Ubuntu Networking :: Check What Is Being Sent
Jul 21, 2011
My netbook running ubuntu 10.04 seems to be constantly transmiting data to the internet at about 100 kib when I am not even on the internet ? Is there a way to check what is being sent and how can I check if my netbook has been hijacked ?
Kev
I was running transmission in the background and I hadn't noticed. As soon as I turned transmission off the internet went static.

I just have a wifi network that I want to be hidden. I configured my router so to hide my SSID and as I had the settings for my wireless I can connect at it with no problem. I just would like to know if there is a way to check that my wlan is really not visible to other users. If i type Quote: sudo iwlist scan in my terminal I can still see it. How can I check if the "hidden" setting is working or not?

I am new to Debian but not Linux-based systems. I have been experimenting a lot with Debian Lenny/Squeeze. I am growing more comfortable each day with the Debian design. Yet there remain many unexplored areas. I am creating a migration check list. Things to check, prepare, or reconfigure when moving from one Linux-based system to Debian.
I have a good computer background and my current check list probably is fairly good. Yet I would appreciate input and opinions from experienced Debian users of things to watch in such a migration. Login defs, passwd/group files, different directory locations, keymaps, services and daemons, etc. I am not too concerned with the desktop as I plan to stick with KDE 3.5 for a while and I can basically move those settings across.

I remember back when I used Windows, there was a shell command call "net view", which would allow me to see all the other users on my wireless net.
Is there any command or application that can do this? I dont mind if it is a terminal command either, but I would really like to know a way that I could see other users on my network.

I'm using Ubuntu 9.10. My internet connection is an ADSL which I have set up using "pppoeconf". The connection starts at boot up. I can also start it if needed by using "sudo pon dsl-provider" and can stop it by using "poff dsl-provider".Recently I noticed that when I start my computer, there is some program (or programs) which is connecting automatically to the internet and downloading and uploading a lot of data. The data transferred can exceed 200 mb or 300 mb in an hour. I don't know what is being uploaded or downloaded.I know for sure that no file sharing programs like bittorrent clients are started at bootup so it is strange that this much data to be downloaded and uploaded without me sharing files or downloading files explicitly. The update software also does not run by default as I have opted to start it manually.
Is there any application which shows the programs that are connected to any particular port and transmitting and receiving data?In Windows XP I use a program called "What's Running" which clearly lists the programs using the different ports in the local machine and the remote IP addresses that the program is connected to. It also shows which program is transmitting and receiving data at any point in time. Is there any similar program for Linux? My internet connection is a data limited package otherwise I probably would not have bothered.

i have been using ubuntu for just over 3 months now and i completely love it. but heres where the problem starts (and please let me know if i am in the right topic) i recently installed ubuntu 10.10 on my roommates computer, the reason being is that the IT department here on college "fixed it" for him, now it wont connect to the internet. it will however connect if we use an ethernet cable from the other laptop to his. his had originally windows xp then got upgraded to vista. i was wondering if there was a way to completely reset the networking wifi card if that might be the problem.
my roommates computer is a DakTech PlaidBook, however i do not know on how to check the system information in the terminal to tell you what wifi card he has and such, all i want is to have internet back on his computer again.

I am trying to connect an NFS shared to my multimedia Box. I have no problem connecting it manually but when I tried to connect automatically upon booting up the multimedia I have to wait for the wireless to be connected before attempting to mount the NFS file system on the media box.Now I am sure that this can be easily implemented using a script however I do not have much experience with that. I am not sure about the syntax for the loop statement. I know what is required for the mount and other stuff. Is the use of the ping a good idea. It takes about 2 second for the ping to return when fails so after 40 to 60 sec it should stop.

Normally I use 'netstat -an' to determine if a daemon is listening on a specific port. The excerpt of this command below doesn't list things like vnc (5900) on ipv4. It does however show it on ipv6. My issue is I want to know how to determine if it is indeed listening on ipv4 as would normally be seen with 0.0.0.0:5900. It would appear that all ipv4 ports are internally being redirected to ipv6. Of course this does simplify things, but it also leaves me unable to reliably determine the ipv4 listening status. How I can tell at a glance if a specific ipv4 port is being listened on? Is there a way to force netstat to list the ipv4 listens specifically?
Code:
art@eee1:/proc/sys/net/ipv6$ netstat -an
Active Internet connections (servers and established) .....

Just installed Ubuntu 10.04 on my Acer laptop last night. I wasn't able to surf the net at first but after searching these forums, managed to get it right (changed setting in firefox). I was able to use update manager and the software program ok (downloading and installing). I am using a adsl via wifi. Networked pcs and my NAS/samba work fine
My current problem is that while I can surf the net and download updates etc, I can't seem to get email and chat working, it just gives a timeout error for some reason.

I'm working on a userspace application that needs to find if the kernel has a route configured for a particular destination address, and what port it would be routed from. I'm hoping there is a simple kernel call that will do this for me, but haven't been able to find it yet :-)
I don't want to actually send a packet to do this, just query the kernel if where it *would* send the packet if I did.
The only method I've come up with is to get the kernel routing table through rtnetlink then check each entry to see if it matches my destination address. I guess this will work (after one or two tries to get the logic right ;-) ) but I'd rather do a single call if there is one.
