Ubuntu Security :: Making A Hardware Random Number Generator

I'd like to somehow connect a serial port to a headphone jack, plug it into the geiger counter and literally dump random noise from the geiger counter into the entropy pool used by /dev/random

SUSE :: Initializing The Random Number Generator?

Jan 10, 2009

I just tried booting SUSE 11.0, but the system stops at the point it shows "initializing random number generator". I have left the system running at that point for almost 2 hrs, with no way to get past that. System isn't locked up. It has never done this before. How do I fix this?I have also tried failsafe booting, but it stops at the same spot also.

Programming :: Perl Match Character - Random Sentence Generator ?

Aug 11, 2010

I am trying to make a random sentence generator in perl. So far I can loop it x times to make a fixed quantity of words, but I don't want to do that. Or I can let it go on until I hit ctrl-C :/

I want to have it so that when it reaches a word with a sentence terminating punctuation mark it stops.

My attempt to do that was with:

This is doing the woooosh text until ctrl-C thing...

Now however I am not sure how I can cut off everything after the punctuation mark (when it exists).

General :: Generate Random Number Either 1 Or 0?

Jan 21, 2010

Not only that but I need tons and tons of them generated, and I need it to be totally random each time.

Code:
matthew@mvm:/h/misc> cat a
#!/bin/bash
for i in {1..5}; do
echo $RANDOM

[Code]....

There you can see that it is the same number. It does that every time!! Grrr. The strange thing is each time I manually type [or copy & paste] it into the terminal, it gives random [not static, like I am getting from my script] results.

The reason I want this is because I am making a script where this line will randomly go up or down [depending on if the random number is 1 or 0].

Ubuntu Networking :: Random Creation Of Networks / Force It To Use Correct One Without Making Another?

At the same time it makes a new network entry, overlapping the one previous:

It's usually a battle with the wifi and my re enabling the correct setting over and over and over again. Is there a fix for either the mysterious lack of selection in the first message, or a way to force it to use the correct one without making another?

Ubuntu Networking :: Unable To Connect To A Small Number Of Random Websites: Otherwise Networking Is Fine

Dec 29, 2010

I was having no problems (that I knew of) browsing the web since installing Ubuntu 10.10 a week or so ago. I was previously trialling Win7 as my customers will likely be using that in the future. Then I wanted to go to internode.on.net. Got the following: Quote: Firefox can't establish a connection to the server at internode.on.net. or Quote: Oops! Google Chrome could not connect to internode.on.net

As it was just after Christmas I thought it must be down, for upgrades or maintenance etc. I later tried to go to Freebsd.org; same error. I've been having a small number of other websites give the same error. I thought nothing of this until I tried it on my wife's macpro. I could log onto all the websites I wanted to and none gave any indication of having been down. Both boxes are on the same adsl connection. I still can't access internode or freebsd on 10.10 yet have been able to access every website on OSX. Now, I was only looking at them for info but am worried I won't be able to access something important. (so far everything I 'need' is working)

ping just drops out. edit: weirdest thing! I just retried and now can not emulate the problem for internode. freebsd still won't show. that is less than five minutes between problems and resolution! I hadn't even posted! But I still would like to have an idea of what is going on. Here is the ping error for freebsd: Quote:

I am running Ubuntu 11.04, and a little bit concerned. As of now I have completely disabled remote desktop on my laptop.

Fedora Security :: Unknown Software Sending Data On Random Ports

Jun 1, 2009

I just discovered that my server is sending huge amount of data out at about 1Mbps. My immediate thought was the deluge bittorrent client, however it is supposedly not running (and a check confirmed its total active torrents was set to 0). I turned off the network and went in to Firestarter to set the outbound traffic to restrictive, turned on network again and no more data was sent. A look in Firestarter / Events showed a long list of random ports being used (see further down). How can I identify what program is sending all the data?

In Firestarter it doesn't really say much more than the port. Not sure if it is some misconfigured program or a malware/virus. I just got my ADSL connected a few days ago, and before that I used a mobile broadband (3G) as I just relocated. During the period I used the 3G the server might have been without firewall for a few days and it was also at this time I discovered an increase in network traffic (but I didn't really pay much attention at that time). I am running Fedora 10.

List of events from firestarter, my server is 192.168.1.100:

Security :: Limit The Number Of Ssh Connections?

Dec 13, 2010

Dist: Fedora 14
SSHD: OpenSSH 5.5p1

I need to limit the number of ssh connections a user has. All the users are using tunnel only so their shell is set to /sbin/nologin The logins do not open a shell they just create the tunnel so /etc/security/limits.conf has no effect on them at all.

I tried setting 'MaxSessions 1' in sshd_config but either that doesn't not do what I expect it to or it plain does not work as even with a normal user I was able to open an unlimited number of sessions. I need a good secure way to limit each user to 1 ssh session without them having a shell but Im unable to find a solution.

General :: Check Number Of Pending Security Updates In Ubuntu

Oct 15, 2010

I have been forbidden to enable automatic updates on our Ubuntu servers, for both security and regular packages. When I log into any of my four Ubuntu servers, the welcome message contains this:

39 packages can be updated.
26 updates are security updates.

However, when I run the Nagios plugin that monitors APT, I get:

% /usr/lib/nagios/plugins/check_apt
APT WARNING: 33 packages available for upgrade (0 critical updates).

I need to know how to properly detect that there are pending security updates, and regular updates. Once I can do that, I plan to write a Nagios script that will return WARNING for pending regular updates, and CRITICAL for pending security updates.

Ubuntu Security :: Cannot Connect To Port Number / When Firewall Is Enabled

Sep 5, 2010

i am using 9.10 karmic. Firewall is enabled. added ports with ufw allow [portnumber], and i still cannot connect to a port number. iv tryed ufw allow ssh/tcp but that does not work. the ports work when i disable the firewall and i dont want to do that.

ufw is available in all new installations of Ubuntu since 8.04 LTS, but is disabled by default. The standard Ubuntu installation has a no open service ports policy, so enabling the firewall by default doesn't gain any extra security in the default installation, but could provide confusion for people new to Ubuntu when new software that is installed does not work because of restrictive firewall rules. As a result, when first adding ufw to Ubuntu it was decided that users must 'opt-in' to using the firewall. In Ubuntu 9.04 and later, you can enable ufw during installation using preseeding. See /usr/share/doc/ufw/README.Debian for details.

Security :: SSH Config - What's To Stop The MIM From Making A Substitution Of Keys During The Initial Exchange

Oct 20, 2010

Ive been running ssh to log into server for long time. Recently a x-win app reported that it suspects a man in the middle attack (MiMA), so I want to tighten this up, but it seems to me if there is a MiM, then the initial key exchange is vulnerable to a substitution. This is on solaris, but since its a basic concept I'm ot getting, it shouldnt matter,

Here's the gist of what I read:

- create users key pair,
- enable host authentication (ssh_config file on client and sshd_config file on remote host)
- start an ssh session and accept the remote hosts key (and I assume the remote host will take client users key and store some where)

Questions:

1. What's to stop the MIM from making a substitution of keys during the initial exchange?? Shouldn't the keys be initially transfered in a more secure fashion??

2. Does the server just accept new keys from any existing user who want to create an ssh session? So if some one knows a username and password (such as the owner of an application they know is running) couldn't they just create their own keypair and have the server accept them?
