Ubuntu :: Change Pidgin Default Spellcheck Language?

Apr 8, 2011

I use Pidgin for Gadu-Gadu protocol. I use it almost entirely to communicate with polish people. Each time I open new tab i need to manually change to "polish" from the context menu.

Is there a way to change the default spell check language without changing the environment language? I don't mind if it is some dirty hack or requires recompiling but since I'm not the only one trying to do that some simple tweak solution would be nice.

Ubuntu :: Support For Language While Keeping English As Language Used To Display Desktop?

Mar 5, 2011

I have some music in another language, but when I open the songs in Banshee, their song names just come up as weird characters (like μ).I went to [System --> Administration --> Language Support] and installed support for that language, but the songs still come up like μ. (But in Nautilus, their proper names show).

I know the solution is to change my whole system language to that language, but I don't want to do that, as I am not very fluent in it. Is there any way to enable support for that language while keeping English as the language used to display my desktop?

Ubuntu Servers :: Set Default Gateway For Internet / Vpn?

Jun 28, 2010

I'm having some difficulty with a internet/vpn setup. I have 3 network adapters on the server. 1x is used to connect it to the rest of the network 1x is used to provide internet (squid, dansguardian) 1x is used to connect to the vpn router

My interfaces file looks like this:

Code:
# This file describes the network interfaces available on your system
# and how to activate them. For more information, see interfaces(5).
# The loopback network interface
auto lo
iface lo inet loopback

[Code]...

The problem that I have is this: When the gateway on eth2 is set to 10.0.2.2 the VPN works 100% but there is no internet. When the gateway on eth2 is set to 192.168.0.6 there is internet but no VPN.

So what I want to do is, route all traffic that is supposed to go to 10.0.2.0/24 and 10.0.3.0/24 to eth2 and all internet traffic to eth0.

Ubuntu Servers :: All Ports Filtered By Default?

May 1, 2011

I just finished setting up a Natty box to act as my home router / home web server. I installed beta2 a few days before the final was out and updated all of the packages (also tried a dist-upgrade just in case ).

I performed the following setup:

- set up the webserver and sshd
- set up dhcp server and adressing
- set up rc.local to run rc.firewall with my filtering rules
- set the router live (rebooting it)

And that was basically it. Everything worked fine, except when I tried to open any of the sites that are hosted on the webserver from the outside world. It turned out that all of the ports on the external interface were blocked.

I decided to stop my firewall rules (flushing all rules) and then scan my box from the outside - still, all ports seemed to be filtered. I then decided to reboot the machine, disabling all mention of the rc.firewall script, but the ports were still filtered!

I then disabled apparmor and made sure ufw is disabled, but the ports are still filtered for the outside world. For the internal network they are not filtered.

Is there some other mechanism besides iptables rules that filteres packets?

Ubuntu Servers :: 10.04 Edition - No Open Ports By Default?

Dec 15, 2010

I've tried to set up a Hadoop cluster on a few freshly-installed 10.04 Server Edition machines and hit a problem. (I was able to set up the cluster using Desktop edition previously). The issue is that I can't connect to the service even though the Java process is running and listening on the port and there is no error in the logs. Anyway, I started to wonder if it was firewall issue so I googled it and found conflicting information.

1. "Ubuntu Server has no open ports by default" - [URL]
2. iptables shows different info. ufw is also disabled.

hadoopadmin@machine-1:~$ sudo iptables -L
[sudo] password for hadoopadmin:
Chain INPUT (policy ACCEPT)
target prot opt source destination

Chain FORWARD (policy ACCEPT)
target prot opt source destination

Chain OUTPUT (policy ACCEPT)
target prot opt source destination
hadoopadmin@machine-1:~$ sudo ufw status verbose
Status: inactive

I even tried to enable ufw and did "sudo ufw default allow incoming" but still no help. The only package I manually selected during installation is OpenSSH server.

Ubuntu Servers :: Add A Directory In Adition To Default 'www' To Apache2?

May 11, 2011

I have been searching the web and Ubuntu forums all day looking for an answer to what I initially thought would be a simple thing to do. I have set up a lamp server and started creating my network site, however was not long before I ran into an issue with fire fox not allowing me to access locally linked files that are shared on the network which works fine in IE. after several hours of trying to find a work around, I have been unsuccessful in creating a link that would work in both IE and FF.
so I got this bright idea see, to just make the website include the network shared content, unsharing them of course and simply adding them to my Apache server, well the more I read the more confusing it all became. do I use simlinks or do I create a server for each location/hard drive?
I really need a how to for big dummies on adding additional directories to Apache similar to adding virtual directors to IIS for windows.

Ubuntu Servers :: /etc/default/grub File Does Not Exist?

Jun 10, 2011

Due to a motherboard issue, I need to edit a parameter in the "etc/default/grub" file.

However, the problem is, that file doesn't exist.

Grub does seem to be installed, I can get into grub from the command line etc.

This is a fresh install of Ubuntu Server - 10.04.2 LTS

Brand new box, no previous installs of anything, no other operating systems etc.

Is there somewhere else that file could reside ? I tried find -name '*grub*' and got plenty of files, but none are the one that I need.

Is there someway to generate this file ?

I remember when installing from the CD it asking about grub, but I don't recall which option I chose, it was whichever one was the default.

This thing won't reboot right after power loss etc until I can edit that value... which at the moment seems to not exist....

Btw, I'm not a total linux noob but far from an expert, so I may need any answers "dumbed down" a bit.

EDIT (more info):

It seems that I have regular "grub" and not "grub2" installed... I'm assuming that is part of the problem ?

My version: grub-install (GNU GRUB 0.97)

Does this version of grub allow you to edit options etc ?

Specifically, what I need to do, is edit this value: GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT

I need to add "reboot=a" to this line.

Ubuntu Servers :: HOW TO Be In Two Places At Once A.k.a Ipredator Independent Of The Default Route

May 4, 2010

I have a home server running Lucid which basically runs our home lan, but I also wanted to be able to run transmission-daemon over an ipredator VPN connection completely independently of the ethernet port (as far as the application layer is concerned anyway). Most of the howtos for setting up VPN use the VPN as the default route, however I still wanted to run a webserver, dnsmasq etc, not to mention free bandwidth access to my ISP etc.

Thus, this howto. The ppp connection still tunnels through eth0, but as far everthing else is concerned my server has two independent network ports eth0 and ppp0 and applications use the default route via eth0 to our router unless explicitely directed down pppX. I assume that you already have transmission-daemon installed.
