Ubuntu Security :: Netbook Remix: Password Authentication Fails (Correct PW)
Sep 16, 2010
I'm running eeebuntu on a Toshiba Satellite R10, I installed the Netbook Remix Package which was apparently a horrible idea. I cant click properly. I tried to open synaptic package manager to uninstall it but it tells me my password is wrong, which i know it is not. Is there anyway to fix this, i can open terminal.

I was hoping that someone could point me in the right direction. I just did an install and the os is up and running. During install, I set a root password and also set up a regular user account. The only option at login is the regular user acct. Needless to say, the os asks me to provide the root pw for just about everything I need to do.get an authentication failure. (I assume that this is the same as permission). I can find plenty of info on how to restrict access but nothing relevant to my problem. Just to rule out an install problem, I installed the os a 2nd time. I am very sure I have my passwords correct. One other thing to note is that on the 1st install, I used a different pw for root and regular user. On the 2nd, just to keep is as simple as possibl I used the same pw for root and reg user account. I am new to debian, but the distro that I have been using (slackware)

I am having trouble installing Ubuntu 10.10 netbook remix edition onto a Acer Aspire one netbook. I am attempting to install the OS from a 16GB PNY usb drive w/ the usb-universal installer and ubuntu 10.10 netbook remix .ISO
The reoccurring problem that I am encountering is that when I boot from the USB-drive and begin to install everything seems to be working, and then it is stuck at the menu where it asks who are you?; and of course i have filled in everything asked and at the bottom where you can look at what its doing in the terminal/detail section all it says is ready when you are, and the forward tap is unselectable.

Why i cant change from 800x480 to 1024x600, that this model of EEE pc doesnt support anything higher than 800x480 at the 10:1 ratio...
Firstly my question is, is it ACTUALLY possible to 'overclock' this type of netbook to run a higher res?
Im running ubtuntu netbook remix 10.04 and am new to linux (again, so sorry) so be nice, and ive tried getting my head around this 'sudo' stuff, and the xorg.conf file (which is nowhere to be found) and ive even tried a program calld astray but im pretty sure ive exhausted my patience as trying to self-teach . . .
And ive also tried to much around with xrandr or whatever that command was.. but i cant really get my head around it, and it kept telling me the resolution didnt exist ect...

For the past 2hrs I have been struggling to make KDE launch plasma-dekstop instead of plasma-netbook, but all in vain.I removed, then purged plasma-netbook and plasma-netbook-default-settings packages but after logging out and re-logging in the Netbook UI was back! After restarting the system now I can't even seem to get the KDM. I am greeted with a black screen.--- I restarted the system again and the nasty little bugger is back again! This is so frustrating. How do I get plasma-desktop to load instead?---- Great now I can see that plasma-desktop and plasma-netbook both are running simultaneously! netbook on top of desktop. So my final Q is how do I stop plasma-netbook from loading?

So on one of the Linux systems here (2.6 kernel if it matters), there's some weirdness regarding trying to ssh into the system. Basically, if you give it the wrong password on the first ssh attempt, it will give you two more attempts, but even if you give it the correct password, it still won't let you in on those subsequent attempts. (If you give the correct password on the first attempt, it will let you in.)
Example:
Code:
user1@machine1# ssh user2@machine2
user2@machine2's password: <wrong password>
Permission denied, please try again.
The system has sshd configured to use pam (i.e., UsePAM set to 'yes' in sshd_config), but I'm kind of a PAM dummy.

Kernel 2.6.21.5, Slackware 12.0
GNU bash 3.11.17
Being in a text console (VT, that is, the screen with 25 x80 chars), say tty1, and just after booting linux, I logged in as usual, typing my password. What happened then astonished me. In Slackware distros, a small quotation from some book is written on screen just after typing the correct password. Well, after typing my password, I could see it split into two halves instead of the quotation.

Can't seem to do it, wondering if anyone knows how? Normally there's something in sshd_config that can be switched to true or yes to allow root login but I can't see it in fedora 12.I can login via root at a terminal no problem, just not via ssh, I get access denied every time. Also, I need to login using password authentication.I've done: 227169 but that's just for GUI which I don't really need since I rarely ever log into the GUI.I have also searched through here and mostly only found info such as above, how to enable root login for GUI, or billions of posts about how logingin as root is bad but I cannotswer to my question.DISCLAIMER: Please do not reply to this thread if all you can contribute is the question of why I need root or to put some message telling me I can do everything using su, etc, etc. Please only contribute if you can answer my question. A: My machine and a valid quesiton. B: Spirit of Linux is open, not restrictive

I'm just coming back to Ubuntu after last seeing a GNOME desktop almost a year ago now. Just installed the new 10.04 version on my EEE 1000h with little to no problems. However, since then I've been kinda lost. Is it just me, or has Ubuntu been changed substantially over the last two distributions?
1) How do I change the netbook remix desktop mode? I like the left menu design, however I like the traditional desktop even more. Unfortunately I can't seem to find the desktop mode switcher anywhere.
2) Where is the grub menu.lst found? Looked in the /boot/grub/ folder and it doesn't seem to be there anymore.
3) Where's my multi touch? Do I have to install a package or configure a setting somewhere? With Jaunty it was a simple install and play. This time it doesn't seem that way at all.

I know this is a long shot, BUT Is there any way to implement the Netbook Remix 10.04 GUI into Windows 7? As in basically making Windows 7 look and act like the GUI in Remix. I love the GUI, and if it's impossible, I'll just suck it up and dual boot, the 30 gb Win7/XP partition is bugging the crap out of me. Just wondering if there was something out there that made this thing possible.
And for the record, I'd switch back to full linux when my card is supported in october =P

I tried for at least 4 hours last night and I could not get Ubuntu to install on my Acer Netbook. I used a 4GB Sandisk pendrive and changed the BIOS so the netbook booted from the pendrive, but all it did then was go to a black screen with white letters across the top saying Syslinx and a bunch of info kinda like copyright info.

I have tried several times installing ubuntu netbook remix on my netbook and have followed guides step by step but it dosn't work (screen goes black, flashing hyphen). Only thing i might be doing wrong is using an external 320gb hdd that i had previously formated to fat32 instead of a usb pendrive. Is this the problem, note i dont have a pendrive large enough.

i was in the process of trying to put the latest version of netbook remix on a flash drive (2gb Kingston), but failed mid-process. I had forgotten to format to FAT32, and thus ran into problems in the middle. I'm now left with a flash drive that is partially written to, and completely write-protected. And I can't get rid of anything on the flash drive. Nothing I've tried (Killdisk, re-formatting, MS-DOS) has helped me erase the flash drive permanently (every time I try Windows returns the message that the device is write-protected). Neither can I re-run the USB installer, which I downloaded from the pendrivelinux folk.
Either in erasing my flash drive completely, and starting again -- or in re-doing the making of this flashdrive into a boot disk for the netbook remix version of ubuntu.
