Ubuntu :: Hiding Folders Inside Of Shared Folders?

Mar 27, 2010

I am setting up a lubuntu nas with all of my music, movies, etc on it. I want to give my kids access to my mp3 directory, so I can move all of the kid appropiate music into the root of my mp3 dir, in the same order I have all of my music sorted. Under the Music folder, I have them sorted, in folders, by letter. So A, B, C, D, etc... Now, in those folders are the respective artists. So where there may be something approipate in the P folder (say, Paramore), there is something inapproipate (say, Pantera)Now, when the kids go to the P folder, I don't want them to even see the Pantera folder. I just want them to see the Paramore folder. I tried a test using chmod 711 and chmod 700 on a directory with a test user, and the user can't access the directory, but can still see it

This way I could have ubuntu and xp using the same set of music files, picture files, etc. I was having a very hard time understanding how to get from here to there because I'm such a newbie. However I have discovered how to do it and I wanted to post it, in hopes it will make things easier for other newbies.This allows me to see every TYPE of document in /dev/sda8/Media (windows My Documents folder) without having to see any of the folders (My Music, My Pictures, etc).

Ubuntu :: Renaming Photos In KDE4?

Sep 14, 2010

I'm trying to batch rename 3,300 photos, and can't figure it out.

I've tried digiKam and KRename, however I can't figure out how to simply rename the files as such:

~/Pictures/[year]/[month]/[datetime].JPG

where the year, month, and datetime are when the picture was taken, via EXIF data. In digiKam, I can't figure out how to rename the files to move to a different dirrectory than their current one, and with KRename, I can't figure out how to only use the year for the directory instead of the entire datetime.

Ubuntu :: Renaming The Smb.conf File?

Apr 5, 2011

I am trying to follow the instructions in the smb.conf file which says, "name original file smb.conf.master and create the "real" config file with test parm -s smb.conf.master >smb.conf".

First I made myself the owner of the smb.conf file. Then I tried to rename the smb.conf file to smb.conf.master. When I try to do this with: rename smb.conf smb.conf.master the result is: Bareword "smb" not allowed while "strict subs" in use at (eval 1) line 1.Bareword "conf" not allowed while "strict subs" in use at (eval 1) line 1.

Can someone tell me what this means, (why it is happening) and what do I need to do in order to rename the smb.conf file to smb.conf.master.

Ubuntu :: Renaming Wine Menu Items ?

Mar 18, 2010

Alright, after trying to organize shortcuts in Wine's menu (which did not work), I ended up hitting the 'Revert' button, which changed the names of most of the folders:

Screenshot

As you've probably guessed, I want to remove "wine-Programs-" from the beginning of the folder names. I've tried using the menu editor to do this, but the 'Properties' button does not seem to work on anything I did not create myself. How do I go about editing the names?

I would also like to know how to move the MS Office shortcuts into a custom folder/menu. They refuse to drag into any folder I make.

Ubuntu :: Renaming Places In Nautilus Sidepane

Jun 18, 2010

A potentially very dumb question but still ... I want to create a place that I can choose in the panel at the top left. So I
- go to Nautilus (tree view in sidepane) down in the folders until I see my destination on the left;
- switch to places in the sidepane and drag and drop the folder onto the places thing.

Then, the folder shows up with the name there, which is something like "Web_ABC". So I want to change it to "Web" only. On my 64bit machine, this works, on my 32bit machine, it doesn't. Whenever I change the name and press ENTER, it goes back to the old name. On the 64bit system, it only worked when I went to some other place once, and then fine, but on the 32bit one, no chance.

Ubuntu :: Deleting File While Renaming / Recover These?

Feb 25, 2011

This has happened twice to me. I'm editing a filename on the desktop, for example, I have a part of the name highlighted and press delete. Inadvertently, I press delete again, but with nothing highlighted. The file is deleted, but is not added to the recycle bin (possible bug).

I believe that is what is happening. I cannot seem to recreate it purposefully on my work computer --I had done this at home this morning while sans-coffee.

Is there a way to recover the files?

Ubuntu :: Script For Renaming Files Giving Them The Name Of The Folder They're In?

Feb 2, 2010

I have a folder where all of my movies are placed. Each movie lies in its own folder. I want to write a script which renames all the movie files and gives them the name of the folder they are in.For example I want this file:/home/tryfon/movies/Black Irish [2007]/black.irish.dvdrip.avi to be renamed to /home/tryfon/movies/Black Irish [2007]/Black Irish [2007].aviOne issue is that the video files are of several file types (mostly avi, divx and mkv).Another issue is that some movies consist of two parts, so if a second avi file is found I would like the two (or more) files to be named like: "Black Irish [2007] CD1" and "Black Irish [2007] CD2", or if this is not possible at least notify me of the folders that contain more than one video fil

Ubuntu :: NTFS - Renaming To Change Case = Two Steps?

Mar 30, 2010

When I try to rename a file in a mounted NTFS file system by only changing the letter case, I receive an error message saying that it is not possible because the file already exists. This must be because ntfs is not case sensitive as regards determining a file name. However, it can use and remember whatever case you want to use. So I can change the letter case in the file's name in two steps: saving the file with a different name first and then renaming it again with the original name and the letter cases I want to use.

Ubuntu Networking :: Bulk Renaming Files On A SMB Share?

Jan 23, 2011

I have a Netgear ReadyNAS NV in the basement, that I want to use to serve up video files over my network to a TV in the living room.

Now, I have a lot of files that HandBrake encoded and it gave the files an m4v suffix. Even when the files are in a codec that the TV can handle, it refuses to load them because of this suffix... so I want to rename them all.

This is fairly simple for files on a local filesystem. I can simply cd into the directory containing the files, and do something like the commands below.

Code:
$ for a in `ls`;
> do
> stem=`echo ${a} | cut -f1 -d"."` ;
> mv ${a} ${stem}.mpg ;

[Code]....

Although there are a few smb commands available (smbstatus, smbget, etc.), I've not found any commands like smbls or smbmv.

Are there any special commands or utilities around that can do the kind of thing I'm trying to do?

Ubuntu Servers :: Renaming Files Recursively From Folder

Mar 26, 2011

I'm trying to rename files recursively from a folder. I want to delete the & from every filename. i've searched the net and found the following script:

Code:
#!/bin/bash
dir=/whatever/directory
for file in `ls $dir` ; do
# ANYCASE TO UPPERCASE:
newname=`echo $file | tr '[a-z]' '[A-Z]'`
mv $dir/$file $dir/$newname
done
and changed it:

Code:
#!/bin/bash
dir=/home/test
for file in `find $dir -type f` ; do
#rename files containing &
newname=`echo $file` | tr '[&]' ''
mv $dir/$file $dir/$newname
done

But the for loop explodes the filename after each & sign, so i don't have a whole filename. if the file is named lorem & ipsum, the for loop will break it in 3 parts.

* mv: (coreutils)mv invocation. Rename files. So, desiring to give a .JPG extension to a jpeg file that had no extension (because I dug it out of my Firefox cache), I typed

Quote:

mv '/home/josh/Desktop/Natalie pictures/DEC8FFA5d01' *.jpg

That didn't rename the file; it made the file disappear from its folder. What did I do wrong?
