Ubuntu :: Retrieve Windows 7 Product Key From Non-working Installation?
Jun 7, 2011
I'm trying to find a way to retrieve the Windows 7 Product Key from another partition on my computer.
I really only use windows to play MMOs, but an attempt to install ie9 has completely borked my windows install... even the fancy automatic windows repair gives up and says it can do nothing.
The Computer originally had Vista on it, and I upgraded it to 7 using the free upgrade kit HP gave away to new computer buyers. I can reinstall vista, since I kept the restore partition for it, but my upgrade disk had the product key on the sleeve and the sleeve for my disk has gone missing.
I tried a few programs through wine that either don't work because certain functions are not available, so the fields that would have the info are blank. Or the program requires windows admin privileges and wine doesn't have a "run as administrator" function to it (yet).
Anyone know of a way to extract the product key? I know I have to re-install.. I just don't fancy having to use vista (except to re-upgrade to 7).

I've got a laptop here where the Windows product key has been torn from the bottom. Windows will not boot up on this laptop (it blue screens). When I remove the hard drive from the laptop and install it into my working Windows computer, the partition shows up as "raw". However, the partition mounts under Ubuntu just fine, so I'm wondering if there are any Linux tools that will allow me to retrieve the Windows 7 product key, from within Linux...

I recently tried to install Ubuntu 10.10 on to my Windows 7 computer so that I could dual-boot it. I didn't want to mess about with partitioning and the lot so I just clicked Install inside Windows, assuming that it would install it and I wouldn't have to do anything. But after it installed I noticed that it had deleted all of my files and my Windows OS. I am wondering whether there is a way that I could retrieve my files, or if somebody could post some instructions so that this doesn't happen again.

I have Intel Pentium dual core T4300 2.10ghz processor in dell inspiron laptop. i had windows vista home basic by default and then i got ubuntu 9.04 installed on it from one of my friend. i was using ubuntu mostly (and upgraded it to ubuntu 9.10)as i never liked vista. so i installed windows 7 over windows vista. now vista is gone and windows 7 is working. but i no more see the boot options and cant access ubuntu at all. the boot options (F12) does not show linux partition at all. however the linux partition is seen in device manager. but its only seen.
how do i retrieve my old boot options including linux os? which asks me which os to boot from.

A few days ago I got this Ubuntu box (9.10) to connect to the Windows network in our house. Sharing printers and files. Life was good. But today, Places > Network > Workgroup tries to connect for about a minute then I get a "Unable to mount locations, Failed to retrieve share list from server" error. The only thing I recall changing at around the same time was adding Wine.

I have a question, I have a Windows 7 CD that I had used on a computer, and it is my understanding that you can use RemoveWAT to remove the need for a product activation key, so my question is, will running RemoveWAT on a Windows 7 Boot CD allow me to then install Windows 7 on Ubuntu using virtual box?

I had Ubuntu installed in Windows XP (with Wubi). One day my motherboard, let's just say stopped working. So, I had to replace my motherboard..., well I bought a new PC, but with the Hard Drive of the old one. When I first started it i got the same boot screen letting me choose between Ubuntu and Windows XP. Well, you can pretty much figure out that none of them worked. So, I installed Windows 7 (as the new configuration is pretty powerful). So, from the boot menu Windows XP was replaced by Windows 7 but still Ubuntu stays there and I can't figure out how to delete it.

My girlfriend of over a year recently bought a Toshiba laptop. Don't know much about it for I have not seen it myself. 3GB of RAM. Anyway, it's a Windows 7 Home Premium Edition. She has Microsoft Office 2007 pre-installed on it. Now, it's asking for a Product Key, which she does not have. Why? I don't know. I guess they didn't give her a box that has one on it, or something.
So, she sent Microsoft an e-mail and is now awaiting a reply. Anything that I can (LEGALLY) do to help her figure out the Product Key? She said there is one inputed (didn't think that was a word) in the dialog window asking for it, but it says that it's incorrect.

I'm running Fedora 14 and when I'm surfing the web, it seems to lag in between pages. I don't think its my net connection, I just wiped windows 7 off my system for Fedora and it did not suffer from the same lag issues.I've tried adding in google's alternate dns server 8.8.8.8 but it didn't seem to fix the issue. I ran into this issue a couple years back on Ubuntu 8.1 or something like that, and I never could find out what I needed to configure. My second problem is that when I try to connect to other Windows systems on my wlan or wired connection, it gives the error "failed to retrieve share list from server". I'm not experienced in networking, can someone explain this to me?

I just installed Fedora 12.
I am getting following error if I try to give the command yum update
Quote...
I tried all the steps in the post http://rishabhsays.wordpress.com/201...sitory-fedora/ and no success. I am behind a proxy server and got proxy related info in yum.conf file but still facing the same problem.
I even tried following commands with no success
Quote...
I can connect to Internet but cannot update using yum
There seems to be a bug reported on the same issue in FEDORA13 - https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=564509

I have been trying now for 3 days to install Fedora 15 on my computer. I have Windows 7 installed and have created a free partition for this install. When I am installing I get to the repository selection part and I get only 3 options (Fedora 15, Fedora 15 Testing, Fedora 15 Updates), by default the Fedora 15 and Fedora 15 Updates are selected. There is no option for DVD Repository and if I click add repository and select DVD it says no repository found. Furthermore, if I proceed with the 2 default repositories checked off it takes about 8 hours to download everything online and then towards the end it says it couldn't retrieve a file and exit installation. How to use the DVD to get all the packages so that my install doesn't keep taking 8 hours to fail?
This is the 64bit version I am trying to install, system specs:
Intel Core i5-2500K CPU @ 3.30GHz
16.0 GB Ram
ATI Radeon HD 5800 Series
1 TB Harddrive
The original DVD I got from the direct download. I also downloaded via torrent to see if that worked and got the same results.

I'm looking for an open source solution to replace Cisco CS-MARS. MARS aggregates syslog data sent to it from remote devices and creates an attack mitigation plan that can then be applied to the devices. It can be used with servers, security appliances and network devices.
I had a brief look at snort, but that seems to function at the packet level and does not aggregate syslog data. Does anyone have experience or maybe know of a product I should look at?

I installed office 2000 CD using wine, I did this on Ubuntu net-book remix on a NC10 using a networked CD drive. So the installation went okay, I then came to using the software, word opened and promoted me for my product key, which I entered correctly the window disappeared for a second then repaired, I entered the key again but then this caused the whole program to shut down, I have tried repairing it , reinstalling it all apart from uninstalling and reinstalling it. Which I have tried and subsequently failed
Right I got it to work, so for any looking for the solutions simply go to /home/(username)/.wine/system.reg and change the user name and the organisation either delete it or enter something, I entered my user name but I left the organisation blank but I left the quote marks that were there. Save it and the product code thingy should not appear again.

I know that there have been a lot of messages (with repo correction info posted) for yum updates after install; but I'm trying to do an internet install of F11 and I'm getting the same message. Obviously I can't change a yum.conf file for this -- but it does give one the option to edit the location.
The default location is: [URL].. There's one other big flaw with the internet install -- it writes HD partition changes to the disk right after you set up the partition scheme; shouldn't it wait until it knows it can connect to the repository?? I had to boot to a Ubuntu live dvd to get on here to post this. I'm definitely not saving time using the internet install option.
I got online last night and found some of the info. on the yum updates issue, with different mirrors or repositores. So what I tried changing for the default repo / metadata location, using the edit option is:
I changed the word metalink to mirrorlist. I changed https to http. I tried using http://mirror.liberty.edu/pub (etc) which is actually an rpm fusion mirror. I likewise tried http://mirrors.cat.pdx.edu (etc.) I gave up and went to bed, and this morning I just tried the http://download.fedora.redhat.com/pub/fedora/linux/releases/$releasever/Everything/$basearch/os/ (and I also tried the above redhat.com address substituting i386 for basearch and 11 for $releasever) -- no go with any of that. Same error message about cannot retrieve installer metadata.
All of the other messages I've seen on this issue have been about Yum updates; not installs. Hopefully the install DVD will show up in the next couple of hours; but I'd like to make this work if I can ??

I want to build deb packages for two versions of same product that can be installed on the machine simultaneously. The source folder structure for both the packages have a common folder needed by both the versions. So i need to keep the common folder till both the versions are removed from the machine. My problem is that i can't install both the versions at the same time, i.e i have to uninstall the installed version and then install the other version. After installing one version, if i try to install another version, an overwrite error comes up. is there any option in dpkg for overwrite? Or is there any way to partially uninstall a deb package?

Before going too far it may be simplest to answer the question "Does Live USB Creator create a working system for Windows 7?" If not then don't bother reading further. I have installed Live USB Creator on a 32-bit Windows 7 computer but when I run it I can't for the life of me get it to recognize any type of drive. I've read and tried the instructions of using the command line with the --force [drive]: but that has no effect Maybe I am misunderstanding this whole program. From what I read about it, this program will create a working Windows system, place it on a USB stick and then run Windows on a different computer. In my application I would like to run it on my work computer which has Windows XP. If this application should work then will I have complete access to all my computer drives and files and the network/internet? I imagine I would need to install all necessary programs so that I could use them in Windows 7 and would I need to install those programs on the USB stick or could they be on a local hard drive?
