Ubuntu :: Set Variable For Script To Run With Sudo

I have a script that backs up my computer that must be run like this:

sudo /home/bjorn/script.sh
However, I need to be able to change the ip it backs up to. I used to do this by rewriting the script when the ip changed, but I now have like 10 different scripts. So, it would be nice to be able to set a variable and then run my script. I used $bkup_ip in the place of all the old ip s in the script. However, it seems like if I set the variable with export, and then run the script with sudo the variable is empty. How can I set the variable so that it is available for the script?

I'm having a strange issue with the PATH variable when running the command 'sudo su'. When executing this command the PATH variable changes. No problems there, but it changes to:

Looking at this, there are two weird entries (//sbin and //bin) which should both start '/usr' instead. I'm not sure how I've managed to change this, or how a piece of software I'm using has done it (more likely it was me I expect), but could anyone suggest which file to look in to correct it? If it makes a difference the machine is running CentOS 5.

I've installed rubygems on ubuntu, but it has a known issue that the rubygems' bin/ directory is not in the PATH. I know about exporting the PATH variable, and adding it to .bashrc, but I'd like to configure it so that every user has it on his PATH, even if he tries to run it with sudo. Where should I export the PATH variable then?

I'm trying to read content of file to variable and use this variable in for loop. The problem is, when I have c++ comment style in file - /*. Spaces in line are also interpreted as separated lines.

Changing $files to "$files" eliminate these problems but causes that whole content of variable is treated as one string (one execution of loop).

my script has a variable which comes in the form +00.00 +0.00 -00.00 or -0.00 (the numbers can be any in that form) for any that have a + symbol I need to remove the +, but if it has a - symbol it needs to stay.
i need to make a new variable with the string from the old variable btut without any plus sign. I have tried a lot of different ways with no success, each thing I tried either left the + or removed the entire string. I think this should work but doesn't
foo=+12.40
bar=${foo#+}

how I can search within a variable and assign the results to a new variable. I'll use the following as an example -
cars="Audi BMW Cadillac Chevy Dodge Ferrari Ford Mercedes"
list=`echo ${cars} | egrep -o '<A?+|<C+'`
with the echo command I get the following output assigned to list -
A
C
C
What I'd like to get for output is -
Audi
Cadillac
Chevy
how I could do this regardless of upper/lower case letters?

explain the difference between these two commands. I'm currently reading about changing your mac address and both of these commands show up a lot. They sound like the same thing to me. Is one better than the other, or do you need to use both to change your mac address?

A day ago I finally got around to upgrading the PackageKit installation that had been sitting for a week and a half, so I found a new upgrade for sudo available - the one that gives the sudoreplay command, I forget which version number it is exactly. When I try to use the sudo command I get this notice in my terminal:Code:Can't open /var/db/sudo/me/1: Permission deniedI didn't get it before. What do I have to do to make it open? I'm using SELinux in enforcing mode if that helps.

I have read a lot of questions from people wanting to take Debian (or some other distribution) and make its sudo command act more like the way Ubuntu's sudo does. I want to do the exact opposite, I want to make Ubuntu's sudo command act more like the sudo command from another distribution. ie I want there to be one root password

can i use the value of one variable to generate a name for another variable? for example i want to use the counter from a "do while" loop to name and define a variable each time the loop executes. for example
objectnames1=`ls -a`
objectnames2=`ls -a`
etc.
i don't have a script yet but each time through the loop i intend to cd to a particular directory and then define a variable containing a list of each object in that directory as values. for the rest of the script to work, each variable generated has to be unique, and i can't think of a good way to accomplish this.
if using a value from one variable to name another isn't possible, can anyone think of a more elegant solution? i know limited syntax but i'm willing to read up...

I am trying to alter the character position of residue numbers above 999 in a pdb file.The following script is an attempt to:1) Get all unique pdb residue numbers (in column 5) using awk and assign it to a variable i.2) Loop through all the values in $i and if it is greater than 999, shift that number one character to the right using sed.However, the script only manages to alter the final residue numberCould anyone please advise how I can loop through all values in $i and shift it one character to the right?

It is my understanding that they do the same: they ask for my password (if I am allowed in /etc/sudoers), and give me a login shell as root.
Is there any difference between them?
sudo su -
sudo -i
Also, what's the difference between
sudo su
sudo -s
I think that they both ask for my password, and give me a shell with my old environment variables.

I am new to fedora (been using debian based distro's for the longest time). With the new release I decided to give FC13 (The kde 64 bit spin) a try. I told it to wipe my entire hdd and encrypt the partitions. The partition manager made a few LVM partitions which I assume are encrypted.
The problem I am having is that if I attempt to use an application that would normally need root access to run, I am not prompted to enter my root password. Instead, I am required to logout and log back in as root. Is there a way to make it so that FC13 will prompt me to enter in my root password so I do not need to log in and out? Or is there something Different I should have done during the install process? Also, what is the terminal equivalent of "sudo" in fedora, or is it still sudo/KDEsudo
I also have not used SE Linux before. Do I need to manually enforce the permissions for my applications and generate my own profiles for it, or is that done automatically?

Alright setting up a friends netbook, display has been a little iffy (slow. glxgears is giving like 100fps). Couple issues: xorg.conf doesn't exist (i know thats typically not an issue) and "sudo xorg -configure" and "sudo xorg --configure" both return "xorg command not found."
glxinfo say that its using Mesa for the software rasterizer and that the driver is from mesa. lspci says the VGA controller is from Intel. I'm thinking xorg is defaulting to vesa for drivers, but I need to know how to change that to the open source intel driver

i know that "sudo shutdown 0" will shutdown the system in 0 seconds. but when i run sudo shutdown now my system goes into the maintenance mode?? what is maintenance mode??

Also, how do I pass a variable to the script (rclick 10 will rightclick 10 times) (Found, so simple... $1)Lastly, can I force it to run on CPU2? CPU1 is completley locked up if I run this on it... Or can I make it use less cpu cycles?

I'm trying to set the environment variable. java_home and path.
I used the following instruction:
export JAVA_HOME=/usr/lib/jvm/java-6-sun-1.6.0.14
and to check :
echo "java_home=$JAVA_HOME"
and every thing is ok.
But since i close the terminal every thing is deleted.

So installing a programm is a problem. I like to install Aqualung. "/.configure" works. But "make" seems to be not installed. "checkinstall" seems to be not installed "sudo apt-get make" does not work. I have no internet connection with linux, because I have no idea how I install the network card. I guess this sudo command use internet? Is there another way to compile that program? (And just by the way, why must this be so difficult?

I'm trying to configure subclipse with JAVAHL for ganymede. I have everything installed and the right version of the JAVAHL.
I have seen that a lot of people uses java.library.path in the eclipse.ini file to set it up or just write a script for launching eclipse.
I have read about the .gnomerc file but i couldn't find it or create one and make it work. I'm using a 9.04 ubuntu.. is there anyway to configure an environment variable for gnome? What i want is just click on the shotcut and have it working, not having to run a script or all that stuff.
