In Nautilus I select a directory on local NTFS volume. I'm logged in as root, right-click > Properties > Permissions and I set "Others" to "none". But it doesn't work. I want my friends & visitors to use and enjoy Ubuntu but without access to my NTFS volumes.

Only my main sudoer user account shall take advantage on this show-and-possibly-automount feature of GNOME, but not anyone else.

I keep getting the message that the two lines I have edited in fstab are bad. The volumes are sda2 and sda8, and the volume names are SPACELAB and Spaceman. I also need to be able to mount an NTFS usb drive from time to time. I am getting frustrated, so I have posted my fstab file below,

I have NTFS-protected directories under Windows. However under Linux, even though I'm not logged in as a Super-User, Ubuntu cheerfully mounts all NTFS partitions on this machine and EVERY computer on my home network. This gives my GUESTS complete access to all machines connected to my network: Nautilus -> Windows Network -> Workgroup -> Clicking on any computer Name gives access to windows' administrative shares C$, D$, etc. I've always known that Linux ignores Windows security, but... what is the solution?

Is there a utility that can act like a file manager like mc, that will permit me to create an ever expanding (to 320Gb) TAR file that will retain all the original file permissions. I have had nothing but disappointment with Linux backup utils with a FAT32 external drive, and I am concerned if I just try an tar the entire drive at once, with around 3 million files, I might run out of memory.
can assign permissions on a partition with ntfs as the file system. I am aware of editing fstab and setting some basic permissions. What I am clumsily dictating is can you edit permissions of individual folders for specific users in Linux. I have already tried chmod and such

any way to change file permissions of NTFS drives? All my C programming files resides in a NTFS drive and I need to set execute permision on them in order to run. I tired chmod -Rv 777 /media/Programming. and also tired chmod 775 *.* after entering the folder in which all my files resides. but both these commands doesn't seem to have any effect on the files. I know NTFS doesn't use Unix file system and chmod command goes in vain.

While doing some experiments with my partitions I must have messed up something and I am unable to mount or unmount USB devices graphically, it simply says I have not the permission...Apart from playing with pysdm settings, the only bad thing I did was to change the permissions....(suggestion from another forum)$ sudo chmod -R 777 /Datasudo chown -R fred:fred /Data
View 2 Replies View RelatedI've made 2 ntfs volumes by mkntfs. First one is a primary partition on usb hard drive and second is a logical partition on system hard drive. I used default cluster and sector sizes in mkntfs. Under Linux these partitions are mountable by ntfs-3g, readable and writable. But fdisk doesn't recognize their filesystem type. It recognizes that as "Linux". WinXP x64 also can't recognize filesystem type of these partitions. Why windows can't work with these partitions?

These files seem to be created when a user logs into a whokstation (my guess so far). I am trying to comply with a security mandate that all log files in the directory /var/log are set to 0640. The two mentioned files always seem to have the permissions 0644, does anyone know where and when these filea are created and how I might set the permissions when the files are created

- for various developers, testers and documentation users.
I would like to setup the following permissions on the main code repository directory:
dev - write permission
test - execute permission
doc - read permission
public (anyone outside these groups) - deny all access
I am unsure what chmod setting to use, or if this is even possible in ubuntu.
How is possible, that vim can write to file and changes his ownerchip ?

I'm not the only developer so I created a group called "developers" for my other users "Mike," "Alex," and "Cindy," which are developers (I'm Mike by the way). View 4 Replies View RelatedI recently did a fresh install of Ubuntu Maverick, and have found a slight issue with file permissions. Before starting the installation I backed up all my files to an ext3 partition, then during the process I moved all of these files over to an NTFS partition that I am using as a joint storage location for both Ubuntu 10.10 and Windows 7. Upon booting into my fresh Maverick install I found that all the files on my NTFS partition are now owned by root and I am unable to change the permissions using the conventional methods I am used to. I have tried using the GUI method through the properties of the folder, I've also tried using chown and chmod, but all to no avail... No matter how I make the change to the permissions, it will always revert back to root within seconds. who desperately wants full read/write access back to their data?

I would love to see that diagram. Years ago on a platform far away (Digitial VAX/VMS) their manuals had such a flow chart that covered not only the user-group-owner and read-write-execute permissions decision making but also include "access control list" processing at a superficial level. If someone has access to the VAX/VMS flow chart, that might be a start toward sorting what linux does.

The security issue is public users are able to upload files on to my server via the website. They could even access the root and execute whatever they want on the server.
I have consulted with 2-3 Linux experts. According to them, the PHP user has rights to execute anything on the server or upload & store files in whichever folder they want.
Can I protect my folders to avoid file uploads via the website. The application has security vulnerabilites. However, I want to prevent hackers to enter my site until the vulnerabilities are fixed.
I have a remote directory shared over NFS called tech with perms set as 0750 and owner set to root:tech. I have 2 groups: tech, and techAdmin. tech can read and execute within tech/. techAdmin can read, write, execute. I have 4 users: user1, user2, user3, user4. user1 and user2 is a member of techAdmin, user3 and user4 are members of tech. simple so far...but wait here's the problem. If user1 creates a file inside tech, user2 cant read or modify it because user1 owns it. Here's a few sites that reference this problem:

Some time back using this computer a SucKit rootkit was found. Having dd urandomed the drive, flattened CMOS battery, flashed BIOS, run Knoppix live CD 6.1,using no flat pack battery (laptop), and memtested the RAM, I am still having problems with what I suspect is a javascript file that tries to reload the rootkit from? firmware. I suspect the firmware as everything else should have eradicated it??
Also it or a hacker via a backdoor then corrupts the drivers so devices malfunction. Windows security programs and rootkit detectors don't seem to pick it up. Fresh install of Windows or linux after the above still show this problem, though internet not used. The person who admitted rootkitting this machine is capable of writing java programs or using javascripts to do all this.
When viewed using Ubuntu 8.4 files and dates on a Windows partition appear normal both in file manager and terminal. However booting using Knoppix CD these files are all green, and I cannot change their permissions, even as root. ie: everything is green including text files etc. If I copy them to a linux partition, I can change their permissions and make them nonexecutable and nonwritable. Also on the Windows FAT32 partition the . directory has the date 1 Jan 1970.
If I disable any green files, I can shutdown and reboot cleanly. If I don't I start having problems shutting down [/usr/sbin/init ?] And always these follow a pattern:

I've checked out a subversion project with source c++ files in netbeans 6.8 on Red Hat 5.5. My machine has a dual boot with windows xp and RHEL 5.5 so I checked out the project on a folder called winshare which is a shared drive/partition (E: under xp) allowing both operating systems to access the contents. I've Fedora as virtual machine on xp and wanted to be able to work on the source seamlessly whether using fedora or RHEL.
Problem is that Netbeans is able to build the source just fine but I can't seem to run the generated executable. It has -rw-rw---- permission and the owner is the same user logged in (let's say user1) but no matter what I do, whether I change permissions as user1 or root issuing command chmod 777 -R /dir/where/file/is does not have any effect whatsoever on the executable as well as any .cpp or .h files (nothing that I need exectue permissions on .cpp but just to make a point).
I'm just wondering - what is the best way to set up your encrypted volumes with dm_crypt and LUKS?
My understanding was that aes-lrw ws better than aes-cbc - and then I stumble upon [url] which says that LRW has some problems, and XTS is better? I dont know enough about encryption theory to be able to say anything, so i'm hoping some folks more enlightened will be able to say something here.
I was previously using aes-lrw-benbi to set up a volume. If xts is truly better - should i be using '-c aes-xts-benbi' then?
Reproducible with Firefox 3.6.6 (installed from Ubuntu 10.04 repository), on Dell D620, Ubuntu 10.04 Steps to reproduce:
1) start Firefox from command line "firefox -P"
2) create new Firefox profile on NTFS volume (mounted with NTFS-3g)
3) add NoScript extension (through extension manager Get Add-ons), restart Firefox as suggested
4) extension is not added to Firefox In case at step 2) profile is created on Linux volume, at 4) extension is added to firefox.I'm not 100% sure, but I think this bug is related to Firefox 3.6 update (no problems with Firefox 3.5). I did not make proper investigation, but I have feeling same problem applies to Thunderbird 3.1.This issue does not allow to share Firefox/Thunderbird profile on dual boot machine (Ubuntu/WindowsXP).
I'm running 10.04 running daily updates. A couple days back, I saw an update related to mounting volumes. Not sure if this is what broke my system, but might be. When attempting to mount a partition from nautilus, I get a message saying I do not have authorization. It does not even ask for my password, just fails. I tried running updates and this asks for my password and accepts it fine. I opened disk utility from the menus and tried to mount the volume from there but also got the same permission denied, not authorized without even being asked for my password.
I then ran gksu palimpsest. I was asked for my password and was able to mount and unmount partitions from there. However, when mounted, my applications and nautilus cannot access the data in the partitions mounted using gksu palimpsest. In nautilus, I can navigate to /media/Data (the partition in question) but I get "THE FOLDER CONTENTS CANNOT BE DISPLAYED You do not have the permissions necessary to view the contents of "Data"." When I open nautilus via gksu in the terminal, I do have full access to the partitions.
How do I get my privileges back for my user account. I am the only user on the computer, and I have never set up a root account since my upgrade to 10.04 months ago. I tried of course the Administration->Users and Groups menu, but I am not permitted to change the account type or open advanced settings. I click the button, but nothing happens, not even a password request. Running gksu admin-settings on the terminal allows me access. My current settings are attached.
I'm not a mathematician or cryptographer, only an end user of the technology trying to determine the "best" or safest future proof option to go with for long term archival while also maintaining reasonable performance with dual opteron ~2GHz or similar setup. I've noticed aes-cbc-essiv seems to be the default choice in various installers for reasons of backwards compatibility while others are moving towards XTS since the standardization.
