Ubuntu :: Executing Bash Script As Root In Terminal Via Shortcut In Main Menu?

Jul 31, 2011

I wrote bash script that uses zenity and a choice to install various programs, tested it and it works, but only when I call it from terminal. I wanted to add it in gnome main menu. The script is /home/eee/zenity.sh. In accessories I added an entry with command:

Code:
/home/eee/zenity.sh
, but since there is no terminal it starts zenity, but it does not work. I have also tried
Code:
gksu gnome-terminal -x /home/eee/zenity.sh

General :: Executing AT Commands On USB Modem?

Aug 13, 2010

I have a USB modem on a Debian install that I want to be able to use AT commands to diagnose, specifically for obtaining signal strength (RSSI). I know the command for this is AT+CSQ but I cannot seem to get the interface for issuing AT commands to work.

The modem is using /dev/ttyACM0 and when I try to use minicom, I type in AT commands and nothing is echoed to the screen (Yes, echo is turned on). Maybe I just don't know how to use minicom correctly.

Software :: Irexec Not Executing Commands

May 22, 2011

I have setup lirc on my htpc and it works perfectly, but I am trying to use irexec to execute commands from my remote controller, and this does not work.

Basically, I loosely based my setup on this thread at the XBMC forums (starting at step 3 because lirc is configured and runs the Slackware way !): [URL]

The thread on XBMC's forum uses irexec and irxevent to execute commands. I am not 100% sure why irxevent is used but I am interested to know why and what it really does...

In the meantime my .lircrc file looks like:

Code:
# Start XBMC
begin
remote = harmony2
prog = irexec

[Code]....

but irxevent wouldnt start normally. My understanding is that irxevent uses the display of the parent owner (in my case root since it is called from rc.local) so I tried to start it as normal user and it worked.

So on top of my problem executing commands with irexec, I would like to know how to execute a process as a different user so I can have irxevent started as a normal user by the system at boot time?

Ubuntu :: Running Commands On Login?

I have been trying to figure out how to automatically run terminal commands on login. For example, I want to run Firefox on login. When I run 'firefox' in terminal, it opens. This is what I tried:I went to System > Preference > Startup Applications and clicked on 'Add'. I gave it a name, typed 'firefox' into the command field and left the comment blank and added it to the list, making sure that the box was checked.

Ubuntu :: Custom Commands Before Login Time In Lucid?

Jul 24, 2010

I would like to run a few custom commands when booting: "xinput" to calibrate the touchscreen and a couple of "setkeycodes" to make special buttons responsive.

From within a session I need to do "sudo setkeycodes [etc]" - without root access there's a "couldn't get a file descriptor referring to the console" error message.

Ideally these commands would already be operational at the login screen, and without requiring entering a root password every time.

I've put the commands in an otherwise empty /etc/rc.local but this does nothing. Other posts mention bootscript.sh but I don't get how this is used; and the best way to do this seems to have changed between versions - so what's the proper Lucid way?

CentOS 5 Server :: Login As Postgres User And Enter Commands?

Sep 10, 2010

I've had a server setup working perfectly for the last 2 years. Today we installed a newer version of postgresql and recompiled apache/php.

Postgresql will not start now.

"service postgresql start" = /var/lib/pgsql/data is missing. Use "service postgresql initdb" to initialize the cluster first. To initdb we need to be as user postgres.

"su - postgres" = "no file or directory"

In /etc/passwd = postgres:x:26:26:PostgreSQL Server:/var/lib/pgsql:/bin/bash

how i can login as postgres user and enter these commands?

Networking :: Active Directory Login Returning Me To Login Screen?

Oct 28, 2009

I've very new to linux, so please excuse my ignorance. I am trying to setup a number of servers to authenticate against my Windows Server 2003 active directory. I have successfully done this with one computer (Dell Optiplex 755), but I can?t seem to get it to work with my servers (Dell PowerEdge R710). I am using Fedora 11. I have setup samba and pam and have successfully joined the network. Everything with winbind seems to be working properly and I can get all the user info, etc. When I log in with a local account, everything is fine. If I try to log in with an account from my domain through SSH, I see the message Code:/usr/bin/xauth: creating new authority file /home/apkelley/.XauthorityAfter that, nothing happens and it is as if I haven?t connected to anything. If I try to log into the actual server using the graphical interface, it starts logging me in, shows a blank screen for about a second, and then returns to the login screen as if nothing has happened.I would greatly appreciate any suggestions for how I might fix this problem or how to find out more information about the error. Here are my smb.conf and system-auth files:

/etc/samba/smb.conf
Code:

Ubuntu Networking :: Samba Does Not Respond To Commands In Terminal

Oct 25, 2010

I wanted to install Samba for file-sharing purposes on my home network, so I went ahead and installed the latest stable Samba release, but it doesn't respond to commands in terminal (i.e. sudo samba start, sudo samba stop, sudo samba restart, sudo samba /etc/init.d/samba restart...). My shared files are now viewable on other computers but completely unusable for file storage. Samba DID respond when I was using Samba4, but when I used Samba 4 I got this:

Code:
matthew@Server:~$ samba restart
Unknown parameter encountered: "max log size"
Ignoring unknown parameter "max log size"
Unknown parameter encountered: "syslog"
Ignoring unknown parameter "syslog"
Unknown parameter encountered: "passdb backend"
Ignoring unknown parameter "passdb backend"
Unknown parameter encountered: "unix password sync"
Ignoring unknown parameter "unix password sync" .....

So I either get a Samba that doesn't work at all (the current version), or a Samba that pretends to work but ignores all of my parameters, claiming that it doesn't recognize any of them. I searched through synaptic package manager to make sure I have every single code or management file that could possibly be helpful for using Samba.
