Ubuntu Networking :: Internet Tethering Via Phone Bluetooth
Apr 10, 2011
I have a samsung messager touch R631 with 3G capability and I am trying to connect my laptop to the internet through it via bluetooth. Everything worked when I had the MAC OSx on my laptop, and after I switched to ubuntu 10.04LTS (32 bit) I cannot get it to work again. I did some searching and checked a few things out, but Everything I've tried with the BlueZ isn't working. It shows I'm connected, but it just doesn't work...is there any way to get it to work or another program or something I need? these are the 2 pages I refferenced...[url] [url]

It's installed as a mobile broadband connection. Only works if my phone is plugged in during boot, otherwise plugging in my phone does nothing. For example, I booted my netbook earlier today but my phone wasn't plugged in. Tethering did not work, it just acts as if it isn't present. I rebooted (with my phone still attached) and now tethering magically works.

I've just loaded up Fedora 13 and I like the new feature Fedora have which allows you to use your mobile as a internet modem over bluetooth. Is it possible to update my Network Manager in ubuntu 10.04 to this new version 0.8.997 through the package manager? Is there a PPA or something I could use?
Would just updating this add the bluetooth ability or would I have to update gnome-bluetooth package as well? Is it doable at all or should I just wait till the next Ubuntu comes out?

I've a Nokia 2323 Classic which I want to use to access to the internet on my laptop.
A friend of mine with a Dell Inspiron 15 running Windows 7 could connect to the net by just pairing up and right clicking on my phone's icon in the devices menu and selecting connect to internet via access point.
I've an eMachines E725 which lacks bluetooth. To overcome this I used a dongle which was able to successfully pair up with my phone via the bluetooth menu in preferences.
So what next ? How do I use the phone to connect to the internet directly via access point ?
I noticed that I did not need any operator related settings to do so in windows 7 and the phone worked regardless of SIM card present so I assume it should work similarly in linux.
What is left is to ask the system to treat it as an internet access device and use it that way.
How do I do it ? I don't mind a commandline way but a GUI would be better because I'm not the only person using my laptop.

What I currently do is run this script -
Code:
rfcomm release 0
CHANNEL = `sdptool search --bdaddr=00:21:FE:A5:C9:4A dun | grep Channel | cut -c14`
rfcomm bind 0 00:21:FE:A5:C9:4A ${CHANNEL}
wvdial e71bt
And my /etc/wvdial.conf is configured for AT&T connection here in the US.
Question is, is there anyway I can integrate it with NetworkManager, instead of having to run this script?
There's a "Broadband" option on NetworkManager, but I am not able to get it to recognize my cell phone as a modem. The bluetooth applet only allows for file transfer

So I can't get the bluetooth tethering to work still! I have been trying for about 2 weeks. The phone pairs, in blueman I set the phone as a trusted device and click network access point. It then flashes up on the iPhone tethered with the blue banner. Blueman says it is connected. But no net access. Network connections shows no new connections either. Weird, I thought it would appear in there. Is there anything I can do to force it to add the bluetooth link as a network connection?

I have both Jaunty and Windows XP installed on my laptop (dual boot), and I have successfully tethered (via Bluetooth) my cellphone in Windows, but can't get tethering to work in Jaunty.
In Windows, when I paired my phone with my laptop using Bluetooth, Windows assigned two COM ports for Bluetooth to use. Then I configured dial-up networking, and all I had to specify was the dial string (*99**1*1#). Windows treats my cellphone as if it were a modem connected via a serial port. Works great.
When I pair my phone to the laptop when running Jaunty, I don't ever see serial ports getting configured as I do in Windows. And I've read that when the Bluetooth pairing takes place in Ubuntu, the networking wizard should start, but it does not. So, I go into network connections and create a new connection under the MOBILE BROADBAND tab (I check "connect automatically"). When I'm finished creating the connection, it says "never" to the right of the connection name, but I'm not sure what that is indicating. When I left-click the network manager icon on my desktop, it does not show any connections from which I can choose. I have no Internet connectivity.
I have proved that the Bluetooth link between Jaunty and my cellphone IS working. I have been successful sending files from my phone to Jaunty, using Bluetooth.
Am I going about setting up tethering incorrectly ?

I have been looking for a piece of software that can do the following; however, I am unsure what category of technology it would fall under. In addition, I am not sure if I am describing it correctly. I am looking for a piece of software that will allow a Bluetooth connection between my desktop, and cell phone. I then can place a Internet based call (SIP software, Skype, Google Talk) via the cell phone, which has been connected to the desktop system by Bluetooth.
I want to be able to receive and send calls via the cellphone, but use Internet for my calls. What got me thinking about this is a house phone I have by Panasonic, which has the capability to pair your cell phone via Bluetooth to the main base-station. This allows the option to answer calls to my house number, via my cell phone.

I am running ubuntu 10.10 and supplying my internet connection with EasyTether on my Motorola Droid 2. I've got my laptop internet working great, but I've tried to follow a couple connection sharing guides and they don't seem to work with my PS3. So the setup is that EasyTether provides the internet connection and an ethernet cable connects the laptop and ps3. I have even tried using FireStarter, but it says eth0 (the connection between laptop and ps3) is not ready.
So here's the question: What should I do to allow my ps3 to access the internet? I've tried manual and automatic settings on my ps3 and neither worked. I believe the problem is with my laptop's settings.
Here's what happens when I do a connection test on my PS3 (automatic config)
Obatain IP Address - Failed
And when I do it manually
Obtain IP Address - Succeeded
Internet Connection - Failed

I've just got a nice HTC Desire (ie almost the same model as the Nexus One), and it can work as a modem for accessing the internet. After googling this, I've found out that on debian it works straight without adding any package, just as the pjone is connected. This is not the case on slackware 13... Has anyone got this to work already?

The KDE 4.7 announcment states:
The Plasma Workspaces now also offer much improved network management, including experimental support for NetworkManager 0.9 as well as Bluetooth tethering, 3G, VPN, MAC spoofing and other advanced networking options.
However, I don't see any options for Bluetooth tethering in the bluedevil or network manager applets. So, could someone explain how to do bluetooth tethering in KDE 4.7.
I am running OpenSUSE 11.4, KDE 4.7, plasmoid-networkmanagment 0.9.svn1192577-7.2 and bluedevil 1.0.2-3.8.1.

I actually have two problems: I couldn't get DUN to work with Ubuntu for a while and then one day it just magically worked and would let me find the device and connect to it. And then it broke again. So in my effort to fix the problem it looks like Bluetooth went completely off the rails. When I try to add a Bluetooth device through the manager it just keeps spinning with "Searching for Devices" but the spinning finds nothing (it would run for an eternity if I let it, it seems). hcitool scan reports "Scanning ..." and then drops back to command prompt. hciconfig notes the device is up. The device has no soft/hard locks on it. If anyone has a CLUE about what it could be.
Obvious note: My phone is in bluetooth mode and discoverable so that isn't the problem.
If I make the computer visible, my phone DOES NOT pick up it's there. Also, bluetooth works fine on the Fedora USB stick.

I have an iPhone and I am trying to get Internet tethering to work. I know tethering works on the phone as I successfully got it running under windows. I followed the instructions at the following site
[URL]
I ran the following commands
Firstly I installed dependencies with yum:
yum install libimobiledevice libimobiledevice-devel git gcc
Next I downloaded and compiled ipeth. Note: to do this I also had to install kernel headers, I also had to edit the ipheth.c file as per the instructions on the site for fedora 14 (see below for more)
git clone git://github.com/dgiagio/ipheth.git
cd ipheth/ipheth-pair
make
sudo make install
cd ../ipheth-driver/
sudo make install
[Code]....
This allowed me to successfully make the kernel driver. Once this was made I also copied the config file for the kernel driver to /usr/modipheth.d folder as per the readme instructions in the ipheth*folder.
When I type modprobe ipheth it doesn't state it's an incorrect command. I then plugged in my iPhone. Fedora detected it was plugged in and loaded the iPhone logo on the desktop. Internet tethering is turned on within the phone, however network manager does not see it as a device.

I have a liveusb running Fedora 11 on my hp laptop. I would like to use my T-Mobile Dash 3G unlimited data connection. I have seen many posts regarding wvdial, modem scripts, etc that are going a little over my head. I was able to connect my phone to the laptop, but when I tried to initiate internet sharing on the phone via Bluetooth PAN, nothing happened on the computer. I was connected but not able to do anything.
I saw some developer in a blog mention that he had put Bluetooth PAN support in Fedora 12. Is this not available in F11? Should I try moving to a F12 liveusb for this?
Has anybody had success getting a Tmobile 3G to work with F11?
I would rather use the USB connection so I could charge simulteously, but this looks a lot tricker.

Devices are paired, sending files from laptop to phone no problem. I think, there is a problem with permissions to write into a public dir. Picture 1. Permissions settled for shared 'Public' dir. Picture 2. Grey-out options in Bluetooth 'receive file' dialog. What to install into system to resolve that issue? Or, is there another solution?

I have an iphone, I am trying to get internet connectivity to that phone through wifi. I dont have a wifi router. But i do have a laptop with wifi card. I am connecting to internet via cable modem. In win7 I used to create an accesspoint and do the ics from ethernet card to share via wifi card. It used to work perfectly.
Now as I am sing ubuntu, i want to do the same. I have intalled firestarter, and shared the internet connection through wifi card(wlan0).After this I created an accesspoint using the gnome network applet. Now i can connect my ifone to ths accesspoint. But there is no internet connectivity in my fone.

I have a Samsung phone (S3310) and I'm trying use it as a modem to access the net on 10.04. I set up a Mobile broadband connection (under network connections) and I'm pretty sure the settings are correct because it works on a Nokia phone with the same service provider.
When I plug in my Data Cable and set it to Samsung PC Studio mode, my phone isn't detected as a modem. I just tried wvdialconf and it says "No modem detected". I'm guessing that maybe I'm missing some drivers here. what I can do get the phone detected as a modem.

I thought this will be as simple as in Windows 7 (connectify+virtual router). But it's not. So far I've managed to install a driver for an usb wifi dongle and now Ubuntu sees it
Code:
$ iwconfig
lo no wireless extensions.
eth0 no wireless extensions.
wlan0 unassociated Nickname:"<WIFI@REALTEK>"
[Code].....
Could it be that the wifi interface is down or something?
PS. when I left click on network manger, I see that under wireless networks it's written "disconnected".
