Dec 5, 2010My master password is not saving any passwords in Firefox. I use this also in Windows XP, and all my passwords get saved. Furthermore, is this even a good idea to begin with? Can the passwords be stolen easily?

Jan 21, 2010I just tried out setting a master password for Firefox saved passwords and compared the old and new (before and after setting the master password) signons.sqlite files. Although passwords were not stored in plain text in either of the files, I did notice that the files were exactly the same. Am I wrong in assuming that setting the master password did not encrypt anything at all, or am I simply looking at the wrong file?

Today I started the computer, it's asking for them and doesn't accept the password so it's trapped in a loop. I changed the password, no luck, the username when starting seems to be different from the one when I'm changing it. Something like "Mart Di", versus "mart". Tried both with new and old passwords. Does the password expireor something?

When I try to edit my password via System>Administration>Users and Groups, it doesn't workI am able to edit my user settings. When I change my password I enter my old one and it accepts my new one. Jul 15, 2010I have a dual boot computer. The WindowsXP "side" has been infected with a rootkit virus. So far UBUNTU has not been affected to my knowledge. I have not yet been able to remove the virus from the WindowsXP "side". I am thinking of deleting the NTFS partition and have the computer fully dedicated to UBUNTU.
Now for my question. Is there a possibility that the virus resides in the MBR and that I need to "rebuild" the MBR to actually remove the virus? Even more extreme, should I totally re-install UBUNTU in the name of safety and precaution.
Server :: Local Master Browser Do Not Sync Their List With The Domain Master
Nov 13, 2009I'm managing a residential network. Each flat is its own subnet, and can only communicate with the other flats through a router (i.e. no broadcast). 95% of these 300 subnets only contains windows computers (from lambda users).
My final goal is to be able to browse the entire network from any computer.
I set up a samba server acting as a wins server, and every computer is aware of it because it is registered in the dhcp. So name resolution is working fine for everyone.
The same samba server is set to be the "Domain master browser":
workgroup = WORKGROUP
wins support = yes
prefered master = yes
local master = yes
domain master = yes
os level = 65
When I browse the network (using "net view" or "browstat view"), I can only see the servers which are in the same subnet as the domain master browser.
Now, when in a subnet the computers arrange themselves to find a "local master browser", the only visible computers are the one in that subnet.
What I don't understand is why all the local masters don't synchronize their lists with the domain master.
So, to sum up, every subnet get the following behaviour:
-if a local master is elected, the only visible computers are the one in the same subnet.
-if no local master is elected, the only visible computers are the one in the subnet of the domain master.
-if I add another samba, configured as a local master winning all elections, then the magic is working and the lists are synchronized.
What is expected:
-every computer can see all the computer from all the subnets.

Aug 3, 2010I already posted a topic similar to this concerning the Desktop OS version, but this deals with the Netbook because unlike the Desktop, the Netbook is less cooperative. Allow me to elaborate: Today (or rather yesterday since it's not after midnight where I am), I changed my password because I was hopelessly confounded about how to get my Wireless Network card up and running after it had been installed and I was allowing my dad to use it. This issue has since been resolved, however...
When I chose my password during the original installation, there was no mention of it being "too simple." This is where the Desktop OS and the Netbook OS differ. The desktop will let me change it in the terminal without any errors. The Netbook will not. When I've attempted to revert it back to the original, it will not let me do so in the User Profile or in the Terminal. The Passwords and Encryption Keys application also does not appear to help.
So now even after I've changed it to a different "complicated" password I am still prompted to insert two different passwords since I changed my user password but I am unable to change the password I input during the installation. A bit screwy methinks. This is extremely important. I'd like to know how to change the original installation password.
If I can't change the main password on my laptop then this is a serious potential security breach just waiting to happen (especially since it's on a laptop and I will be hauling it around with me) and I will most likely install a different OS if this isn't resolved --- It would be very unfortunate since I spent the whole day fixing it and I really enjoy the interface. Luckily I can live with this on my Desktop since I'm not going to be hauling it around with me everywhere when the school year starts.

Mar 31, 2010I have a load balancer with 2 web servers behind it. The web servers rsync with cloud storage to update their apache directories 1 time every hour. Apache is just running php pages that pull/push data to a DB so they dont need to be updated that often. However I need to figure out how to implement a Master/Master MySQL setup to have my web servers point to for the PHP stuff. I need to implement it without having a single point of failure. The Load balancers are useless for failover as they only detect availability based on Ping request. So putting a master/master setup behind a Load Balancer is out. what is the best way to setup the master/master mysql in a HA setup without the use of a load balancer provided by the host?

Occasionally a user will accidently run a job on the master node that runs out RAM/swaps then hanges up for a while.In /etc/security/limits.conf I have set memlock to 7.5GB (master has 8GB RAM) and maybe that is what lets the machine come back rather than hanging completely? Is this the right setting to physocally limit a single user from asking for more RAM than the system has and bringing down the system? Should I set this to 2GB or so or is there something else I can do??

Ubuntu :: Can Get The System Beep And The "master Sounds"?
Jul 24, 2010My sound was working fine until 2 days ago, but now it just doesn't. I can't play any songs, but I can get the system beep and the "master sounds" (if you run alsamixer it's the first column that I'm talking about). It seems that my sound card is recognized. I followed quite a few instruction I found online, but nothing seems to work. A couple more details:- If I go to System -> Preferences -> Sound, in the Input tab there is no device for my sound input.
- If I type "sudo aplay -l" in the terminal, I get the following:

Aug 27, 2010I had this great idea to try and change the UBUNTU password. So I took not so drastic effort..I went to System>Administration>Users and Groups. There I clicked on my login name.Clicked on Properties and used the Change Password Button to Change my login password. I did that. [I thought this is the way to change the login password]. After that as usual I tried to launch the Empathy! It started asking me about some Keyring password! I gave my new password and it worked. Now, the weirdness of the issue is that..

Ubuntu Security :: Getting A Users Password ?
Aug 30, 2010I need to be able to capture a users password when they login. I am well aware of the security issues with this and I'm ok with this.
We run a call center and I am working on migrating from windows to Kubuntu for the callers. It's policy that all callers must report their password to me, so I already know of everyone's password. There has to be some variable/script that I can "hack" to get the password they typed in to the login screen.
What I'm trying to do is that when a user logs in in for the first time, their profile is automatically created and set up. Setting up network drives, email, pidgin (which the password is stored in plain text anyway, so forget about security on that one), web apps, etc.
Trying to find information on How to capture a users password and all have been responded with the usual lecture on why you shouldn't do this. So I've heard it all before and I know of the risks. Like I said, I already have the callers password on file. If I could capture it, I wouldn't have to manually setup each profile every time we get a new caller, which is often since turnover is quite high in call centers.

I am not experimenting on a Production Server of NASA or any Security Concern Department. Friends, there is no harm in experimenting on your personal computer or on a test computer which is isolated from the production environment. Look at hackers! What do they do? If they don't know how security is breached then how would they come up with security measures?
If my question reads... "How to let any user perform Administrative Tasks on a Linux System irrespective of his/her privileges on that particular system?" then I would not get the right answers in the first place. They will say... "You are letting everyone destroy your system... are you sure you want to do that?" My question is: Why should we restrict ourselves from experimenting even if it sounds weird to other people?
I give you an example where it is desirable to let an unprivileged user perform certain tasks. You want to know if there are any employees in your office who are storing videos in their home directory and filling up the disk space to a great amount.
