Ubuntu Networking :: Autoconnect To Multiple Name-schemed Networks On A City Bus?

May 25, 2010

I do a lot of work on the Seattle bus system on my Jolicloud netbook (I'm a hardcore Kubuntu user, and Jolicloud is based on Ubuntu Netbook). All Seattle buses have free wifi. They have a name scheme like "ST_9545" for the 545 from Redmond to Seattle, or "ST_7483" for whatever. You get the idea...all the free wifi on the buses are "ST_****".

Here's what I want. I want to autoconnect to whatever my current bus's wifi network is based on a name scheme. "ST_****" will be the name of the open wifi network on the bus. How do I set it up so my netbook automatically finds and connects to an open wifi network with that specified naming schema?

Ubuntu Networking :: Multiple Network Connections On Different Networks?

Sep 20, 2010

I am total newby in Ubuntu 10.04. I have just installed it in my office where I have two networks card one connect to a router giving the internet access and the other connected to the windows based work network providing access to the work network sources. In XP everything works fine as I can keep both connections alive and have the results I want.

However although I don't know how to do it in Ubuntu 10.04. Till now I have setup the first connection directly to my router and I have internet access but I cannot set the other one. Another question is how I can force ubuntu to use the router connection as the default one when I log in.

Networking :: Multiple (NIC's, Types, Etc.) Networks Use A Single DCHP?

Jul 8, 2010

I know a fair amount about setting up a simple network but I'm curious about setting up a more complex topology...For example...A "box" has two NIC's acting as a bridge, normally this would involve two distinct networks (ie. 192.213... and 192.214...) is it possible that this physical set up can create a single network (192.213... 192.213...) resolving IP's from either a DCHP on the "box" or a DCHP server somewhere else on "one side of the box"likewise with differing physical network types, a "box" with a NIC and a TCP/IP over usb setup connected to another device with TCP/IP over usb (OTG/Gadget) so that all the IP's are on one logical network.

Ubuntu Networking :: How To Make Wifi Autoconnect

May 6, 2010

I have installed Xubuntu 10.4 (Lucid) on a PC at my uncle's. He is the happy owner of a Netgear wg121 wireless usb-adapter.

I have followed the instructions concerning installation of the ndiswrapper here:
[URL]

The wg is up and running and everything seems to work perfect... except that, when I reeboot and log in, I have to issue the following commands again, to make the network initialize the wep-encrypted connection. If I do not issue these commands, the wifi-part of the Xubuntu network manager (I don't know the exact name of the program) is invisible in the menu or anywhere on the desktop. (It just says no network where the wifi should be appended). But when I issue these commands in a terminal, then the adapter (wg121) opens and connects to the network:

sudo depmod -a
sudo modprobe ndiswrapper
I have tried the command:
sudo ndiswrapper -m

in order to make Xubuntu connect automatically on opening, but no success. When i look through the log it says something about a .conf file, but not which and how, so I'm a bit lost.

Fedora Networking :: Changing Hostname Disables Autoconnect?

Feb 13, 2009

After installation, I changed the hostname of my computer, using system-config-network. However, after every reboot, it no longer wants to automatically connect to the network. The only way I could fix this was to remove NetworkManager-gnome and install knetworkmanager and use it to create a new connection. There was a flag there to autoconnect.

The other problem is that the hostname never shows on my network. My other PCs all have visible hostnames. One is an Ubuntu box and the other Windows XP. These machines can be pinged by hostname. The Fedora box can only be reached from the other PCs by specifying the numeric IP address.

I've checked the usual places and the hostname is correctly specified. Entering the 'hostname' command returns the correct hostname on the Fedora box. I am running Fedora 10.

Fedora Networking :: NetworkManager Doesn't Autoconnect On Login

Jun 14, 2009

Kinda fed up with NetworkManager. Since trying the betas of F11 on my laptop, i've had endless bad experience with it.

Installed version: 0.7.1

Aside from the description below, please let me know what detailed system info you want to see (specific commands appreciated).

When i log in, the applet loads. However, it doesn't connect to the last Wifi connection i used. My SSID is hidden, so i click on the applet and choose "Connect to hidden wireless network". i see my stored connection in the drop-list. i select it, and all fields are greyed out, the WPA key is blank, and the Connect button is disabled.

Leaving that dialog, i delete my stored connection and re-create it manually, setting all the information correctly. i have DSL, using my DSL modem in bridging mode, and for some reason NetworkManager doesn't retrieve the DNS entries from the modem, whereas Windows does. So i have to set the connection to "DHCP (Address Only)" and manually add the IPs for my DNS.

However, the connection doesn't initiate, so i click the applet again and attempt again to connect to my hidden SSID, using the newly created profile. Same problem: no WPA key, all boxed disabled, and Connect also disabled.

The ONLY way i can get this thing to connect is by deleting my stored connection, clicking to connect to a hidden SSID, and create the connection from the New dialog. However, then i still have to go into Edit Connections and set the DHCP and DNS correcly before i can reach outside.

This is ridiculous, and i haven't been messing with any other configuration. i had a thread when F11 was still in beta where i had inconsistent results with NetworkManager. After thinking i got it fixed with some help, and discovering it wasn't, i decided to wait for the final release to see if it would work any better.

(automatically connect to the last active connection), consistently (connects when it loads at login every time), Otherwise, if there's a different connection manager, i'm open to that as well. Especially if the alternate connection manager can automatically retrieve DNS settings the way Windows can.

Ubuntu Networking :: Using Tether Or Ad-hoc Networks Causes Headaches With Other Networks?

Apr 16, 2011

I am trying to configure my android phone (rooted Eris running kaossfroyo 2.2) to be used as a midi controller. Which I am having enough trouble with as it is but it has raised an annoying issue that occurred a month ago when I used the phones tethering network with my laptop. After connecting the laptop to the phones network (either tether, or an Ad-hoc network created using the network manager) I am unable to switch to other networks. In other words when I'm done with the phone-laptop connection I cannot connect my laptop to my home network! When I click on the other network connection I can see that it is attempting to connect in the upper right corner of the desktop (the network icon) but it will not make the connection.

What happens is that the network indicator will make the little circle graphic as if it is trying to connect but it never will display the other circle as green indicating that it has connected. but when I disconnect from the home network that is not connecting I will get a message underneath that will say that ad-hoc network disconnected! If I am switching from the android tether it will say Android-Tether disconnected etc. Even though when I click on network manager it shows that I am attempting to connect to the home network (labeled LIBERTY in my case) upon disconnection it shows the ad-hoc or tether connection being disconnected.

I am absolutely baffled by this! The issue persists even after deleting the ad-hoc connection from the wireless settings tab!!! I would speculate that for some reason the laptop is attempting to connect to the previous ad-hoc connection despite me wanting it to connect to LIBERTY. I am very confused and hope someone can lead me in the right direction.

CentOS 5 Networking :: Multiple Nics With Multiple Gateway ?

Jun 16, 2009

I have a CentOS 5.3 box with three network interfaces in it. Each interface is attached to a separate VLAN and I want traffic to stay on each network segment. What I cant figure out is why I cannot get each interface to have its own gateway and everything gets sent through the default gateway. The basically takes my possible 3Gb total bandwidth and throws it down a single 1Gb pipe. Then on top of that, if I take down the interface (ifdown) that has the current default gateway,I loose contact to the other two interfaces. When I look at the routes, each one of the interfaces shows the gw as 0.0.0.0 and defers to the default route. So I delete the route and try to add a new route with:

[root@testsan ~]# ip route add 10.1.15.0/24 via 10.1.15.1 dev eth2

but end up with the error:

RTNETLINK answers: Network is unreachable

[root@testsan sysconfig]# cat network

Ubuntu Networking :: Gateway With 2 Red Networks?

basically i want all traffic to go to internet except for say 203.x.x.x which i want routed to the bDSL router and let it handle it. Ive dome some reading and it seems ipcop and smoothwall cant do it so i was hoping with some tricky work maybe i can get ubuntu to do it for me.

Ubuntu Networking :: No Networks Showing Up ?

Aug 15, 2010

I just bought a new toshiba c655 laptop and had windows 7 on it. i made the dual boot partition on it, yada yada yada, anyway, on the windows partition i can see two networks at my house. one is mine, one is my neighbors. but when i go to the ubuntu side of things not a single wifi network shows up. i did a little combing of the forums and decided to try installing the ndisgtk package which i obviously need internet for. i thought i would plug it into an ethernet cable running straight from the modom and i could connect and download no problem. however. this has turned out to be quite a mistake. ubuntu does not even recognize the fact i have an ethernet cable plugged in. this may or may not be related, but niether my ipod or my cell phone does not show up when i plug those in and when i try to mount them i get an error message that says they could not be found. Im running 10.04.
