I'm trying to set up the following "server" system. (I say "server" because I'm really running ubuntu-desktop 10.04 LTS):
I have set up Samba and allowed guest access to my /media/Share/data using Windows 7. Everything works great, I can create folders, add files, etc. However I noticed that when I add files or folders via my mapped drive in Windows 7, it defaults to permissions that do not allow Deluge to access them. I realized that if I go back to the server and give it
Code:
sudo chmod 0777 /media/Share/data/(folder or file)
Deluge can now access the files. I don't want to have to modify permissions every time I add a new torrent to Deluge's watch folder which is /media/Share/data/Torrents.
How do I configure Samba (or linux, or windows) to give rwx permissions when I add a file or torrent via windows? And vice versa, if deluge downloads a file and moves it to completed downloads (which I haven't been able to get this far yet) will I be able to access it via Windows 7?

It's more just straight networking rather than Linux related - possibly a rather large gap in my knowledge.Been asked to set up a Linux firewall / router for a friend, and he wants an external address on his PC and his firewall. He's got a /30... ISP seem to think this is normal. My understanding was different router interfaces should be in different subnets when it comes to addressing. eg:
WAN 1.1.1.1LAN 192.168.1.1/24 (then PC 192.168.1.2)This is how I'd set up an enterprise router, and from memory how I had to regurgitate networking for my Cisco exams. But they would have been large devices within a BGP environment, how does this compare to home use? Can you have interfaces on the same router within in the same subnet? I'm looking for the real world answer - not my CCNA answer or the config addressing scheme I just blindly followed...Is this right or can different interfaces be in the same subnet? If they can be in different subnets How would you do that with an eternal 1.1.1.1/30? egWAN 1.1.1.1LAN (what IP?) then PC 1.1.1.2Would you actually just set the router up as a /29 and then use the additional IP addresses for the LAN NIC on the router? (yes I'm aware you couldn't route to where it had actually been allocated)
Then with that how do I route the 1.1.1.1/30? Which interface do I point it at? Even with a /29 I'd still have a routing issue right?Or are the ISP expecting you to do something with NAT / port forwarding. (and yes I could do this to get it working - but I want to understand it better) I'm asking the question here, because rather than just wanting a magic file to get things working, I'd actually rather understand the principles rather than just press a button and have it work.

So I keep reading that bonding ethernet devices is supposed to be easy. I have followed several tutorials and tried a few things on my own, and I can't seem to get it right. I currently have a setup that allows me to ping internally on my network, but when I try to ping externally I get the error:

Before I bonded the interface my connection worked fine. Here are my config files. I am running centos 5.3 on a virtual machine.

first of all I am sorry about the mess in the question, I hope I am being clear enough.
I am using VectorLinux 6.0 standard, kernel 2.6.27.12.
iptables v1.4.0
Deluge v1.18
the problem is that as soon as I do
Code:
iptables -A INPUT -j DROP
Deluge hangs and stops responding.
I am trying to make iptables to drop everything except tcp,udp 6887 (for torrent) and except established and related. iptables -L looks like so:
[Code]...
Edit:
Now I see that Firefox also hangs if I try to right click a tab when I have iptables -A INPUT -j DROP.

I have finished something simple and would like some people to test it, and when I gave my url of my website that sits on my computer to someone, the response was that she kept getting messages saying that connection has been reset. She tried for a couple of times and could not see my website, which the address is accurate.
Are there specific things I need to do to allow users to see my site? Yet, why does she not get messages saying that "failed to access" or something like that?

We've just setup an Ubuntu server as our main web server. The site's domain, say mydomain.com, has its DNS hosted elsewhere. A records are pointed to the IP address of the new server, so far so good. Email is however handled elsewhere. Sending mail to _anything but_ mydomain.com works fine. However when i try to send mail to me@mydomain.com the mail ends in /var/mail/me
how to deliver the mail externally?

I have 2 servers operating on my home network. One server hosts Bind9 and a few web sites. The other is an Ubuntu repo mirror that I recently configured (10.1.10.26). Inside my network, requests to the olyubuntu.nwlinux domain function as it should. However, external requests do not get forwarded. Instead, they end up at my DNS box at 10.1.10.25. Again, internal requests are forwarded correctly.Any red flags pop-up as to why this is occurring? Firewalls are not an issue.

Usually the menu bar, and menus, are displayed within the applications main window. With a small screen this obviously wastes space so my idea is to reserve a location, small square space probably on a corner, on the screen that when clicked it will pop out the current selected applications menu, allow selection, and then disappear again. The application itself would look fullscreen, or if windowed will still not have a menu bar but access available via the "square."
Likewise instead of the usual task bar and "applications/places/system" menus (ala, ubuntu) a second square would be reserved which would pop-out and show the running tasks, followed by the menus, and allow selection, then disappear. Is this possible with GTK+ as it stands, as I'm guessing that by default everything must be contained within an applications main window?
Although having said that, gimp allows the tool windows to be external to the edited document, so perhaps it would be possible to make the menu bar into a toolbox? I guess the difficult problem would be how to make the currently selected applications "tool square" be on top when there could be multiple applications running. The "tool square" and "task/menu square" could be transparent (maybe just an outline) so that although always there they wouldn't hide any underlying windows/programs/etc.
Basically the idea is to get rid of wasted screen, in ubuntu (on gtk/gnome) a minimum of 5 "bars" is wasted screen real-estate:- 1, Running aplications: 2, Ubuntu's main menu bar: 3, Applications status bar: 4, Applications menu bar: 5, Applications description (min/max/close) bar. Take all the above and replace it with two clickable, potentially invisible, squares say where the default "hide all windows" and "deleted trashcan" icons currently reside.

This has happened several times now, with 9.10 and 10.04. I back up my photos periodically to external drives, using Nautilus. At the next attempted login Gnome won't start and sometimes gives power manager incorrect installation error.
First time this happened I was stumped and eventually did a clean install. Second time, I found advice elsewhere in this forum to solve this by emptying root trash, which did the trick. This time, however, root trash has nothing in it and 2 users trash were insignificant (I emptied them all anyway with rm -r). Tried looking for enormous directories but couldn't find a smoking gun. I would rather not end up doing another clean install - a painful and extreme solution. I'm continuing to look for solutions to the immediate problem, but my question really is, what causes this and how do I prevent it in the future? I've run Computer Janitor regularly and ran apt-get clean but no help. Should I do all my large scale copying from terminal? I'm not a total noob, but close.

I created LAMP server with a wordpress site. I created a sites-available file for the wordpress file pointing to the wordpress directory. Within my server it goes to the site properly. However I also made this server a DNS server, had another test pc use it as a DNS server and it only got the default apache page unless I added /wordpress to the url which makes it point to the directory within /var/www/ that it belongs, but then the wordpress links don't work and this is not what I want it to do anyway. I do not understand why it is working properly internally but not externally. It makes me think maybe the sites-available file is not allowing outside access appropriate permission to use it or something. Can somebody please point me in the right direction I have been working on this for weeks and I am starting to get really frustrated with it. Tell me what config files can help you figure out my issue. Also I eliminated the default index.html file so it wouldn't use it, then placed the index.php file from wordpress in /var/www/ root but in that configuration it doesn't load anything by default but will still work if you point to /wordpress. I believe I have to make some change to my apache2 configs to allow outside PCs to be pointed to the right root directory for the virtual host like is being done internally, I just don't know where to start.

Have previously moved my ssh server from 22 to 4455 just by moving the port in sshd_config. This is done to minimize the log entries resulting from brute force attacks. However, it seems like Zimbra and other local services expect to find the ssh service locally available on port 22, so I figured it's better to move the port in the firewall so that it remains configured on port 22 in sshd_config, and instead use iptables with a nat/port rewrite to move 4455 incoming to 22 locally.
Isolated this works as long as I also keep allowing port 22, but the moment I close port 22, port 4455 is also dead, which sort of defies the purpose

I have Ubuntu 10.04 x86 installed, trying to get teamspeak 3 beta30.I have followed this guide: http://robert.penz.name/296/howto-in...u-10-04-lucid/
And can not get my network setup correctly to allow people to connect externally from my LAN. I have forwarded every relevant port I could find to the computer hosting TS, I forwarded them first as their respective protocols, and then as the combined UDP/TCP. I tried Forwarding single port numbers, and then port ranges.I have also tried uninstalling selinux.I have tried connecting directly to my cable modem with the server.I had this working perfectly three months ago with all the same software, using the same guide I listed above. The only thing I can imagine has changed is my operating system itself with system updates.
My network looks like:
Comcast cable modem--->Netgear WNR3500L Router----->Ubuntu 10.04 x86 desktop edition
what else I could possibly check? I can connect to and manage the TS server fine using localhost:9987 or 192.168.1.x:9987, it just wont allow any connections from outside the network.

I am running a linux server with Ubuntu 10.04. It runs a deluge daemon. Deluge 1.2.2 with python 2.6. I have the client running in Ubuntu 11.04.
The problem is, some of the plugins require python 2.6 while I have 2.7. After some digging I have found that 11.04 supports and has installed python 2.6 /usr/bin/python2.6
I have edited all the deluge files
Code:
/usr/local/bin/deluge
/usr/local/bin/deluge-gtk
/usr/local/bin/deluge-console

whenever i have started "deluge" (a bittorrent client), my laptop simply freeezes within 5 minutes. Its something I haven't seen before ever with Ubuntu - the keyboard/mouse stops responding, and the CAPS-LOCK key starts blinking...and there's NO way to get the system back without a hard reboot
Another thing...I've noticed a zombie process called "netns" running which I suspect to be causing this - its always taking the pid 13, and its impossible to kill - I tried using kill, killall, pkill from su prompt, and it didn't go away at all !!
If there's anyway I can send logs/dumps for analysis to ubuntu team, how to do so and i'll do the needful to get them...

I've just setup a virtual Ubuntu 10.10 machine on my server running Deluge and WebUI. The WebUI seems to work fine, but if I upload a torrent with a total size over 2Gb I just get an 'error' as soon as the torrent is run.The download folder is a CIFS share to a NAS (Acer Altos EasyStore) folder, I can download torrents that are less than 2Gb in total without any problems.I can read/write large files from the command line or Nautilus but any torrent uploaded to Deluge larger than 2Gb is flagged as 'error' as soon as it is run (with no actual error listed in the torrent details).
