I am running 10.04 on an Acer Aspire One
Since my upgrade from Lucid my battery icon displays permanent full charge even when running without AC power. When the battery runs out, this leads to an immediate violent shut down, everything dies at once.
My power management settings for running on battery are as follows;

I am having several problems with what i believe to be gnome-power-management. Power management will randomly say that either i do, or don't have a battery. This means that the icon in the notification area does not appear, and I can not access the settings for on battery power. also, when i tell Ubuntu to suspend, it just goes to the screensaver and nothing happens. conky is still able to read the battery just fine, its power management thats having problems.
View 9 Replies View RelatedI've just installed Ubuntu 9.10 on an old PowerBook G4 I have, and when I go to Power Management, it doesn't provide the tab for battery-related settings (nor do I get the little battery/charge icon in the upper-right panel). I'm comparing this to the version of Ubuntu 9.10 I installed on my EeePC netbook, where those things are present. Is there anything I can do to get the Power Management preferences to recognize that the machine has a battery?
If it helps: the PowerBook had Ubuntu installed on it using the 9.10 "alternate" .iso, as I was having trouble burning the "desktop" .iso to a CD.
I just upgraded to f15 x86_64. I use a VPCCEB3Z1E vaio laptop and I noticed that my laptop can't last more than half past an hour running from battery in wireless productivity (just surfing the net and make some word processing, so nothing so heavy...) I use kde 4, installed cpupowerutils (replacement for cpufrequtils), put the modules acpi_cpufreq, cpufreq-ondemand -powersave and the other governors in /etc/rc.d/rc.local for loading them at boot. Edited profiles in powerdevil (every profile has cpupowerutils freq-set -g and the name of a governor) but i still notice no changes. How I can get a better power management on this laptop? Fan still runs at high speed.
View 3 Replies View RelatedOfflate I installed F11 i586 on my laptop. F11 shares the hard disk with Vista Home Premium 32-bit. The problem is that when running F11 (or even Ubuntu), my system shut off suddenly(not a normal OS shut down, but a sudden power off without any warning). This could have been a hardware trouble(heating) but it doesn't happen with Vista.

On the last release, I had this app installed where I could pick my power profile. I could use power conservatively, and performance would suffer a bit, but longer batt life,or I could have it automatically detect, or I could have the apps use all the power they want and then some. I'm looking to reinstall that app. What was the name of it?I can't remember, and so far, can't find.

Today my laptop battery died and after i plugged it in and restarted it said that networking was not enabled. hitting the networking key didn't re-enable it. i right clicked the wireless icon in the tray and clicked "enable networking" and it enabled it but no networks showed up as available and the networking status light on my keyboard stayed red. I've restarted the computer several times to no avail. anyone know what i need to do?
We are planning the migration fro Karmic to Lucid for our systems, these systems are custom Ubuntu installations, we create them using debootstrap and then running a script that installs desired packages, mainly X server and (optionally) fluxbox.
I've set up a hard drive with our current scripts (the only modifications were the change of lucid instead of karmic for update servers and removing usplash from our scripts), but I've found that pushing the power button would not shut down the system (we have no GDM or similar), the system does not respond to this event as used to do under Karmic.
Do you know where I can check/enable the system to shutdown when pushing the power button?
I am running a cli only based laptop for a special project; however, is there any terminal based simple text or GUI applications that will give me power remaining and other information about the battery? Looking for: power remaining, total power, WATTS, AMPS, etc.just the basic items and some other items, nothing to fancy.

View 4 Replies View RelatedI know how to set and have set my net-book gz5 running on lucid to stay on at all times.however unlike in xubuntu I don't have the option to change when the computer is critically low. I don't have the room to install xubuntu with my preferred gnome desktop wondered if anyone out thee knows where if there is a .config file that I can dictate the percentage of battery life before being considered critically low. ei now it seems to consider itself low at 15% which robs me of about 2 hours of usage id like to set it around 1%
View 5 Replies View RelatedAlright this is not a huge issue but a rather annoying one. I hook my laptop up to my lcd to watch movies all of the time. The problem is though I have selected and reselected many times for the screen to not power off after so many minutes of inactivity. But for some reason it doesnt work. If i set it to an 1 it still like every 5 minutes turns off my screen. Im running 9.10 on a toshiba satellite with an intel graphics card.

View 2 Replies View RelatedI just did a fresh installation of Kubuntu 10.10 on a laptop last night, which has a 1.6GHz Intel Core Duo CPU.
I was very disappointed to find that there appears to be no way to configure CPU frequency scaling in the System Settings. There were options for this in 10.04.
I prefer to have the CPU running at maximum speed when running on A/C. In Maverick, however, I have had to resort to installing cpufreq-utils, and setting the CPU cores to 'performance' from the command line.
I like this laptop a lot, but even many simple games run sluggishly if the CPU cores are not set to run at max GHz. (As a matter of fact, this machine is much more sluggish even with CPU cores running at maximum in 10.10 than was the case in 10.04.)
I wonder why such an important option would have been removed from the power management settings?
when i get the Graphics device driver on, then the power management not work. it can not change the CPU frequencies, and it can not change the LCD backlight and save the change. I try a lot, install laptop-mode-tools,and change thd setting, it still not work...

Ok, I am running a file server that can be accessed throughout the house. I was able to successfully wake from suspend and it works beautifully. Now what I need the computer to do is go to sleep after lets say 30 minutes of inactivity so that I never have to touch the computer and it will use minimal power until I need it.
Anyhow, I tried to set the settings in Power management and the only thing that happens is the display turns off. the suspend on the desktop works fine, I can type in sudo pm-suspend and that works fine. but the computer just wont go to suspend automatically by way of the power manager.
I have tried changing the /etc/pm/config.d/00sleep_module to say SLEEP_MODULE="uswsusp", but that only made the computer go into some crazy linux mode that I had to reboot from. I had to change SLEEP_MODULE="kernel" (actually, I left it blank as it is the default).
I also turned off my screensaver so there wouldn't be any confusion from that.
I also ran cat /var/log/pm-powersave.log and I got a long list with the following being one of the main texts that kept repeating. "/usr/lib/pm-utils/power.d/sched-powersave false:**sched policy powersave OFF"

View 9 Replies View RelatedI'm running 11.04 on my Dell SXPS 1645. Today I unplugged my laptop from AC power a few times and after about 10 minutes, Ubuntu would hang, not responding to anything. Frozen mouse, frozen keys. The ONLY thing I could do to get it out was to do a hard hardware restart by holding down the power button.
It happened twice on Skype (and I thought it was just the buggy 2.2 beta that was hanging my beautiful OS), once while installing a printer, and once while I was just futzin around on firefox.
I've got a Lenovo Thinkpad X201i. The problem I have is (since I've installed Xubuntu) every time I start up my laptop it just hangs with a little flashing white stripe in the top of the left corner (like every start up). Then when I shut down the laptop using the power button and start it up again it works. How can this be possible? On start up, it hangs, while on the restart it always works. Which means I have to restart my laptop every single time.
View 3 Replies View RelatedI have an issue where the screen on my laptop will not shut off with the power management tool. The Default Power Manager does not have an option for this.My screen will go blank after a set amount of time, but the lcd-backlight will remain on. I would want the power manager to shut the screen off completely (including turning off the lcd backlight) without shutting down the computer it-self. So the computer can continue to do what I left it to do in the case I forget to close the lid. With the screen shut off completely, will preserve the life of the back light and reduce power consumption.
Is there a better power manager app that will allow me to do this a tweak to the existing default power manager that will allow the functionality I am seeking? laptop was perfectly able to do this under a win-xp environment, so I know the machine is physically capable of doing this. Note: My WinXP OS and Ubuntu OS are on seperate physical drives so there is no dual boot issues. So when I am using one there is no trace of the other present
when I boot up ubuntu, the suspend and hibernate buttons will be missing and the alsa stuff wont work. When I select shutdown or restart or log out from the power menu ( the one that's missing the 2
buttons) it only logs off the user. I've tried reinstalling the kernel and updating grub for a solution to no avail. The only way to shutdown the system when this occurs is through a sudo halt command in terminal. I may have to use the command a few times until the computer will boot with sound and all of the suspend/hibernate buttons in place.
I have Lucid Lynx with Gnome and Kernel 2.6.32 installed. Which probelms can I get if I disable Power Manager (Power management daemon) from the startup?

I am having some serious speed/connection issues with my laptop's WiFi card, and it has been suggested to me to disable power management for it, just as an experiment. However, when I run "sudo iwconfig wlan2 power off," I receive the error:
"Error for wireless request "Set Power Management" (8B2C) : SET failed on device wlan2 ; Operation not permitted."
I've recently installed Ubuntu 10.04 and found the following problem: power management doesn't appear to be working. If I'm away from my computer for only a few moments, the screen is on dim when I return and I have to log on again. I've set the following states in Power Management: NEVER SWITCH OFF SCREEN and haven't ticked the DIM WHEN IDLE BOX. Can anyone help with this problem - it's infuriating. Sometimes when it is fully charged I remove the power cord, battery power comes down to 40%-41%. It never happened with Ubuntu, which gave quite a good battery performance. My question is when it is showing Laptop Battery 100% i.e. fully charged, if I remove the cord why it comes down to 40%-41% (and always in this range).

Plugged in this thing runs AMAZING, HDMI with HD video, I can run compiz 3d, full desktop advanced effects, HD video from ....., you name it. Just when I pull the cable out it slows down. I tried disabling ATI powerplay but that didnt help.
Is there a way I can toggle the performance, so that I can get "plugged in level performance" even when i'm on battery power? I'm not too bothered about how long the battery lasts. I'm usually always near an outlet.
