Ubuntu :: LVM With Palimpsest Disk Utility
Apr 3, 2010I'm working on setting up a new NAS. I installed Karmic desktop on a 160 GB HD using the default settings.
Now I've added three 1TB drives and want to make them a RAID-5 array with LVM on that, and 1 ext4 partition. I want to use LVM so I can add drives and expand the array later.
So far I've been using Disk Utility (Palimpsest Disk Utility) and it's been great! A wonderful addition to Karmic! I got the RAID-5 array setup with no problems using disk utility. So now I have a 2000 GB raid-5 array setup in Disk Utility and I need to get LVM setup.
Problem is: I don't see any sign of LVM in Disk Utility. I've been googling all night and I can't find any documentation for setting up LVM in Disk Utility, just people saying that it's supported.
I tried installing the lvm2 package, rebooting, and then looking around again. No luck.
So, what am I missing? Should there be LVM options in Disk Utility? Where is it? Is there a better/easier way to configure lvm?

Dec 8, 2010I have a HDD with OS Win with three partitions NTFS.I installed Ubuntu 10.10 on new partition, and I left the old partitions on the disk, because there are a lot of my personal data.When I was looking for how to mount partitions on startup, I was fortuitously to Palimpsest Disk Utility selecting the checkbox on sda2 as a boot, and apply. But I saw that it was wrong and took the check back. And after this was damaged NTFS on the partition sda2. Windows shows the partition as RAW.

Jan 13, 2010this isn't really a security question, per se, so feel free to move. It is related to full disk LVM encryption though. Full disk didn't work for me with grub2 after running dd to a remote server, so I downgraded to grub1. No biggie. However, I have neither grub or grub2 as selected in Synaptic.Let's say I forget which I have installed. How would I determine what version of grub is installed at the moment. I'm assuming it's somehow installed on in the mbr but not on the OS. I didn't mean to do anything funky. Is that the normal setup? I'm deploying these systems to users and want to be able to troubleshoot issues in the future (hopefully that will not be needed!) grub --version does not work because it is not installed.

Feb 24, 2009I was trying to install Fedora 9 on my new laptop that came with Win XP. I have selected the option to wipe out all partition and create a default layout with the Encryption option selected. But that installation got stopped on the middle, therefore I have started the installation again. This time it asked for the encryption password as expected but don't know why, its not accepting my password. I am 100% sure that the password is correct but it is not allowing me to enter into the hard disk partition section.
My question is, how do I remove encryption from my hard disk? I don't need to preserve the data, I just need to use my hard disk again. Is there any boot CD that allow us to format encrypted disks without prompting for a password?
Fedora Security :: Disk Encryption With Remote Passphrase?
Jul 28, 2009I have currently a file server that runs on Fedora 9, and all other PCs (mostly running Windows XP) access the file server via SAMBA. Everything works perfectly! However, lately a home invasion in my neighborhood got me thinking. If they take my file server, my data is not protected. So, I would like to implement the LUKS partition encryption (/home) which sits on a separate disk. However, I don't quite like the decryption process at boot time. In other words, I would like to wake up the file server (WOL) remotely, and when it's done booting, I would like to log-in using the other PCs and enter the passphrase remotely to decrypt /home. Is this possible using LUKS encryption (i.e., cryptsetup)? If not, what would be another alternative to what I am trying to do using a secure encryption (so that the data is safe from thieves)?

After several avaliations a concluded that apps don't show smart informations if a hard disk partition is monted.
When i boot with livecd it shows a failure in the hard disk, but in monted system dont.
Security :: Ways To Secure Sendmail Or Secure Alternatives To Send Mail
Dec 1, 2010I'm an Oracle DBA and started working for my current employer about 4 months ago. This past weekend an alert re: FS space brought my attention to /var/spool/clientmqueue (full of mail re: cron jobs) and the fact that sendmail is not running on our Linux servers.I'm told that the IT security team deemed sendmail too vulnerable so we don't run it.Aside from FS filling up and missing notification of issues with crontab entries, I'm concerned that we may be missing notification of potential issues. In other Unix/Linux environments I've seen emails from the print daemon when it experienced problems with specific jobs.
Are there other Linux facilities aside from cron and lpd that use email to advise the users of possible issues? Are there ways to secure sendmail or secure alternatives to sendmail? My primary need/desire is to make sure that emails regarding issues on the server get to the appropriate users. Secondary goal would be to have the ability to use mailx to send mail out. There is No need/desire to receive mail from outside.
General :: Windows 7 Disk Management Utility Doesn't Show Disk With Ext3 Partition
Oct 10, 2010I have a 2 TB disk in an external SATA dock, formatted with a single ext3 (Linux) partition, which doesn't show up in the Windows 7 Computer Management->Disk Management utility, even as a raw/blank disk. I've verified that there's nothing wrong with the disk by connecting it to my Linux machine and mounting it, and I've verified that the dock is functioning properly by connecting a different FAT32-formatted disk, which mounts flawlessly as expected.I realize that I can't actually read the ext3 partition without additional software (e.g., Ext3IFS), but why doesn't the disk show up at all? Is there some sort of stupid anti-Linux filter built in? Is there any way to force Windows to recognize the disk, so that I can at the very least use direct block access with it?
Background: I want to clone an identical 2 TB disk onto this one. Due to my hardware layout, it's much easier to have the source disk attached to one machine and the destination disk connected to another, and do the clone over the network (the network is not a bottleneck with switched gigabit ethernet), than it is to hook them both up to one machine.(1) I did this once before when both machines were running Linux, but I've since upgraded the destination machine and decided to switch back to Windows for regular desktop use. I've got Cygwin installed, and have verified that the same basic method (dd + nc) will work, but I can't do anything if Windows doesn't even consider the destination disk to exist.I only have one eSATA port on each machine. Opening them up just to do this clone is a rather large annoyance. Also, since this is my backup disk, I'd like to eventually automate the cloning from the active disk to another one that I regularly swap with a third disk that I store off-site.
General :: Disk Utility And Df Show Different Disk Space ?
Nov 18, 2010I don't understand disk sizes in Linux. I have a 500GB drive. It's ext4. I have run "tune2fs -m 0" on it to reserve the amount of space reserved for root to 0.
I'm using Ubuntu 10.04 that comes with a Disk Utility. When I run "System->Administration->Disk Utility (palimpsest)" the disk shows up as 500GB (see picture). But when I run df -h it shows up as 459GB. So, I don't understand the discrepancy.
When I run df I get the following:

Ubuntu Security :: Security, Passwords & Encryption Keys?
Jun 7, 2011I am not very security minded...I'm aware of it, and always made sure I had up-to-date overall protection in Windows but firewalls, and the blasted passwords are largely a thorn in my side!When I got my iPhone last year I suddenly discovered password managers & "wallets" to keep all that kind of information in and syncable across different devices. My life got so much easier. Of course now I need to figure out encryption keys, and how they work (I'm clueless). I also need to find a program or system that I can move my existing low-tech info (mailnly user name & passwords) that will also accomodate the increased needs of Ubuntu security and still be sync-able. I started a little research weeks ago, but my current "wallet" only exports .csv so I quit since I'm going to have to do a lot of data entry whatever I go with.So here goes:
1) what is the difference (bare bones) between using an encryption key (e.k.) vs. a standard user created password? what situations are better suited for e.k.?
2) I have seahorse (default intall with Ubuntu I guess) but the only thing in it is Login under passwords which leads to a login keyring (?) and a drop-down list of about 6-10 of the gazillon passwords I use daily. The other tabs are for keys which I don't have any concept of.
3) I know FF also "remembers" user id & passwords as you choose to have it do so. Is that information transferable into seahorse or another program?
4)I'm also (today) getting ready to really set up my system for user names & security across my little home network. How can I integrate that into whichever program/app I go with to store my pwds and keys?
5)give me links to fairly current documentation on this stuff?
6) Any program/app recommendations.Pros/cons uses, what they can & can't do or be used for, etc.

Dec 23, 2010I am building an active directory and using BIND9 as my DNS. To allow for secure dynamic updates from the domain, I am enabling GSS-TSIG as detailed here and here. Unfortunately, some of the commands and configurations used here seem to be depreciated, at least in the newer versions that I'm using. My issue is one of keytab encryption. I generated a keytab using ktpass.exe on the Windows Server 2008 domain controller. I have tried DES/MD5, AES128/SHA1 and AES256/SHA1, each have been turned down by ktutil on the kerberos server (FreeBSD). Each time, it outputs the following error: ktutil: AES256/SHA1*: encryption type AES256/SHA1* not supported *Respective to encryption used.
I cannot find a list of suitable encryption schemes that ktutil will accept. The FreeBSD handbook details a means of producing a keytab file, but I'm not sure how to configure the Domain Controller to use the keytab.
Fedora :: Keep Getting "A Hard Disk Is Failing" Warnings From The Disk Utility
Jun 8, 2011I am on F15 32-bit with GNOME 3. I keep getting "A Hard Disk Is Failing" warnings from the Disk Utility, very frequently. Is this a serious issue? Because I knew this to be a bug in Palimpsest DU back in F13/14. Also how can I disable any notifications from this application?

Jul 20, 2011Has anybody ever used Disk Utility to set up software RAID? Here I am running terminal commands (I'm a terminal junkie) and I just happen to stumble across instructions that indicate "Or you can just set it up through Disk Utility."
Sure enough in disk utility, it looks like all of the configurable options are there. It makes me wonder, though... is this kind of GUI functionality something that isn't really solid? Or does it operate predictably and effectively?

I uninstalled and reinstalled the Disk Utility, still not working.
I have three HDDs and many partitions. I multi boot Linux, Win 7 and Win XP.
All OS's boot cleanly using EasyBCD boot loader.
It did not work in 10.04 or 10.10.

Aug 31, 2010When I use disk utility to expand my RAID array it creates a partition on my 1.5TB drive which it would like to add to the RAID 5.
However, none of the drive existing on the RAID are partitioned so what I think has happened is the partition itself has created a difference of about 2 million bytes smaller than the others and thus unable to add the component.
How can I specify the exact bytes for my hard drive partition so that I can add this to the array?

Nov 24, 2010Right clicking on a drive will format the drive but Disk Utility 2.30.1 included with Ubuntu 10.10 will not format the drive and says the drive is busy.
