Ubuntu Servers :: FTP Users Can Access Enitre Disk?

Apr 19, 2010

Quick question - I would like to know how to prevent users from accessing directories above the directory used for ftp. I'm running proftpd and I'm able to connect outside of my LAN, however all user accounts can click "Up to higher level directoy" and access everything, all the way up to the root directory. How can I make this unaccessable/not visible to users connecting to my server, allowing access only to the directories and subdirectories I have specified?

Ubuntu Servers :: Recommended Way To Set Up FTP Users That Access Same Files?

Mar 23, 2010

I have a server setup with all my web development stuff in /var/www and in several sub-folders within that. (each project having it's own folder)It works great with one FTP account. But recently I've been getting help on a projects from a buddy of mine that freelances, and have made him an FTP user account as well. All is fine, except for when he tries to edit a file and gets a permissions error.

Here's the issue, I don't want us to have the same FTP login, but all the files are currently owned by my user name. So, when he logs in to edit a file, he can't because I'm the owner, and the files are set to 744. Will I cause any harm by adding both users to the same group (www-data) and chmod'ing the files to 775 so that we can both access and modify the files?

Ubuntu Servers :: Win 7 Users Won't Be Able To Authenticate Unless Access Using IP Address

Sep 22, 2010

I've got a Samba server (CentOS)(I swear all my non-work boxes are Ubuntu) that has been working fine in our Active Directory environment for a long time, now that Windows 7 has been forced upon us, we've noticed that Win 7 users aren't able to authenticate to this server unless they access it using the IP address, e.g. \192.168.1.22. We've tried the different Windows 7 registry hacks and nothing makes a difference. We were advised to update Samba and we did to 3.3.8. However, this being a virtual machine, upgrading a clone of this machine did work, the configuration was identical, except the hostname

Ubuntu Servers :: LAMP Setup With Limited Access To Users

Mar 9, 2010

I'd like to setup an Ubuntu LAMP server, and provide limited access to it for our in-house web developers/designers. I'm not quite sure how to go about the permissions side of things. Which user/group should "own" the /var/www directory? Is it www-data?

How do I create user accounts (for our developers) that have access to the /var/www directory - do I create accounts then add them to the www-data group? Or should I make a special 'webdev' group and give it access somehow?

Ubuntu Servers :: Access Restricted To Select Computers Not Users

Apr 21, 2011

I want to configure a remote internet facing server as git server. I would like to restrict access to the server to a few systems (access is restricted to select computers, not users). I first thought of using ssh key, but the key can be copied to another system hence that alone is not sufficient. I am having a dynamic IP, so simple IP based firewall blocking is also not possible. I was thinking about the possibility of using both SSH Key and IP based access. Is it possible to update the firewall rule whenever my ip gets changed?

Ubuntu Servers :: Give Power Users Ability To Access All Of Their Folders Without Thrashing Security.

Feb 8, 2011

So, I am looking to implement an FTP server with Isolated Client accounts/directories where a client can only access what's in their directory. I also need to provide my internal user's (content managers) the ability to upload, delete, etc from all of the Client accounts. The simple part is creating the secure client accounts. It's a matter of changing DIR_MODE in adduser.conf to 700 or 770, creating a user, having the FTP server chroot them to their home directory, revoke/restrict shell/ssh access and maybe even slap on some ACL to prevent botched permissions. The hard part is figuring out how to give my power users the ability to access all of their folders without thrashing security.

My first thought was to put all of the client user-groups in a parent group and having my internal users inherit group permissions..but you can't have groups inside of groups. My second thought was to put all of the client users in the same group and prey that the FTP chroot is enough to keep them from poking around but then I have the problem of how do my internal users access other user directories if they are chrooted. Do I create a second server without chroot.do I create some weird nested homedir structure..I honestly have no idea how to satisfy both requirements (secure client accounts and privileged user accounts). I need my privileged users to authenticate against Active Directory via Likewise open, LDAP, etc and I don't care how the clients authenticate. Though, I would prefer to have both file and FTP-server level protection just to make sure no one can see the other client's data.

Ubuntu Servers :: HW RAID Disk Shows Up In Fstab But Not In /dev/disk/by-uuid?

Jun 28, 2010

I have an SiI hardware SATA RAID card, with two 500GB disks in mirrored RAID configuration. When I first plugged them in and set it up, things seemed to work ok, but on boot the raid controller told me that the RAID needed rebuilding, and it would happen automatically after POST. So I didn't worry about it, and the drive mounted fine, and it's been that way for years. I just went in and manually on-line rebuilt the RAID in the controller's BIOS, and now when I boot into Ubuntu, both disks show up in fdisk, but neither show up in /dev/disk/by-uuid. Am I missing something?

Ubuntu Servers :: Synchronizing Users Across Servers?

Oct 1, 2010

I wonder if other people have this problem. sometimes I need to duplicate most or all of a server from one machine to another. part where I most tend to have issues is with recreating the users. Sometimes the UIDs don't match up because of differences between the two systems, which gives funky results, like files owned by the wrong user.

Or, sometimes, I just need to create the same 10 users on x number of machines, and it's tedious to do this 10x times. Plus, then, if you need to change a password or delete a user, you have to do it x times.Any recommendations on how to centralize users/auth?

The only one in which I can access synaptic is user 1. My question is: is there a way I can access to synaptic from the other users? I thought that you picked an admin password and if you were on a non admin account, by typing it you could use synaptic.

Ubuntu Servers :: Webdav Access - When Connect From Nautilus - Says - Access Was Denied

Mar 26, 2010

I'm having a problem with my webdav share. I have a secure webdav folder that gets accessed via a non-standard port and requires basic authentication. I can connect and interact with it fine via cadaver. However, when I try to connect from nautilus, it says "Access was denied." To make it even stranger, sometimes I can click on the folder in nautilus (it still mounts) and access it. Sometimes not (just repeats the error message and won't show me the contents). I may not even un-mount it, but just look at other folder, then click it again and be able to access it, but again - only rarely.

I asked a friend to try connecting from his windows vista computer and it would not work. It would not work from my windows XP virtual computer either. However, it mounts and works just find from my work computer (also Windows XP).

So it seems to be a 50/50 chance that the drive will mount on any given computer/system and work. Do anyone know what the problem may be? I'm guessing user permissions, but I can't figure out what.

I've made sure the webdav folder is owned by www-data and www-data has read access to the password file as well.

When I try connecting from nautilus, I get this in the log file:

Code:

Here is one of the (many) sites I've tried looking at: [url]

Ubuntu :: Share A Folder With R/w Access By Two Local Users?

May 15, 2010

This seems like somewhat of a n00b question, but I'm kind of stumped and working on a half a dozen other things at the moment, so I thought I'd go ahead and ask it.

Is there a "correct" way to set up a shared folder between two local users using only EXT4 that will allow both users read & write access to everything in the folder?

Here's my scenario: My wife and I use the same computer. I want two separate user accounts (mine and hers), but I want ~/Music to point to the same location for both users so that I don't have to duplicate all of the files.

Too protect the innocent, I'll use Jack and Jill.

So say Jack downloads or rips an album:

"/home/jack/Music/Radiohead/Ok Computer"

I want Jill to be able to able to create a folder:

"/home/jill/Music/Radiohead/Hail To The Theif"

I know the basics of symlinks so I can get /home/jack/Music and /home/jill/Music to point to the same place. I also have Jack & Jill in the same group.

The problem I'm having with my test setup is when Jack creates "/home/jack/Radiohead", it is set up to where Jill can read, but not write. So she can play songs from Ok Computer, but if she wants to download Kid A, she has to go in and manually change the permissions on Radiohead first.

Also, while I might set up multiple directories this way, what I DON'T want is for Jack to be able to modify /home/jill/otherdir where otherdir is just a regular directory set up with default permissions.

Oh, and as an added bonus, it would be nice to set up another account (i.e. a "guest") with limited permissions that can read, but not write/modify.

Ubuntu :: Give Multiple Users Access To Drives?

If I'm logged out I'm obviously not using it. So why doesn't it show up? He has all privileges. Is there a way to make this work without having to unmount?

Ubuntu :: Samba Installation With Access To Guest Users

Debian :: Other Users Cannot Access Internet With FF

Mar 8, 2010

Debian 5.02 on an AMD 64. I removed iceweasel and installed Firefox. On my account, I can access the net ok from FF, but when I login as another user, I cannot get out.

During the iceweasel removal, I suddenly got dumped out. Trying to recover I ended up restarting the box. I then again went to the root and 'aptitude remove iceweasel' and it came back ok. Then I installed FF per [url]. This worked fine on my 32 bit laptop btw. I even added a guest acct and FF worked, but not so on my 64 bit box. Any ideas on where to go?

And the reason for FF was that some media was not playing with iceweasel as it was perhaps too old? I didn't think 3.06 was that old myself, but when I installed FF, the sites that weren't playing fired right up.
