Ubuntu Multimedia :: Watching Movies In Any Video Player
Jun 15, 2010I'm just getting started with Ubuntu 64-Bit. Basically, I have Totem Movie Player and VLC Media Player installed and every time I watch a movie in either one of them. If I tab out of them or minimize them, when I bring the media player back up the screen is black. The sound still works perfectly but I can't see the movie and I've tried several media players out and they all do the same thing. Basically I can't multitask or bring up anything else while I watch a movie or I have to restart the player because of the media screen going black.
I'm not sure if my computer specs will help but here they are:
Ubuntu 10.04 Lucid 64-Bit
Intel Xeon X3210 2.13GHz Quad
4GB DDR2-800 RAM
ATI Radeon 4870 512MB Videocard

Feb 22, 2010I have been away from Linux in general and Ubuntu since 2006, but now wish to make Linux, and probably the Ubuntu distribution, my main operating system, especially for the Internet. I have been using Open Office since version 1.0, so no training or migration is necessary there. However, I have one challenge with my Ubuntu 9.1 ... movies which play under Windows will not play in Ubuntu. Under Windows Firefox needs Adobe Flash Player 10 to play these videos ... is there some open source software that will give Ubuntu Firefox the same capability?

Apr 3, 2010I've installed Ubuntu 9.10 and the prime reason for giving it a go is due to the media center capability with apps such as Moovida and LinuxMce.
Unfortunately during video playback [either divx or flash] there appears to be a random line or lines which flickers on the screen when the video is in fullscreen mode.
I'm using an ATI x1900 video card and have tried using both Tote and VLC, and I have also tried installing the fglrx.
But, both with and without flgrx installed, under the section 'Device' in xorg.conf it says that the driver is 'vesa'.
I don't know how to disable the default ATI driver to enable fglrx, or whether I am going off on completely the wrong tanget and should be looking at something else.
Or is there better support for my type of card in Ubuntu 10 as I don't want to go back to Ubuntu 8 which is the last supported version of the os that ATI developed a driver for my card.

Dec 24, 2010I was wondering if anyone noticed that VLC tends to slowly have audio go out of sync during long video files, like a movie. It's hard to notice at first, but eventually you start to notice the audio moves out of sync with the video.
A quick work around to this problem is that I can always quickly hit pause (the audio tends to play for as long as it is out of sync while the video is paused) then quickly hit play.
I know VLC comes with a feature that allows you to adjust the audio for syncing errors, but I find that a bit redundant as the audio will continuously move out of sync as the movie progresses, and thus would require constant maintenance.
I was just wondering if anyone else had this problem and if there were any solutions for it. This problem seems apparent on my iPod touch 4th gen as well and can be fixed with the same work around, however; the syncing issue does NOT exist on my windows vista PC (note: my ubuntu is on a laptop, not my PC)
Sorry for the walls of text: tl;dr? VLC has audio syncing oddities on my laptop running ubuntu but not on my PC running the dreaded vista. Can I fix it without getting massive migraines as my knowledge of linux is very limited?
Edit: If anyone has a recommendation for a better player that supports various media types, I'd be willing to try it. Open source / freeware.

Oct 26, 2010I've noticed a weird thing with flash:
1. When playing flash videos in firefox, they'll flicker with black screen flashing for a split second over the video(This continues throughout the video)
2. However, if I do either of the following, the flicker goes away (only while doing one of these actions):
a. Continually move the mouse over the video (i.e. move back and forth in a "mouseover")
b. Put the mouse over the scrubber circle (which shows time lapsed and allows dragging to change location in video) such that the "hand" cursor appears. Once the cursor changes back to a pointer, it flickers again. but as long as I move the mouse over the scrubber circle, it'll stop the flickering (even without moving the mouse anymore) until the circle passes beyond the cursor again.

Aug 13, 2010I have recently installed Lucid on an Acer Aspire 5570Z laptop. It has an Optiarc DVD RW AD-7530A DVD-RAM writer. I am having trouble in playing video/movies on DVD.
When I am inserting a movie DVD, the drive is working (i.e. is busy) continuously but the disc is not being recognized and mounted. Disc Utility is showing "No Media Detected".
The same DVD discs are playing OK in my desktop (running Hardy) and on another laptop (running Lucid).
However, that Audio and data CDs are playing/reading OK in the same drive. Even blank DVDs are being recognized and mounted OK.

Feb 3, 2010This is true for .flv, .avi, .mov, and .mp4, at least. This is true in both vlc and movie player. Thumbnails generated from frames in the videos appear correctly in nautilus. Videos play fine in firefox, on ....., but I downloaded one as an .flv and then it had the same problem. I have restricted extras freshly installed. My "Ubuntu 9.10 - the Karmic Koala" system is fully updated. I've found several other forum posts about the same kind of problem, but I couldn't find anything helpful in them (like that the contrast setting might be WAY out of whack, which it wasn't, or that nvidia drivers needed to be updated or reinstalled, which I don't have anyway, etc).

When playing videos (in Totem 2.24), they constantly flicker. I find that I can fix the problem by disabling Ubuntu's visual effects, after which videos play fine. However I'd rather not have to do that. Does anyone know of a fix for this?

Nov 11, 2010I;ve just bought a new machine, and installed Ubuntu 10.10.I've installed the latest nvidia drivers [URL] & vdpau, but can't seem to get rid of the flicker in video playback. There's a horizontal band across the screen thet jumps and flickers when the camera pans. I've tried using vlc, smplayer/gmplayer and xbmc, with various video outputs selected, but I'm getting similar results in all of them.

Jul 31, 2010I am having problems: videos have sound, but no picture.I'm using a Gigabyte motherboard with integrated ATI video, and I've read before that XBMC (and Ubuntu in general) don't like ATI too much. Is there any hope left to make XBMC work?I've tried the following:1. Fresh Ubuntu installation, default ATI drivers. Result: when starting a video, audio is okay, but no video. Also, visibly slow graphics even while navigating XBMC menus
2. Installed ATI/AMD proprietary FGLRX driver via System->Hardware drivers. Result: significantly accelerated menu navigation, but no video still. Note: having no problems watching videos via VLC or Totem Movie Player (after downloading proper codecs)3. Fresh Ubuntu installation, then downloaded and installed ATI's proprietary Linux drivers from ATI's site (ati-driver-installer-10-7-x86.x86_64.run). Result: yippee, I see some video, but wait: no color!! (all videos are in sepia-like mode)
4. Followed these instructions to install the unofficial ATI drivers. Jul 20, 2011I have an Acer Aspire One ZG5 with ubuntu and windows, i have an HD video camcorder, when i try to se a video recorded for this camera (that it's in HD 720p), the video looks laggy, i only can see some parts of the video, the audio is good but the video not much.
The camera comes with a CD and has a program that can be used in windows, with that program if i want to see a video of this camcorder i just open it whit that player and it looks good, but in Ubuntu i don't know any program that let me see my videos good without beeing laggy. Do you know any program that i could use?
I have tried VLC, Movie Player, Banshee, and have no luck.

May 2, 2010I recently canned Windows to transition completely over to Ubuntu. The main reasons why I haven't gone with Ubuntu completely are the poor video playback in fullscreen as well as gaming. Recently I started playing games much less frequently, so that became a non-issue, however the video playback is still very inconvenient.
The main problem I have is tearing. The two players I got to work are VLC and the Gnome Movie Player program. I tried getting mplayer to work but I was a little confused on that one. It works better on Movie Player but there are some formats it won't play the audio on even though I have the "ubuntu-restricted-extras" installed.
Anyone have some tips on better media players out there? Does mplayer do better?

Oct 2, 2010I am trying to burn a video DVD created from "Devede" with K3B. The video DVD successfully burns, and plays in my computer, but does not play in any of the DVD players in the house. I used to user "ConvertXToDVD" when I was on Windows, but am trying to find a free/open source alternative on ubuntu. I am using all default options. I have looked in the settings for both programs, and I fail to see the problem here. Even the ISO created from devede seems to match up to the Video DVD (that works in the players) I had burned with ConvertXToDVD.
In Devede I have it so that the menu is disabled and it automatically plays the first title. Apparently this is not good enough.. I thought this program was supposed to be easy to use? What am I doing wrong here? I am using the same DVD-R I have used before on my Windows machine to great success. I am getting frustrated as I have went through 2 DVDs,
