View 5 RepliesI have Ubuntu 9.10 installed on my laptop.
every time I save some files in my desktop a sign of "lock"
is appeared attached to the file's icon.
Then by using this command I can remove it:
"chown pc *"
What can I do if I want not to see that sign (the sign of a lock)
anymore?
When i connect windows server 2003 from ubuntu these error displayed .When i installing the tsclient, by executing these following command from a Terminal window:
sudo apt-get install tsclient
When i run these command the following error displayed.
E: Could not get lock /var/lib/dpkg/lock - open (11 Resource temporarily unavailable)
E: Unable to lock the administration directory (/var/lib/dpkg/), is another process using it?
I have a HP Pavilion dv4 that is 4 months old. Yesterday it suddenly seemed to restart then once I logged in it turned off. When I tried to turn it on some of the lights came on and the caps lock and num lock started flashing. Since then I have not been able to get it to work correctly. It once seemed to turn on but died again after the login window.I tried to use my live cd but the same thing happened. It started loading once, but then shut down again. Every other time it stayed dead minus the lights
View 1 Replies View RelatedI recently installed Ubuntu 11.04 on an old Sony Vaio laptop. I was following some of the steps here..[url]
The step "Enable Full DVD Playback(Dual Layer DVD Support)" did not finish correctly doh and now I can't use 'sudo apt-get' for anything or the software center or using the 'Update Manager' does not work.
The update manger says it may be caused by an update not finishing correctly which sounds correct as explained above. The apt-get command gives me back the following....'Could not get lock /var/lib/dpkg/lock resource temporarily unavailable' 'unable to lock administration directory /var/lib/dpkg is another process using it?'
I tried the obvious restart but that hasn't worked.
my problem is the terminal:
E: Could not open lock file /var/lib/dpkg/lock - open (13: Permission denied)
E: Unable to lock the administration directory (/var/lib/dpkg/) , are you root?
I have pidgin2.5.2. I want to install pidgin2.6.6.How can I do that?E: Could not get lock /var/lib/dpkg/lock - open (11 Resource temporarily unavailable)E: Unable to lock the administration directory (/var/lib/dpkg/), is another process using it?
View 1 Replies View RelatedThere is a very strange problem I've been having. When I enable either Caps Lock or Num Lock the media controls on my keyboard cease to work. I have Googled this one to death but found nothing. This problem existed in Xubuntu 9.10 and now still exists in Xubuntu 10.04. The keyboard I use is a Logitech Elite Keyboard. I would love to be able to use the Caps Lock and Num Lock without the worry that I am disabling the media controls
View 4 Replies View RelatedI have just burned the latest CD using infraRecorder, as per the instructions on this site, however when I boot from this CD, it spends about 5 minutes moving the red balls across my screen, then all of the sudden it just freezes, and my caps and scroll lock lights start to blink. I've had a look in the forums already but there's nothing about this happening on Boot of the live CD.
View 6 Replies View RelatedI'm wondering why the num lock doesn't work in Ubuntu anymore? When you press the "num lock" key, you're supposed to be able to input the numbers along with + - * / and decimal point. When I press num lock and try typing numbers, nothing happens.
I've done a google search and this is a well known problem that nobody has fixed. In Windows it's never a problem.
Seems such a shame that the great Ubuntu and Linux are so good for stability and speed, but can't get a simple num lock working.
I am having a very annoying problem with my laptop.I am experiencing many freezes. When my laptop freezes, it shows the caps lock and scroll lock lights blinking. At first I thought it was a problem with flash (here is original thread: URL... )In the original thread, I thought the freeze's were being caused by the flashplayer, but it apparently isn't the case. The last time I experienced the freeze, I was playing around with the compiz desktop effects.

View 2 Replies View RelatedI am setting up a lubuntu nas with all of my music, movies, etc on it. I want to give my kids access to my mp3 directory, so I can move all of the kid appropiate music into the root of my mp3 dir, in the same order I have all of my music sorted. Under the Music folder, I have them sorted, in folders, by letter. So A, B, C, D, etc... Now, in those folders are the respective artists. So where there may be something approipate in the P folder (say, Paramore), there is something inapproipate (say, Pantera)Now, when the kids go to the P folder, I don't want them to even see the Pantera folder. I just want them to see the Paramore folder. I tried a test using chmod 711 and chmod 700 on a directory with a test user, and the user can't access the directory, but can still see it
View 3 Replies View RelatedThe Problem was I wanted to open my /home/Pictures folder and have it display the contents of the My Pictures folder in my windows partition. This way I could have ubuntu and xp using the same set of music files, picture files, etc. I was having a very hard time understanding how to get from here to there because I'm such a newbie. However I have discovered how to do it and I wanted to post it, in hopes it will make things easier for other newbies. This allows me to see every TYPE of document in /dev/sda8/Media (windows My Documents folder) without having to see any of the folders (My Music, My Pictures, etc).
View 1 Replies View RelatedCan I change the Caps Lock key to Control and still keep the on/off nature of Caps Lock? I've checked into using xmodmap and seem to have hit a dead end. Many people want to swap them, but they also want to swap the way they work. I'd rather keep my new Control key as an on/off switch for Control.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI have experienced that the button in my main menu "Lock Screen" does nothing, so I can not lock my screen. What could be the problem? Is there any command in terminal what I could write, so I can see is there an error output or something?
I am using Ubuntu 9.10, GNOME.
I'm trying to use 'gnome-screensaver-command --lock' to lock my computer so that when my girl is on it I can **** her off
I can run the command from the terminal and it works just fine, but when I ssh into my computer and try to do it, I get the error
Code:
** Message: Failed to connect to the D-BUS daemon: /bin/dbus-launch terminated abnormally with the following error: Autolaunch error: X11 initialization failed. It'd be nice to be able to lock my screen from wherever.
Every once in a while I have noticed in the the morning that the computer is hard locked, meaning what ever was on the screen is still there (or just blank for screen saver), the machine is inaccessible over the network, and there is no kernel panic message in the logs.
This last time around my brother was logged in and he had the screen saver turned off, so I could see the exact time the clock stopped updating, and it read 7:00am. The var/log/messages log lists its last mark at 6:59:29.
A thought came to my mind the other month to check power stability because both my router and my network switch had a history of doing odd things even though I was using a line conditioner. After replacing the line conditioner with an APC Back-UPS XS 1500, both the network switch and the router have been perfectly behaved, but after a few weeks of continuous up time my Ubuntu system hard locked again and I don't know why.
Here are some hardware details:

View 1 Replies View RelatedSometimes after I enter my password after the screensaver has locked the screen, it will not take my password (even though entered correctly). It seems to lock up. After about 2 mins it says something about a time-out (wish I could do screencaps). Then it will reset and have a gray window the same size as the password input window but on the upper portion of the screen, and a password entry window as normal, but in the lower part of the screen. This time, it accepts the password and logs me in.This is a 2-part post.First, how to bypass having to wait for the timeout (for whatever is timing out). The second is to see if anyone knows an answer to the problem and a fix. After it freezes, hold CTRL-ALT and tap F1.This will taking you to a virtual terminal. Log in with your username and password. Then type:
Code:
$ pkill screensa
This will match gnome-screensaver and kill the program that is frozen. You then need to type
[code]....
I've been facing this problem of locking up files, I've three users in my system, I can't lock a folder but just can hide it by appending . in front of file. Is there any tool/software in linux to lock a file, so other users cannot even open/see. I tried with chmod options but didn't work?

View 1 Replies View Relatedi tried to make a recommendation ( ups that link ain't comes from me - i only looked for a word in a dictionary ) about traveling around with a laptop. i talking about my own experinace ( sitting in a train go to dinner - chain my laptop but - DVD-drive?? ) for GUI user i think it will be a nice option in the screensaver setup to lock the CD/DVD drive and thus should be very easy to implement by the "eject" command. just have another buttom "lock/unlock" the drive in the menue. think it's usefull and easy to implement.
--> ecject -i 1 / 0. i use this on my sony - works. i know it possible to bypass this - but this will take some much more time.
