://us.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/...u9.5_amd64.deb 404 Not Found [IP: 91.189.88.30 80] W: Failed to fetch http://us.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/...u9.5_amd64.deb 404 Not Found [IP: 91.189.88.30 80]
I've got 10.4.1(rev190?) installed in what I guess is Wubi and have been running dual boot for a couple of weeks now. My other OS is XP. I recently ran the updater then shut the computer down for a week. I can't remember now if I had to restart to complete any updates or not but my laptop battery is fried so once I unplugged it after it completed shutdown all power was removed from the system for 9 days. Today I tried to boot Ubuntu and after I chose it from the boot menu it flashed some sort of message about WUBILDR really quick (I wasn't able to read it all) then went through its normal boot until the Ubuntu splash screen where one dot went red and the system hung.
I allowed it a good 15 minutes to see if it would unhang but no dice. It boots fine on XP. Any advice? I'm reading the Wubi Megathread right now but as I'm new to Ubuntu I figured I'd check to see if anyone else experienced these particular problems here, too. Right now I'm going to download the Ubuntu installer to a disk to try some of the Megathread troubleshooting.
I have a system running Ubuntu that hasn't been updated in a few weeks, and now has a hundred-some updates pending. Is there any benefit to installing all those updates now, rather than just waiting a day or two and then doing the full update to v11.04?
I am using Fedora 13 and I have one program (wine) that I need to start grabbing for the updates-testing repo instead of the default repositories in order to get newer versions. I think I can figure out how to add that repository, but I need to know if there are any others I need to disable or any other changes I need to make to my system so that I don't confuse my set up with conflicting updates.
Also, is there anything special I need to do to be sure that only that one program is grabbed from the testing repo when I run regular updates?
I have been using Opensuse 11.4 for the past 3 months and for the past 2 weeks the system freezes regularly due to multiple errors.Iam using Kernel 2.6.27.6-0.7-desktop under KDE4 with regular updates
Errors 1 & 2 occured during Normal mode 1) Aug 28 15:11:52 linux kernel: [ 1153.000036] render error detected, EIR: 0x00000010 Aug 28 15:11:52 linux kernel: [ 1153.000036] [drm:i915_report_and_clear_eir] *ERROR* EIR stuck: 0x00000010, masking
My self-built PC had a BT wireless adaptor in it which worked, albeit after a bit of a faff, with Ubuntu 10.10 in connecting to my BT HomeHub2.
When I came to use it last week it would not connect. I'd not changed any hardware but I had been applying regular updates via Update Manager.
Bearing in mind the "faff" factor, I decided to try a different (Edimax) wireless card but got the same result. Upgrading to 11.04 has made no difference either.
It does *try* to connect but fails, so I think the card is installed correctly. I've also tried a full reset on the HomeHub and the setup works fine with W7.
So, it is my understanding that Ubuntu's automatic updates do not install ANY updates that are not "important security updates." For example, it did not upgrade me to Firefox 4 automatically; I had to do it myself (Don't all new browser versions usually contain new security features/patches? Oh well...That is a separate question entirely).
ANYWAY, is there some way to get the latest stable versions of all of my open-source software automatically (or at least all at once, on command), instead of just security updates? It seems silly to have to install new versions for every program manually.
Also, related/side question: Now that I have installed Firefox 4 myself (via apt-get by adding the mozilla-stable PPA), will I stop getting security updates for Firefox through the standard Ubuntu update manager?
Actually, a really thorough explanation of the whole automatic update system (or a link to one) would be great too.
So yesterday I receive a copy of the SANS @RISK security vulnerability newsletter, and, lo and behold, Mozilla's Firefox and Thunderbird are on it yet again. (Yeah, I know, shocking, isn't it?)So I quickly check what versions I have installed. Yup: Vulnerable.I check whether updates are available. These are pretty serious "remote code execution" vulnerabilities and the status is "vendor confirmed, updates available." So why isn't my 9.10 desktop's update manager telling me updates are available?
I'm new to server admin, so my question is based on what may be a bad assumption. With a server, my assumption is "if it ain't broke, don't fix it". In other words, I'm not really interested in upgrading the software to the latest and greatest if I already have stuff working on the server.
However, the one place where I DO want to constantly have upgrades is for security patches. How do I apply security updates to Ubuntu Server... and ONLY security updates?
With an Ubuntu 10.10 upgraded from 10.04, under Software Sources, Updates, there is a radio button marked "Install security updates without confirmation." I have this radio button marked, but still get "Important security updates" almost daily in my update manager. I don't remember this feature actually ever working.
I had mandriva 2009 installed in my system everything was fine till I installed a new graphics card xfx nvidia gts250. My motherboard in Intel 946giz. I was able to change it to lenny with got installed perfectly but when I boot in linux it goes into an infinite loop giving me call trace and all I tried sabayon 4 and suse11. 1 live cds but was not able to boot into their live cd environment.
I've set up a user account for friends & colleagues that does NOT require a login password. Unfortunately, in this OS some things don't work unless you login -- sudo Must regular users have AND use Root's password?
Does anyone know when we'll see Firefox 3.0.19 packaged for 8.04 LTS? I'm still stuck at 3.0.18. And what will happen after this? My understanding is that after .19 Mozilla is dropping support for FF 3.0.
Upgrade policies not withstanding, I find it rather annoying when an "LTS" release doesn't keep up with the most security-critical package in the distro, the browser. 8.04 LTS should have moved to FF 3.5+ a *long* time ago. Now it seems it will be forced to do so or else just forget about browser updates for the last year of 8.04?
I know I can install the current Firefox with ubuntuzilla, I just keep wishing Ubuntu would do it for me.
I suspect this is a 'new Grub' problem. I installed OpenSuse 11.2 from DVD into one (sda10) of several partitions (the others containing other operating systems):-
/dev/sda1 * 1 63 506016 6 FAT16 /dev/sda2 64 4865 38572065 5 Extended /dev/sda5 64 960 7205121 7 HPFS/NTFS /dev/sda6 961 1859 7221186 83 Linux /dev/sda7 1860 2759 7229218+ 83 Linux /dev/sda8 2760 3026 2144646 82 Linux swap / Solaris /dev/sda9 3027 3924 7213153+ 83 Linux /dev/sda10 3925 4865 7558551 83 Linux
I use NT Boot Loader for the multi-booting on the basis of chain-loading the boot sector of Linux partitions. (It is not destroyed by MS re-installations; and is actually very easy to use). I also have an older Grub shell boot floppy which can do likewise:- root (hd0,x)chainloader +1 boot FWIW I found the disc partition & boot loader parts of the installation a nightmare. Difficult to know what it is going to do; and I am sure it *did* fiddle with parts I asked it to avoid. Horribly, it did *not* make me a dedicated Suse boot floppy like I checked. (This is always the safest boot option for a new install: it leaves the present boot system intact, and provides an independant way of loading your latest. You can refine things later). I had also checked to have the boot sector on the *root partition*.
I have never been able to get into the Suse. NT Loader does not like the partition boot sector. Nor does (an older) Grub from its boot floppy. I have tried the DVD in 'system repair' mode, when it finds things wrong and corrects them, same next time... It offers a way of directly booting a selected system; that did not work.
Any suggestions? I can provide more precise error msgs, but it is tedious; and system repair from DVD dicey. I feel that *the partition boot sector is not being properly set up*.And I want to be able to make a dedicated boot floppy; how? I have an identical problem with Ubuntu, which makes me think it is related to the 'new' Grub.
I have a problem to mount my cdrom as a regular user. After inserting a cd, I receive this error message:"Error mounting: mount exited with exit code 1: helper failed with:mount: must be superuser to use mount" After mounting the cdrom as superuser with "sudo mount /media/cdrom".I can access the cd also as regular user. This behavior is inconvenient and I would like to be able to mount the cdrom as user.Honestly, I do not have the experience to tell if this should be fine or not. Do you have any advice for me to fix this problem? I am running Ubuntu 9.10 with a 2.6.32-02063209-generic kernel.
I have a problem: My Fedora runs slowly. Any activity that is even remotely graphics-heavy (such as scrolling up and down in a web browser) lags massively. I suspect this is caused by my video card driver.
I am running Fedora 13 and KDE 4.5.3 on a 64-bit machine. My video card is an ATI Radeon HD5750. I am using the Catalyst 10.9 "hotfix", because I am unable to install the regular driver, as I described in this thread.
Hey all! For the past week or so, I've had a losing battle with the Update Manager. I try to install my updates, but... well this screenshot should describe my explanation. Does anyone have any ideas as to how I could get my updates installed?
Is there a way I can switch from my installed "regular" Ubuntu to Lubuntu? (BTW I don't see where I can change "Jaunty" to "Maverick" in my profile; it's been a while since my last visit )
I have something like the following in my expect script:
Code:
interact { -nobuffer -re {^s } {
[code]....
I have put the "^" anchor to match only those pattern that does not have anything before "s" e.g.
1.when I type "s" followed by "enter" key it should match.
2.if I type something like "chess" followed by "enter" key it shouldn't match. the second case is also being matched by the regular expression I have in my code.
I noticed this today for the second or third time since getting 10.04: all my machines are installing security updates automatically, despite the fact that KPackageKit is set to 'only notify about available updates.'
Am I just being stupid, missing a setting somewhere, or is this a bug? Aside from the fact that I like to know what's being installed, I often use my laptop on satellite or other bandwidth-metered connections (as was the case when it happened today), and I don't want the OS to start dictating how much I owe my ISP at the end of the month!
I'm running Ubuntu 10.04, and I had some trouble with an old Drupal installation, so I ran the script below in an effort to revert PHP back to version 5.2. The script below didn't work for me, and now Update Manager gives me the message "Not all updates can be installed", presumably because the script changed the repository for some of the software from lucid to karmic.Script which "broke" Update Manager:Quote:

I am a recent convert to Ubuntu and have the Ubuntu 10.10 version installed on my computer. All has been going on well until I installed FreePops. Since then, when I check for updates through the Update Manager, it shows that it's searching for updates but then it brings up a pop up stating the following "Failed to download repository information" and under this the following is mentioned "W:Failed to fetch [URL], E:Some index files failed to download, they have been ignored, or old ones used instead."I have removed FreePops from Synaptic Package Manager but the above mentioned error still appears and updates cannot be installed. I have rebooted my computer also and performed the updates but the error still appears.
Today when I started my computer I got an error from the updater saying the Following Ubuntu 10.10 Not all updates can be installed Run a part upgrade to install as many as possible.
This can be caused by: *A earlier update that hasn't been complete *Problem with parts of the installed software *In offical program packages that havent been "?Something?" By ubuntu *Common changes in a early version of ubuntu
So what should I do? Just take Part update? And do you know what may be the cause of this. Only thing I installed lately was a "game" from the ubuntu Program central and I haven't run it and I restarted my computer 1 time before this when having it installed.
I updated my Ubuntu 10.04 on Dell 1330 and on the next boot it failed. I get a series of messages, the main point seems to be that it can't find the files it needs to mount.I tried booting from the live cd I used to install 10.04, but it can't boot either due to wrong user id error and maybe trying to boot from wrong kernel? At this point I am willing to just wipe the hard drive and do a fresh install but how to do that if I can't run the install cd?Or is there a way from initramfs to solve this?I tried mount /dev/sda1/mnt but it says cannot read /etc/fstab no such file.libdevmapper
