I read in the WSJ today that there is an effort to fingerprint computers and phones. I understand the business model, I'm concerned that too much information will be floating around.

So I found banshee and decided to try and manage my old music library for real. Many of my imported CDs are really old so they have little to no meta-data connected to them.
I found the last.fm fingerprinting addon and it seemed like it was the right thing. However I have some problems. Every time I try to use the fingerprinting I need to login to last.fm so for an album of 17 tracks I need to login about 17 times.
Connected to this is the problem that banshee doesn't seem to always write the new data to the file. I have checked that I allow it to write meta-data to file and change names of files. But sometimes it doesn't seem to stick. Is this how it is suppose to work? If not, how could i fix it? I haven't found any threads or pages that describe this problem. But I would assume this would be a problem for those with previously unmanaged audio tracks. On a side note. I would like to convert my mp3 and other formats to ogg or similar free format. What would you recommend for this? Can banshee do this? I haven't searched for this yet but I thought I'd ask anyway. Is there some nice app that can do this for a whole library or similar?
I would like to do 2 things in kmail.
1- I would like to sign and not encrypt the mail that I sent. How do I do that?
2- How do I import my digital certificate in kmail?
I setup a SSH server on my computer on a very high port, so that my brother could surf the web through my computer from Iran, since the majority of websites are filtered there.
Today, he told me he cannot connect to my computer. That's why, I got suspicious that they are doing packet based filtering instead of port. Then I decided to change the port to 433 for https, but one of my friend told me that they just banned https in Iran as well.
I was wondering if there's any way I can manipulate SSH packets between two computers so that my brother's ISP won't figure out he's exchanging SSH packets?
I have computers in the DMZ (192.168.1.0/24) .. How to block traffic initiated from computers in the DMZ?

And same with firewall like ZoneAlarm and Comodo ?
Some people say you do not need a anti-virus program like Norton or Kaspersky or any firewall.Other people say you do and some say that Unix and Mac OSX have built in firewall.
And if on uses windows use ZoneAlarm or Comodo has it does alot more than windows firewall and router firewall. Note the admin saying the other thread was why windows get more malware and not very much the subject of the thread to post there.
Picture the following:On computer A, local user John (and John alone) has rwx access to file1.txtComputer B also has a local user account named John. If file1.txt was to be copied from computer A to computer B, would the user account John on computer B be able to access it?I guess this wouldn't work using two windows computers due to the User name / GUID relationship. Maybe linux has something similar?

But for reasons unknown, she can't access the bit which she needs to. It says: 'can't set the browser' Java is enabled and so on, we read the instructions. On her windoze computer, she has a digital certificate. I copied it onto my mem-stick. When I try to copy it from my mem-stick to my Linux machine, I can't. Not even as root! The folder is called 'certificado digital' and contains two folders:
Trash.(tilde)1 and VM_Ware_Workstation They both have some kind of encrypted stuff inside. Can this certificate be installed on my machine?? Trash has 5 things, VM_Ware_Workstation has 3 things. The guy who set this up for her told her she must use Mozilla. Is a certificate only valid with a particular browser?

View 9 Replies View RelatedI am looking for a new smart one. Although I am a long time Blackberry user, I am open to switch to droid or Iphone. One frustration I had with Blackberry was that I was not able synch my phone with my home computer (ubuntu) when I checked two years ago. Since then I have been using a windows machine to synch.
Now I am looking for a new phone and I would like it to work with my Ubuntu computer. I am wondering what other Ubuntu users experience are on this issue.
I upgraded to Ubuntu 10.04 LTS 64-bit and I can't browse the contents of my Cell Phones anymore. I was able to do it with 9.04 but it was a hassle, because if I was not quick enough to acknowledge the request on my phone Ubuntu would get a time out error but after the 3rd try I would usually successfully connect to my phone or if I deleted the phone from the bluetooth and then re add it it would connect on the first try.
With 10.04 when I first installed 10.04 it would connect to my phones without any problems, now it won't connect at all, if I select browse files on device and select a phone it does nothing,no phone response and no error message from Ubuntu, it just sits there like I never tried to access my phones.
I can Send files from Ubuntu to my phones and send files from my phones to Ubuntu but I can't browse the files on my phone from within Ubuntu's Bluetooth program.
I can successfully browse and transfer files in XP running natively and under Virtualbox using Samsung's Program "New PC Studio."
What are the chances of super smart phones being released?Devices which look like normal smart phones, but have the ability to run a full blown linux distro like ubuntu and have the power to play 1080p files, which also come with docking stations so you can plugin an external display, usb keyboard and mouse, so at home, it can be used as a normal desktop PC...Possibly using the ION based NVIDIA GPU with dual core 64bit processor!

I already have an always on headless Linux server running Ubuntu Server 9.04 (no GUI installed), so does anyone know of software and hardware that'll work with my setup to enable one of the analog lines in my home to work with Skype?
Also it seems most of the USB to Phone adapters are being discontinued and Skype doesn't even list any on their site. Do you guys know if they're phasing these devices out?
Anyone know of an application that I can send text messages to cell phones with? I send alot of text messages to my wife while I work and it would be so much easier if I could just do it from my keyboard.

So fast forward to today where I got my 1st Android powered mobile phone and I can configure the Android mail client to send/receive IMAP email but my question is do I need to become an open relay to allow my random wireless providers dynamic range of IP's to send mail via Postfix? Seems extremely vulnerable and scary to think I would have to allow my providers IP range to relay mail via my MTA. I started reading a bit and I think I need SASL authentication and since both Postfix 2.8.1 & Dovecot 2.0.11 are both configured / using TLS, is there anything else I would need or you recommend for sending email from my Android powered mobile?

The PIN validation screen is giving me some trouble. I am trying to pair an LG Rumor Touch and the PIN pops up and matches and the phone is happy to accept the pairing so when I click the PIN matches button on the Bluetooth Remote Device Wizard it will not close. It shows a spinny clocky but just sits there until I cancel. The device manager shows a greyed out light but it lists the device. The tray icon shows device, but gives No supported services found on the menu entry. Dolphin shows device but when I click it to browse it loads to an empty folder. The Device Wizard behaves this way for other phones also, but I was able to get some services running if I ignored it and let it sit there. If I canceled the process it messed up the services.

The ip in postfix is allowed to relay but I suspect that the mobile provider is using DHCP to issue address to the phone (though I have check the ip addresses are always allocated the same) I have checked via a fixed ip that is allowed in the relay and this does not generate the same error. Does anyone know what I can change in Amavis or Postfix to sort this out, because legal mail is being rejected via the mobile phones at the moment.

I just installed 10.10) i had speaker audio on my laptop but the front jacks for head phones didn't work. After fidiling with some config files, i forget which config thing it is in but there was numerous mentions about where you had to put "options I am already added to the audio group for my computer and running vlc as root does not work (vlc-wrapper) regular won't run as root, i tried that because i have fixed other hardware problems by running programs as root. The laptop is a HP Pavillion dv5-1000 and has a regular sound card and a hdmi port (the sound is configured to play out of the non hdmi one)

1. Problem: I cannot regulate the volume of the phones (output) anymore with gnome-volume-control. By default the volume is set to 100% which is way too loud. When I set it under 100% there is no sound at all. Values over 100% work.
2. Problem: The X server is freezing iregulary when I connect the headset and disconnect it, Magic SysRq works. I checked Xorg.0.log and found out that it recognizes the usb headset as keyboard:

Just thought I'd ask on her which smart phones have the best native support in Fedora? I use F14 (I also use a debian spin-off called Mepis) I was thinking either a Nokia E7 or an HTC / Samsung with Android, but I'm not sure what's available for email synchronisation etc.

However, there doesn't seem to be an application that will work with my camera. I've tried Camera, gtcam and Digital Camera that gets loaded while installing the version. gtcam and Digital Camera have an option for a Samsun Digimax 800 but none for my camera.
Does anyone know of an application that has my camera as an option.

I'm having some problems with Ubuntu 10.04 64bit finding my digital camera (Nikon CoolPix S4000). For whatever reason, when I plug in the camera via USB connection, Ubuntu will not detect it. The odd thing is that on my old Ubuntu 9.04 32bit install my camera was detected fine (it appeared as an icon on the desktop, akin to a flashdrive or any other mounted drive).
